/Facepalm moments

So I consider myself a pretty casual player maybe 5-10 hours a week. But I have about 10 level 50s and have been around since launch. I have been loving i16 and this weekend ran through both unai keman and maria jenkins arcs on my IO'd shield/ss tank on Freedom reaping a tonne of rare recipes and merits. So I thought I would end my weekend with a MoITF. I have done tonnes of ITFs before.

Headed to cimerora, was not long before I was starting on a MoITF attempt on -1 difficulty. Had some controllers and a stone brute on team plus a scrapper or two and a peacebringer. So we have a quick conversation about how to proceed, and then head into the first mish and start to basically clear all the mobs in turn and squishies stay back while we maintained the aggro and cleared the large groups.

I dived into the room at the start of the first mish on the left which ive probably done a hundred times before, aggro'd myself up to the cap and waited till they bunched up on me before firing off shield charge and footstomp.

Blinked.

Faceplanted.

MoITF Failed.

I had been running -1 arcs all day long with my toggles off to save endurance, no tough/weave or anything running. Followed by all sorts of lectures by the team about waiting for the stone brute to get aggro and furious apologising by me. DOH!

Had my /elec brute in RWZ, screwing around the other day. And then, a pylon shot me. I wasn't about to settle for that, so I charged the jerk and started beating on it. Since it was only doing lethal damage, I dropped few superfluous toggles to help my endurance a little.

After a while of this, I got bored and decided to go back to missions. I picked up a Rikti mission, ran in... and almost died to the first mob, having to use Overload to survive. I barely struggled through them, rested, and tackled the second. ... and almost died to them, needing Demonic. At this point, I was WTF'ing, because I'd been doing missions on this same difficulty for days, and only now were they hard.

Finally, I died. I came back to the mission and started fighting again, and found them to once more be a piece of cake. Only then did I realize what my problem was to begin with: I'd forgotten to turn my energy resist armor back on after I fought the pylon.

I can't remember a situation where I'd forgotten to turn my toggles on and died as a result.

But... I do remember situations where I dive into spawns headfirst and faceplant on a squishy after having spent time playing a tank or a scrapper. Scrapperlock takes too long to wear off

More than once I've hit self-destruct, either during a buff session or right on the Charge! before actually getting to the group.

Self Destruction and not actually hitting anything.
Forgetting toggles on the tanker
Forgetting Im NOT a Tanker on my squishies
Forgetting just how damn long Sands of Mu takes to fire off

We really do need a /e facepalm emote XD

This one too. It took me a few tries to learn to just put it waaaaaay far across my tray from the buff pet and Fortune.

Hmmm, accidental Self-destruct ... Once in a blue moon, but still fun.

No tankers, but charged my Brute in without toggles ... more times than I wanna count!

Trying to TANK .. with my Corrupter .... yeah, you can imagine that one.

OH and my personal fave screwup ... Charging in ... and forgetting my BODYGUARD MODE!

Mine has always been accidentally hitting the run key button and going directly into a mob as a squishy.

basically, if you see a miki on Triumph, it's probably cute and it's probably me.

Every so often this happens...

I am fighting usually teamed and sending tells to someone at some point I think I've clicked the chat window and start typing away only to realize I am running in and around many angry mobs.

It doesn't help that I play with all the game sounds off so there literally is no warning if I am at all distracted by something I won't know whats happening until I turn around again.

Thet thar's why thet self destruct ain't on mah tray no more. Ah jist het gittin' stupid an killin' meself.
[/hayseed]

In all seriousness I just don't see much point in SD anyway... the few times I've intentionally used it it either didn't hit anything or didn't do much damage to what it did hit.

Getting back to the topic at hand

Facepalm moments... uh, yeah... I guess I've had a few.
  • The forgotten toggle has come to visit me on occasion
  • Jumping from a scrapper to a defender and doing something silly
  • Moving from a level 50 controller to a level 20 controller and forgetting that THIS character can't solo that group
  • The famous firing a ranged attack on something that dies JUST before you hit the button and watching your blaster/defender/whatever turn and shoot a mob way over there...
  • The Regen scrapper death of "I can fire off this attack before I need Dull Pain"
  • The "I didn't see that <insert special problem mob> in the group I just jumped into"
  • Many others that aren't coming to mind at the moment... I've found lots of silly mistakes to make in 5 years of playing.

Best use of Self Destruct is to put it on auto. That way, not only do you get a hilarious surprise upon loading a character, but every hour or so you get an unignorable wakeup call that will usually come when you're in the middle of something.

Note that it doesn't work if you have no sense of humor.

This was sort of a facepalm moment; I'm sure it would be to some people who are far better at this game than I, but to me it was just plain funny.

This evening I ran one of the SoA missions where you fight Back Alley Brawler. During the first half of the fight he was missing me a lot because of my defense, but my toggles and attacks drained a good bit of my endurance because I don't have any serious end-reduction slotting in place yet. Eventually my end bottomed out, just in time for his purple triangles of doom to go up. This resulted in me trying to Placate him and run back across the room in order to lose his aggro and hit Rest. Unfortunately a Longbow ambush comes along and un-Hides me, so I'm forced to take them out while being chased by BABs.

What ensued was probably the most unintentionally hilarious thing that has happened to me in-game in a good while. My fairy-winged, tutu-wearing huge male Widow was chasing two Longbow Nullifiers around the room while being chased by the Back Alley Brawler, who is hurling boulders at me the whole time. And in my head, the Benny Hill chase music is playing throughout all of this. Fortunately for me, I eventually got some end back and managed to whittle BABs' HP down with Mental Blasts.

I'm sure this would not have happened to a lot of other players, especially on a SoA; I freely admit that I only barely don't suck at this game. But I was giggling hysterically for a good long while afterwards.

This was years ago, during one of the Halloween events. I was running around on my dedicated empath in Brickstown. I spotted was must have been AT LEAST a dozen Elochai GMs, spawned pretty much on top of each other. It was like a pissed off forest spawned right in the middle of the neighborhood.

So many of them... so many... so many...

I was so mesmerized, my logical, not stupid part of my brain was competely powerless to stop my hand... and I activated my one, unslotted attack. PEW!

The pack of Elochais answered with a CRAPSTORM of fire, and I hit the blacktop like a greased pig.

I've got one!

I was running in a team of 6 on a Positron TF last night with my newly rolled Kheldian (and actually my first character to set foot blueside since i4). We were pretty much steamrolling. I had taken to a tactic of teleport in, mire, shift to nova, and kill anything that my team hadn't hit yet.

I have to do this quick because otherwise the team spreads the aggro and I can't get a good mire. Too quickly, though, I take too much aggro and have to spend more time munching insps than fighting.

Well, there was one group of Vahzilok enemies that I jumped into too early. I've done this before, and I wasn't too worried, thinking the team would catch up in time. Port, mire, shift... faceplant? I didn't even make it through the nova form animation! What gives?

Oh... Mortificator Quantum Gunner.

/facepalm

Lol.

One of my SG mates, in response to a rhetorical question about "what this scrapperlock" thing was, stated: "it was something you had before you ever rolled a scrapper".

Its fun with squishies, too.

Boom. Kicked. Whut?!

"You weren't listening to the team chat and the leader orders for us to get the hell out of there."

In scrapperlock, the only thing that exists is what's in front of your nose, not what's on the screen.

haha, this. My brother did this in the first halloween event. Had an eochai spawned in steel canyon, sort of in front of icon, but down the steep drop on the other side of the water area by the first loooong street.

anyway, friend and I and my brother are runing around with some lvl 10 or so characters. Brother is playing a dark/dark defender. we are messing around, he was basically brand new to the game, messing with hover and whatnot. Anyway, we discover in a massive fight prior to this with like 20 heroes that his dark miasma powers are GIGANTIC when used on Eochai.

So we see this one standing in a parking lot, make a broadcast call. he proceeds to run down there, shoots Eochai with moonbeam, and drops a tar patch to see the huge graphics. Eochai is pissed. brother realises this, turns to sprint(no travel power) down the looong street. Eochai starts his slow motion run(tar patch) then throws this 5 foot wide flaming jack o lantern at my brother. Friend and I bust out laughing as we watch this flaming pumpkin chase my brother down the street to one shot him( no one shot code back then).

my brother told me after he had spun the camera around to see if Eochai was chasing him and watched the slow motion flaming pumkin get closer and closer until...awww...

Although it's late September, happy Halloween for your bro!

On my kin/arch defender, I usually tend to stay mid-range-ish. But occasionally the battle will get bottlenecked and, since it's important for me to see a target for my kin powers, I'll use my combat jumping to hop over the bottleneck and attack from the other side.

Sometimes, though, I'll end up jumping MUCH further than I intend.... like into the next mob.... because I still have super jump toggled...
