I don't get what you're saying, could you be more specific?
LOL, sry couldn't help myself. I hear ya buddy, when I started it was the same.
What exactly are you looking for, eryg2?

New players likely played other games before, so there's that.
Playstyle in other games usually translates into this game one way or another. People who enjoy DD classes will always enjoy DD classes, people who like support will always like support etc
What's the best build? Please answer briefly and correctly without asking for further details.
Thanks!
I don't see the real question here. It seems more like a statement/rant in the "body" of a question form. AKA the Rhetorical Question.
Most often it's brilliant questions like "which AT is the best?"
And yeah, instead of telling him the obvious truth based on our superior knowledge we go and ask pointless trivia like: "Best at doing what?" "What faction?" "What do you like doing?"
Stupid stuff like that.
i feel for you, eryq2.

When new people join this game and ask a general question about an AT or a build, and the replies are like this...... 1)"Be more specific", 2)"What are you looking for", 3)"We need more information about your play style"....
1) How specific to people expect a NEW player to be about an AT they know nothing about? 2) Do "experienced" players REALLY expect a NEW player to know if they need more recharge as opposed to more damage or accuracy or if they need more resist than def? 3) I doubt the NEW players even have a playstyle to say if they prefer to solo or team, mish or farm, rather play a tank or troller if they haven't played every AT available. I seen a post by someone with 12 posts and just joined this month ask for a list of powers he should choose or skip for a Fire/Dark Corruptor. Now as exp. players, we know about which powers may be better picked than others. Instead of seeing this is a new player and giving some GENERAL info, he gets replies like the ones above. I mean, really? That's all. Flame, reply, give your thoughts if ya wanna. |
1.Know nothing about? The ATs are named after what they do. blasters blast, stalkers stalk, controllers control, need i go on
2.When i was a new player I learned in certain situations excatly what my character needed for example whn i first tryed pvp I knew it would be a good idea to have KB protection on a squishy ae acobatics or even the IO. Even some is necessary for attacks like KO blow dont get threw. You learn this threw trial and error
3.They may be new to this game but mostly likely not gaming in general. I never played any other MMO till this but you know what I knew my favourite play style right away blasting. It was easy for me it still is my favourite AT ranged attackers are my preference andI knew this from the time I started.
General info sucks its useless and all based on taste.

So you're trying to tell me we should read minds? Or spend several paragraphs talking about what I like when that would be meaningless to someone who likes different stuff?
I'm always going to try to get information about what someone likes before I try to tell them what is best for them. If you don't like it, you know where the Report post button is. If the mods don't like it, fine. But until then, you post how you like, and I'll post how I like.

People ask all these questions so they can help you, as in, you specificly.
I imagine it's like tech-support, really. If you really want to help the person on the other end of the line, you need all the information you can get. More often than not, though, they will start with very general statements, and you need to ask your way through before you can actually start helping.
Take the ever-popular "What AT is best?" question, for example. We cannot possibly know what that person already knows and what they expect, what their preferences are, etc etc. Maybe they have very limited play-time or they want to be as self-sufficient as possible, so Scrappers are the way to go, or they want to play solely in teams, so Controllers will suit them best. Or maybe they just prefer red-side and all the previous suggestions are mood, anyway.
Yes, we could tell them that Scrappers hurt a lot in melee and can take a hit while Blasters do ranged damage but a soft breeze knocks them down but that's already the info you get when you're choosing ATs in the game. How general are we supposed to get? Where does keeping it simple stop and being needlessly vague start?
As far as the scenario of someone asking which powers to pick and which to skip, even that requires knowing what the player expects. Hell, even the loading screen hints say that some powers are better suited for team-play while others are suited for solo-play.
Now, I could either give him a run-down of all the powers and the various situations they are useful or useless in, but chances are, the player being new, they'll just be needlessly confused. I could give them suggestions for a solo build, but then it turns out they actually team more than they play solo and in the end, they'll feel they have an inadequate build. OR I could ask them those questions and know exactly what they need.
They're already a toon, so I'll take them on a walk around Atlas and kill some people. They figure out their powers pretty quick. And I try not to critique them, even when they've chosen a controller and have no clue what they do.
A good sewer team will show them what who does. Finding a good sewer team is the problem.
If it's "Where's the tailor?" from a level 6, I'll let them know, regardless, but I'll also tell them it doesn't matter until 20.
Most common question for me is, "How did you do that?" Never tell, in fact, do /e alakazamreact.

I can think of several folks who will describe a couple of alternatives in their answers and not just say, Give more specifics.
Local Man, for example, has often posted alternative playstyles in his answers, such as how one plays an Ice Controller at range versus how one does it in melee. He is extremely helpful and has a fine bedside manner. And there are others like him on the boards.
Problem is, the answers can get humongous, depending on the topic.
I infer that you may be objecting to a curt, dismissive tone to some of these responses. Some of that just may be the problems with writing as a mode of communication, ie, it comes off horribly though it was not intended that way. And to be fair, some of the OPs can come back with a "TL/DR" response and wonder why they got War and Peace instead of a concise answer, which can certainly Kindle The Flames.

I still have to ask questions upon occasion and I have gotten all sorts of replies, some of which were Less Than Charitable.

It is just another reminder that when the fresh-faced Newb earnestly inquires as to where to find the Lost in Kings Row, he is unaware that this exact same question has already been asked 37,841,314 times, so be merciful and kind!

Having said that, I personally gauge my reply to the level of experience/detail they express. If they don't give us the slightest clue about their experience, I'll ask. Frankly, if all a post says is "What AT should I play?" it becomes a rhetorical question.

Teaching people how to ask good questions is going to server them much better than guessing what they want, giving them the wrong answer, or giving them 10 solutions to choose from and cofusing them even more because their question was too vague.

Is there some new feature I missed that lets me know that name I see in a chat channel asking a question belongs to a new player? Cuz unless I'm standing close enough to the questioner to check its vet badges I have no idea how long its been playing the game.
Also I've been playing for 60+ months and theres a lot of stuff I still don't know about the game. If I'm clueless about a lot of stuff why would I assume that someone asking a question is a new player.

I will try to search it out in the forums and the Wiki, but sometimes it is too new or too obscure (see "LRN2SEARCH, NOOB") for me to find it. I appreciated "Wiki is your friend" with a link as opposed to just "Welcome to last week," when I asked if something had changed in-game. Even the vets can't find things some times; Mercy is always appreciated.

The folks that ask some clarifying questions are typically trying to help the folks asking very broad questions. A link to appropriate guides may be in order if the Newbie is too green to even know what they are looking for. I understand that. I started out with a Blaster and have taken a few to 50, but I enjoy Controllers even more as it turned out. The answer the Newbie is looking for may arrive via a process.
As long as no one gets Snarky, I presume good faith on both ends of the question process. The vast majority of the folks on the forums are helpful and kind, which makes this a great place.

Which qualifies you for "LRN2PLAY, NOOB" answers from some quarters.

I have not given you any negative rep in this thread, before OR after this. I am not sure how a post that lauds the generally helpful nature of forum posts indicates that I did not like your spelling, but it does not. Steady on, there, man.

He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
We could do another thing also. Have all new players asking questions be redirected to ParaginWiki and tell them to RTFM. But players ask a newbie question cause they dont know how to specifically ask for something else but i guess they expect for an answer which is to be properly given after you ask the newbie player those questions.
Take the ''Which is the strongest archetype?'' question for example. All are strong in their own special way. Range strong,,buff strong, mellee strong. etc. So you want to know about the player to recomment the best at for him or her.
Did you ever call a technical support service ? You either press a lot of numbers untill you get to talk to someone or you answer a lot of questions untill you get the answer you're looking for.

Then there are some people that bought accounts from other players and have early reg dates and decent number of post counts made by the previous owners.
