Adventures in Ridiculousness

So I'm writing a story arc, where a Crey patrol is wandering through the building. In the arc, the security systems are presumably down. And the profanity filter kicks in because, apparently, the following is naughty, naughty, naughty:

Patroller 1: It'd be nice if they'd get the damned security systems back online. I feel naked.
srsly?

/em headdeskslam

So, now I have to mangle the dialog into the far less effective "exposed." "Naked" is the best word choice, but the profanity filter apparently thinks that TEENS can't handle the word "naked," despite the fact that there are female toons running around with barely more than pasties on them. Mind you, those costume pieces were created by the devs.

Oh well. I'll suck it up. I guess I'm just venting. Sometimes, the AE--presumably a story telling device--goes out of its way to prevent you from telling stories. It's like AE insists that you tell a Disneyfied version of Saving Private Ryan.

You meant 'Saving Ryan's privates' there right?
Oh and that does pass the filter by the way

Please edit your thread title to add a NSFW warning if you're going to use this kind of language.

I was trying to make a mission in AE where a Coven of Evil Witches are scarficing Virgins to demons. Virgins is censored so i couldn't publish.

The in-game profanity filter has long been a shining example of good intentions poorly executed. It doesn't like "dick" either, which, well, you'd think fair enough, until the day when you were trying to have a conversation about secret identities and came out with the startling revelation that the original Robin was %$*! Grayson.

If you had been using the ingame group the Cabal as the group of witches, you would have also learned that the word "cabal" is banned.

I'm not joking.

"We don't want to spook them."

"Watch out for booby traps."

Yes, I've been having problems with that filter too lately...

Shrug.

It's not that they can do much about that. You stumble upon it, because you're using individual words in context where they are pretty harmless.

Strung together, all these words could be used to write a steamy BDSM novel.

The servers don't have the natural language parsing ability to tell the difference.

Also caught by the filter last time I tried it:

"Oh thank god you saved me!"

Yeah, I never quite understood why the word "god" is filtered.

Luckily, that's one of the easiest to work around. There are plenty of other phrases that express the same emotion (e.g., "thank goodness").

Or Slashdotters...or 4Channers, or something like that.

I hit that back when I was trying out Lord of the Rings Online. My party was venturing into the Great Barrow and I mentioned something about my Spook Stun (for use on, y'know, undead things) vs. my normal stun, and spook came up as censored for some inexplicable reason.

Only thing I could think of was CIA agents declared spook to be offensive as a reference to their jobs.

Bear in mind that the word 'Wet' was censored here for a short time. I can see how you could possibly work it around to be a word in a risque conversation, but when it prevented you from talking about the weather or even one of the powers in the game, I'm glad it was removed.

I'd love to know who approved that censorship in the first place though and what sort of politically correct world they were brought up in.

What bugs me about this is, as far as I know, Satan is not censored. So people can discuss the father of evil, but not the creator of all things.

We really need a new filter.

It's old-timey pejorative slang for a black person.

No, honestly. See also "coon".

Most of the filtered issues are easy enough to work around honestly. The problem with a lot of these problems is that the filtered word often conveys a stronger of sense the matter than most of the work-arounds. For instance, "Thank god," always sounds more grateful or emphatic than, "Thank goodness," to me (unless the person being saved is a virginal damsel in distress, or a southern belle I suppose).

Is "the Lord" censored? Or "Heaven"? Those are a bit closer to the intent than "goodness", but I don't know what the filter thinks of them.

You do realize that I was using goodness as an example since it was mentioned in the thread yes? I'm sure I've used it at some point before though too, but that's aside the point, since I've used 'heaven' before as well (and others ... not always because 'god' didn't work). "Thank the Lord," sounds odd to me though, "Praise the Lord," would work for certain character types (that I've not used). It's really an issue of voice when you get down to it.

I'm still somewhat confused as to why some words are filtered out, god especially. If nothing else, its annoying to have to talk around the word when you have an arc where the main villain is stealing artifacts in order to become a god and it cuts down a bit on the insane monomaniacal comments available.

I was just casting around for ideas. "Thank the Lord" does sound a bit off, though, now that you mention it, and you're right about the issue of character voice. I suppose there's always the option of just using the words you want and hoping players run your arc with their profanity filters turned off, but that's not anywhere near ideal.

I'd take the filter's ridiculousness one step further, and say the Coven is sacrificing Virginians.

This makes me want to make an arc where all the characters are using filtered language, but not saying anything bad.
