Which is More Important?
I think it is usually easier to gain a reputation than to prove it incorrect. It seems that through global channels, sgs, and even this forum it is easy for us (all) to form opinions on what everyone else is like, personally and sometimes as a player. And sometimes a bad attitude from a bad day translates unfairly into a generalization that follows the person for much longer than that day.
I know that I certainly have a hard time forgetting when someone gives me incorrect information to a question, or begs for a team to form and then quits the moment it gets tricky. But I also know that sometimes when I post my words don't clearly show my actual intent or feelings, and I'm sure that I look like an idiot on a regular basis when (arguably) it isn't really the case. (And to paraphrase Wes Janson- you can't look dignified when you're having fun.) |
5 gold stars, and 2 thumbs up. I agree completely and deal with this almost daily.
I was called out for being a sucky emp by a very vocal member of champion.. i recalled the tf that garnered me this title and it was a tf i didnt want to do, but did because i was asked and asked and asked and finally said ok f it. So ya, I didnt play as strongly as perhaps I should have.
Problem is, its follows me.. just recently, I was on a team with people and someone said.. oh, you dont suck as bad as bla bla led me to believe.
Nice.
Part of this issue i see is this...
Im still a noob, I just hit my 12 month vet. In this time, ive pretty much just played with my sg.. People that all joined COH within a short amount of time of each other.. We play together all-the-time so our playing style/habbits most likely arent the same as the vet players or the l33t players.. and its those players that just dont have a lot of patience for those of us that just dont play the way they think we should... and then get the label of being sucky... and it sticks.
It wasnt till I/we joined BMT (back in May) and started teaming with other people seeing that there is in fact some areas that need to be changed, in all of our playing styles.
It is fortunate that the majority of people we do play with now, are pretty cool and patient, and will offer up suggestions when they see things that would perhaps be better.. BUT there are also several of them that are still impatient, snobby, pretentious a*holes that roll their eyes when they see you on a team. .. and thats fine.. they pay their $ like i do..
Id rather spend my time with people that are fun, friendly, and outgoing VS people that are uber gamers and just care about DPS/buffs/debuffs. .. the best part is that they all pretty much rock. If you look hard enough you can find a good mix of both.
I do think darzer, DF, TA amd Cherry.
I seen pugs fall apart all of the time because things are just not meshing, might be someone running off on there own, personallity conflicts. what ever, I do try to give teams a 2-3 mission try before I jump if I feel it is just bad. Last weekend I jumped on a put, warned them I could only play for a few missions and when I was leaving, I was wishing I could stay longer. I really didnt know anyone on the team.
I also known that I caused some greaf from wanted to play at the extream lvl I can do (Pungu style, maxed everything and moving fast) Not everyone can handle it or wants to play that way. I can say I am jones'n for a power run.
but I do my best to have fun, and adjust to lvl ppl are playing (maybe push it up a bit if I think its a team thats just floating along).

Nothing saids its your spot like an ourob. Portal dropped on the ground.
I'd rather team with people I know than strangers.
Of course, I run ITF "pugs" most of the time but I try to have a Cold and a bunch of damage dealers on any ITF I run.
It's the player for sure.
If I get on a team with Oz and Crackback and a few others I know we'll breeze crap and I can afk half the time and the missions will finish themselves.
In some of my other SGs...there are people I know can do the job and others that will do the job...less well, let's just say. Those people usually get the last spot on anything I form.
You just need people that aren't idjuts and can follow simple instructions and can play their damned toons. Geez, I was on an ITF last night on another server and the Ninja/Dark MM with 48 months ingame never used debuffs, HT, or anything useful and quit after levelling...
Oh, and never team with Bronx, guy just afks at the Market half the time (and still manages to solo the SFs, true story).
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!

A good player, first and foremost!
I was on a PuG where a Lv50 Healer (who apparently had his difficulty setting at 5) led a group to foil a bank robbery. When Ghost Widow appeared, the Lv50's attitude was "WT ...?!" and he abandoned the team (after we'd been wiped out -- he didn't even try to heal us! )
Once the Lv50 was gone, the reigns of leadership fell to the Lv10 in the group. She had superior leadership skills and recruited more players to strengthen us by dint of numbers.
She was also a strong tactical thinker.
Player trumps AT (and level) every time!

And then, of course, there was infamous "Fire Controller hiding behind the fence" incident for the Katie Hannon TF!

When building a team, which do you believe is more important when it comes to team performance? Team make-up or the player behind the toons?

A team with good players can run a successful team with any combination of characters.
(I have teamed on Champion for a week or two, but I do tend to run a good bit on Champion.)
I mostly PuG.
The star rating system is great for keeping track of good players, so is using gfriend-ing. Turn the option on to show ratings and you can always see that player you gave 5 stars too. I really wish the DEVs would add the stars to the search system.

After having someone quit Citadel on the first mission by logging out and not actually quitting the TF, I agree completely with this idea. Something like that gets a 1-star. That being said, I have precious few 1-stars, which are done by behavior, never by actual player ability.
