Official Anime Recommendation Thread
The best new anime I've found this season is B Geta H Kai, which just might be the best ecchi-comedy that includes no nudity to ever come out of Japan.
It reminds me of Futari Ecchi if retold in the style of Kodomo no Omocha.
Current Badge Hunter: Plot Device (Rad/Thermal/Dark) - 1,268 Xbox Live: Friggin Taser
King of Electricity, Lead Inmate running the Carl and Sons asylum, the "Man" behind the Establishment, Given Honor in Hat Form By Paragon City (Favorite Forum Poster 2006!), Master of Ceremonies of the Fair Use Law podcast
The biggest problem with Shadow Star Narutaru is that it seems to be amazingly difficult to find. I have three of the DVD volumes, but I never did find Volume 2. Dark Horse stopped publishing the manga series in the US well before the end.
And it is a depressing series. As you say, things get worse and then more worse and then still more worse, to the point that it's amazing the main character gets out of the anime series in one piece. (And I hear that the anime doesn't get as bad as the manga eventually does...) |
Edit: Finished the manga today. While better than the anime, the manga still features a jerky and inconsistent plot. Characters are introduced without much development and used more as plot devices. Things either make little sense or are explained in exposition. Poor plot development, some disturbing scenarios, and a depressing conclusion makes this one a definite pass in my book. A word of warning to anyone that decides to watch the series, it ends less than halfway through the story and give no closure.

Villains: Katsuo Tentei (50), Lumilian Dhosan, The Cobalt Tempest, Executioner Adan
This season so far, my favorite series is Kaichou wa Maid-sama, but ive also been thoroughly enjoying B Gata H Kei, HEROMAN, Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, WORKING!!, and Angel Beats!, plus the continuations of Durarara!! and Fullmetal.
i will however say that i cannot recommend Kiss X Sis. i watched 3 episodes of it, got turned off by how it was far too much ecchi, not enough comedy, and no real story to speak of, so i dropped it.

I'll have to check out Kaichou was Maid-sama. The premise didn't catch me, but maybe it's better than I gave it credit for.

It doesn't do anything hugely new, but what it does it does very well. Assuming you like shoujo romantic comedy (eg Ouran High School Host Club), anyway.

Found a nice anime!
Strike Witches - Catgirls, action, flying, witches, gratious panty shots (they don't wear pants). Loved it!
Anyone else have any anime with catgirls in it?
Watched Outlaw Star, Nuku Nuku, Mew Mew Power(Tokyo), Vision of Escaflowne, Shining Tears X Wind, Dominion Tank Police. Just curious what else is out there!
Strike Witches wasn't my cup of tea, but I've heard another season is in the works. Keep an eye out for Mayoi Neko Overrun for your next catgirl fix.
LOVING Legends of the Dark King - A Fist of the North Star Story right now, watching it on theanimenetwork.com
Central Park Media release at of great anime in mid 80's and early 90's, I loved watching them in early 90's on the Sci Fi channel. I would recemmend Venus Wars to everyone its one of my top five up there with Akira, suprised it not on here...
[Mecha]
Detonator Orgun
[Action and/or Drama]
Venus Wars
Demon City Skinjuku
Record of Lodoss Wars

Funny thing, I love catgirls but I haven't seen that many shows that have them. =/ (out of the above I've only seen Outlaw Star and one or 2 eps of Escaflowne a decade or so ago)
Soul Eater has a catgirl, or is she a girlcat? =^o_o^=
Only seen the first 26 episodes of the series, but +1 for Soul Eater.
Well...Bleach kinda has a catgirl. Yoruichi spends part of her time as a cat, but then transforms into a smexy ninja girl (without cat characteristics).
Slayers has a dragongirl (Phyllia? can't recall the name).
Tenchi Muyo: GXP has a catgirl that's a little more on the cat side.
Regular Tenchi Muyo has Ryo-ohki who can transform into a cat/rabbit/something-girl.
Trigun (+1)
Death Note (+1)
FLCL (+1)
Hellsing OVA (+1)
Dragonball Z (+1)
Naruto (+1)
Cowboy Bepop (+1)
Elfen Lied (+1)
Fullmetal Alchemist (-1)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (+1) (Liking this a lot better than the first FMA anime.)
Also add:
YuYu Hakusho

Just started Tears to Tiara on The Anime Network's website digging the Lodoss War feel of it so far. Finished The Skull Man, has a.. I guess Darkman meets Code Geas feeling to it..
I have been enjoying ergo proxy.
Just got done watching Kaze-No-Stigma on Hulu.... dug it (though hulu is missing episode 11 I think. Fun series though. Is there a season 2 incoming or did the series end at ep 24?
Anyway, a few more recommendations from me:
Hayate no Gotoku (Hayate the Combat Butler) - Not quite sure why I haven't recommended this yet, as it's one of my all time favourites. It's an utterly insane action comedy about a poor young man (the titular Hayate) who becomes a butler to a very very rich girl. Hillarity most definitely ensues. As do ridiculous amounts of shout outs and cameos and a complete lack of respect for the fourth wall. It even sort of has a catgirl (hehehe ). Oh, and it's narrated by Norio Wakamoto.
Saikano (She: The Ultimate Weapon) - You know the drill, boy meats girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl turns out to be a living weapon of mass destruction. And of course hillarity ensues. Well, no, actually it doesn't. If my earlier recommendations of Narutaru and Bokurano weren't emotionally painful enough, try this. It's not subtitled "The Last Love Song On This Little Planet" for no reason.
Now and Then, Here and There - Seems that I've been recommending loads of depressing stuff recently, so this'll be the last. And most certainly not the least. It starts with a pretty familiar scenario, a young boy meets a strange girl, they're attacked by machines and then sucked through a portal to another world (where the girl an machines come from). This is not your usual alternative world though. For a start, it was inspired by the various civil wars in Africa, in particular the Rwandan genocide. It's one of things you should certainly see, but will never want to do so again.
Legend of Black Heaven - After all that misery, lets have something that rocks. Something with this as a theme song. An alien race can only be saved by using a superweapon powered by ***-kickingly awesome rock music. And the only person who can play it is a washed up salaryman pining for his glory days playing guitar for an ***-kickingly awesome rock band. Hard rock will save outer space!

A lot of people seem to like Hinagiku, although I'm personally partial to Maria.

The manga is currently just going on and on and on, although we've gotten a good feel for the love dodecahedrons by now. The anime has a lot of pop culture references, so I wouldn't actually recommend it for a newbie to anime, but it's quite fun for someone who gets the injokes.

Same can be said with B Gata H Kai. I loved the characters and wanted resolutions for them but only got a farewell with a possibility for another 12 episode season that I hope exists.
I will say that Mayoi Overrun Neko, though, definitely delivered. I had no expectations before hand and the first few episodes just existed, but once it hit the hot springs episode and it became evident that their experiment with a different director every episode just meant every episode was its own wacky story, I enjoyed it a lot more. It reminds me of Girls Bravo with slightly less fan service and the ending definitely felt like a conclusion, something that was sorely lacking in the other animes in this post.
Now I'm checking out A Certain Magical Index/Raygun, having missed it in past seasons. So far I love those series and definitely recommend them.

Hmm...has anyone seen RAINBOW? Haven't really tried to look it up, but I'm digging the music and it's not necessarily a bad thing that it comes off as some sort of anime version of FOX's show Jail Break
