Which is More Important?
The player, without any shadow of a doubt whatsoever.

Because the game is pretty easy and balanced around SOs, 99% of the time I'd rather have a good player. This is because 99% of the time if people know what they're doing you can steamroll pretty much anything with any kind of team.
There are plenty of people out there with purpled out builds who can't play them for sh*t and just as many people with SOd or generic IOd builds who play their characters exceptionally well.
Only for some very specific instances (the 1%) would I prefer to have specific things in the team makeup. Stuff like doing an RSF with lvl 54s, an MoRSF, stuff that requires a little coordination. And for that kind of stuff I still don't think you strictly need a certain makeup, just certain things (like a few decent Corrs who know what they're doing). That's about as far as I'd take it.
Eh, guess I've gone off-topic a little. So yeah. For best team performance I think for 99% of the time, good players are more important than the team make-up.
As long as we don't have Black Widow Kitten on the team. That guy stone cold sucks.

The player, without question.
"I never said thank you." - Lt. Gordon
"And you'll never have to." - the Dark Knight
the player
As Silas said there are a few rare cases where powersets matter, but even in those cases you still need a good player.

"I do it better than anybody you've ever seen do it.
The screams from the haters, it's got a nice ring to it.
I guess every super hero needs his theme music .."
The answer to the question comes after a few play sessions while running with PuGs.
You can tell:
- When no amount of trying is going to succeed at the mission with the current team.
- You can tell when no amount of resistance stands a chance against this collection of heroes.
Also, use the notes/star feature consistently... and you will start to see a pattern as players you have run with before show up again and again. I get a lot more success with 3/4-starred folks with notes like "knows what they are doing, runs a solid tank, 6-month plays like a 60-month" than the 2/3 starred folks with less complimentary notes.
Me. With me and my wife on a team it definitely wont suck.
Good players working as a team can make the best of any situation.

Just kidding, obviously.
Player ability and comprehension is my vote.
Player.
Doesn't really matter much to me. When I'm making a team up, I'll pretty much take anyone who wants to come with whatever they want to bring. Somehow, some way, we'll make it work.
That being said, of course I prefer quality players. They're the ones who can make pretty much anything work in any situation. I'll take a good player on a so-so toon any day over a bad player on a killer toon.

Good players, in my mind, are people who can play just about any AT they choose to play well, have an understanding of what other ATs are capable of, and can work well with others on a team. This generally produces an open mind to new possibilities and leads to better problem solving abilities.
In the rare event that a team of good players runs into trouble due to less than ideal ATs, they are usually more likely to find a solution than a group of players who have the "ideal" AT mix that either lack skill or sufficient understanding of the game and other ATs on the team.
In short, I'd much rather be on the underdog team that succeeded than the 'perfect' team that failed.

I dont mind doing pugs on fun runs through radios, the basic TF (ones needed for TFC badge). That is a good way to open up out the Elete group status and find some potental new good players to team with.
speed Posi I have a set list of 6-8 ppl I would like on my team, but no more than 3-4 would be used at one time.
Speed ITF's everyone knows the key leaders and Normal itfs pugs work, but still like to have the team to know what options are out there to do.
Now like others have said having a good player on the team is always nice. They have options if something else is needed and can adapted and win in times of bugs (lvl 40 EPP in Manties come to mind)

Nothing saids its your spot like an ourob. Portal dropped on the ground.
My initial reaction would be the player. But when I think about it, it's a combination of both.
Do I want Stray kitten playing thermal or Silas? And is also depends on the context, are we PvPing? Or are we pveing? Is it a Master of LRSF? Or is it a lolITF?
My more often than not, I'll say the player rather than the toon.
Silas can't therm for ****.

Good players can overcome most team issues, I believe (except maybe for the 8 person-bubble team). I might die of boredom.

Player.
Anyone who says differently is a fool or doesn't understand the game.
A bad player can make the most uber build play weak. A good player can adjust their character and tactics to excell.

I already know how I feel on this, but after a conversation I had tonight, I would like to hear the opinions of various Championites.
When building a team, which do you believe is more important when it comes to team performance? Team make-up or the player behind the toons?
While both are at least relevant, I feel like the player is much more important than the toon. I could cite examples, but I want to hear opinions before I do that. Feel free to defend your position if you want, but overall I'm just wondering which is the general consensus.
(Too bad we're not allowed to start polls, does anyone know if I can contact someone like Mod08 to get one set up?)
