When is a character "done" for you?

This. But I could never bring myself to delete a toon (I just buy more slots should I need them), so I guess my reply is "When they hit 50".

Then they either become wanna-be farmers (if they are on another server than my main farmer) or trade drones (having 18 slots in the WW is good). Most often I also buy full sets for them (no purps) just to see how powerful they get with them (but I usually do this at 47, as soon as they can slot 50s)

That would be insanely cool... I hope I get to dust off all my 50s and that I get to enjoy them again

My characters are finished when they hit 50. That doesn't mean I stop playing them, but a character hitting 50 is a cue for me to start playing another character. I focus on one character at a time only, and play said character for weeks at a time, often past the point where I'm burned out on them, so hitting 50 is a good point to switch focus. I'll finish whatever story arc the character is working on, then go back to another one.

There is a bit of an exception. This weekend I got my seventh 50, a character I'd had stuck at level 46 for probably three years. With power customization and the new Martial Arts animations, I finally got around to bringing her out for a spin. I started her at 46 and a bit late-dat Wednesday, and I got her to 50 mid-day Sunday. That's four days, give or take. I wanted to finish Daedalus' arc even though I'm level 50, but even then, I'll still probably switch focus when I'm done with that. I have 30 characters to level to 50, after all.

Before Inventions came in, I was generally done with a character after it 50 - they'd just be hauled out when it'd be useful to be on a specific toon (for instance, my Empath used to get brought out for old Hami raids and PvP, although I'd pretty much stopped playing her otherwise).

Post-Inventions, there are few toons I'm done with. I don't really enjoy my Empath anymore, so she doesn't get played much at all - I just do the odd TF on her, but not much.

Some of my 50s are on hold because they're waiting for an IO build, as I have a list of toons to do builds for, and some are certainly lower priority than others. Even my Empath has one planned, as I've frequently found that rebuilding a toon with IOs gives them a new lease on life. I often spend more time on my 50s than my alts now, which was never the case before I had some good IO builds (and that doesn't have to mean purples). I certainly wouldn't think a toon is "done" after getting it a good IO build - the whole point of making one is to make it enjoyable to play! Plus, mine tend to evolve - I rebuild, then play the toon for a while, and see where I could make some adjustments.

I have two 50s on the "wrong" server (i.e. one I never play on anymore, don't really know many people on, don't have much inf on), so I guess I'm done with them, but I don't think I would be if they were on Union as I really like both of them.

Honestly I'm "done" with a character at 50. I then roll another one and try out a new combination. I'm not a min/maxer, so I don't care about OMG50%MOARDAMAGEZ!!!!!! For me it's all about playing with new powers and power combinations, that's what's fun for me, so as soon as we have no more new powers to gain, I'm pretty much done with the character.

That's one of the reasons why I only played The Philotic Knight for like 4 years straight before moving on. I got him to 50 and spent the entire time using up respecs like CRAZY, even PAYING for them when I ran out, just to play with EVERY combination. Then I got the smarts to retire him and play with entirely new sets and characters.

But, oddly enough, I'm not an altoholic, I'm the opposite. I'll mostly focus on one character until they are "done". I'm a Mainalomaniac.

50 is most assuredly "the end", I consider characters retired and doing their own thing independently of me at that point. However I don't push all characters to even 50, I have a few in the 40s who I have very little interest in taking further, they simply feel like they've accomplished what goals they had. Some may not get even that far.

I'm a single-player RPGer at heart, and even though the cap is 99 it's not necessary for them to get there, they just have to be far enough to finish THEIR story. The cap may lower to 50 and there may be other players along for the ride, but to me nothing has really changed. I do not desire an end-game for MMOs or 100% completion for SP games. I know this is not a common feeling at all, but it's how I see it.

This^^^. The mains will always be there, unless someone becomes a new main.

Out of curiosity, which tier 9s are you six-slotting? Because most of them don't need it. I used to do the same thing though.

That's an interesting way of putting it, actually. And I have to agree. Going up the levels, concept-wise, my characters are struggling, fighting against the odds and generally carving their own adventures. Post-50, they turn into the mentors and old-timers, the people who have either moved on to bigger things that don't give them much time to patrol the streets, or who have withdrawn from the fight altogether. They're also my Mary Sues, characters I purposely keep OUT of the action because of how overpowered I perceive them to be.

But it's good, though. That's exactly where they belong.

I think I'll be done when I can RP them as "dead."

I often re-use the same character as a different character... How can I word this in a way that makes sense?

As an example: I have a SS/WP brute who is a character I love. He's a thuggish and somewhat stupid crony who works for my main villain, a technology mastermind. He's RPed as always smoking a cigar, and when he's "done" it'll be due to lung cancer. My main will save him from the lung cancer with tech that weaponizes the cancerous byproducts, but can't restore the brute's strength. He rises again as a thugs/poison mastermind so I can start the journey all over with the same "character."

I have a goal for how a character will work when I start them- a concept of what sort of things they are capable of. Though this is concept based, it's also functional. As such, a character is done when they reach both the conceptual and functional capacity...this may mean when they are level 50 with full IOs, or it may be at level 30something and with auras and powers enough to look and act as I imagined them.

My 50 mind/psi dom is still in progress, even after four years of inventing and building, but my first character-my rad/rad defender-(whose first iteration began when the game was released) gets little play. He's 'complete' at level 33. Of course as characters get play, they can develop in new ways; I fill out their function and story even more, so new builds change when they are 'complete.'

And even that isn't necessarily the end- I recently picked up an ar/dev I retired after ED and have been enjoying his progress. The only reason he survived deletion is because I was so attached to his name & costume.
This is my answer, as well. I had a character stuck at level 15 for nearly 3 years. She's been 50 for two years now and sometimes she does nothing for a few months, then I play her at least once a week for another few months.

There's no "done" or "end content" in a game that doesn't end.

Their done when I delete their sorry excuse for a villain/hero. If I have them I play them even occasionally. When I disslike them they get deleted never to see paragon city again hence *done*.

So that means no 50 I have is done or will ever be done.

Ditto. Exactly. I enjoy the thrill of leveling up, not farming but playing, but once they hit 50 it's on to leveling someone else up...

My characters are "finished" developing once they reach 50, but they never retire. I play ALL my characters because I like them.

It's the same for me. As long as I enjoy playing them, regardless of level. I have a 50 on which I dinged two years ago. I still break her out for task forces and mission arc teams. I started working on her second build for more to do.

I have a level 13 blaster I grew bored with - she now exists to hold the name until I reroll.

For me it's not just about level, badges, or IOs, it's about the fun.

When a character has hit 50 and I'm satisfied with-
The name
All costumes
The character history
The RP personality
The badge count
The power selection
The power slotting (AKA being purpled out).
And the amount of content the character has gone through in the game.

Considering that the most of those points any of my characters qualify for is 3, (which has taken close to 2 years to accomplish) it'll be a long time before I'm ever done with any of my characters here.

The better question, for me, would be when is a character "shelved"? That happens a LOT more often. This happens for a lot of reasons, but mostly it occurs when some random new character sparks my interest and becomes the new "main" for a period of time. That might be until it hits 50, like when I started really playing my Kheld, or it may be only until a new issue comes out and adds powersets I want to try and a NEW temp-main gets created.

I make a lot of characters, some will get played until 50, some only a weekend, and others will survive deletion for long periods of time (inexplicably) and may never get above 23.

Given dual builds, most of my characters are never done - I can retool them as much as I want.

Once I hit 50 I move the toon in WWs and set up a cot. They chill there and earn the moneiz to support self modification and fund other toons. I occasionally take them out for a spin doing missions or TFs.

I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

What others have said applies to me for the most part.

Once the char. hits lvl 50, I'm "done" with them and move on to new characters with new(er) powersets. Even after 5+ years I haven't done all the powersets/combinations in this game.

I only have 2 non-lvl 50 characters and once they get to lvl 50...(one is a lvl 40 PB, and the other a Fire/Earth Assault Dom. that is lvl 39); well I will have to wait for GR or the next issue because I don't really feel like creating another character.

I still have some 50s/toons that have SOs in their builds...would like to get all my toons to have at least common IOs in 'em and also to work on their 2nd build (have one for a more 'solo' build and then one with a more 'team' build) which also means to common IO out those 2ndary builds.

I do pull out 50s when it's needed though (like if my SG/friends are trying to hit 50 and we are doing a 50s team, or if a certain AT/toon is needed for an SF/TF).

I also have 2 "badgers" (really only 1)...my Kin/Rad defender (my "main") for hero side and then my "main" toon for villains is my Ninja/DM MM; he's my "badger" on that side (not really chasing them though...just cause it's a pain...and got exhausted farming badges on my hero...granted it's not so bad now with the new reduced numbers but still).

My current toons are finished as soon as I get an idea for a new one, whether that be at level 50 or as low as level 10 as in the case of many defenders I left aside for scrappers.
