That gives me an idea. Write a perfectly normal arc, then go through and replace every word the filter blocks, as well as some carefully-selected, non-blocked words, with random words pulled from a dictionary.

"What the cabbage is $name doing here!"

"How in socks are you so powerful?!"

"Oh versimilitude! My evil plan is obfuscated!"

I like the last one the best. More villains need to use Verisimilitude and Obfuscate.

I had a hell of a time trying to figure out why one of my arcs would not publish, it was giving me that "copyrighted/offensive word" thing but of course not saying WHAT was triggering it.

Turned out that it was the name of a detail. See, one mission had a large number of battles in it and each one had different groups and dialog. So to save space I named them B1, B2, B3... and so on.

Turns out that "B5" is a forbidden combination of characters. /headdesk

I have some helpful advice to anyone who is in charge of creating these filters, or to anyone who may one day be tasked with creating these filters.

Please totally ignore the existence of Urban Dictionary. If you use Urban Dictionary as a reference for what words might be deemed offensive, then chances are, the majority of the English language (and probably several other languages as well) will end up being censored.

Wait ... did they really filter that because it looks kinda like BS? It's the only reason I can think of.

Luckily, that's one of the easiest to work around. There are plenty of other phrases that express the same emotion (e.g., "thank goodness").
That doesn't work too well if you're trying to make a story about CoT, Banished Pantheon etc though, and want to include their gods in the text somewhere.

How about deities?

I've only played a handful of online games where the filters were rather extreme. At least in City of Heroes you can disable it for chatting, it's a shame it doesn't also work for publishing story arcs. Okay granted they don't want people writing their own triple-X fanfictions or inciting a religious war by saying bad things about the Pope or a certain prophet, but sometimes its just absurd.

Mind you, anyone who has played Phantasy Star Online/Universe will know that their chat filters (unable to be turned off, I might add) are completely insane. While it filters out the most benign of words ("Doesn't it" becomes "Doesn'* @!#" because of the 'tit' part) it doesn't filter out a certain four letter F word if you end it with 'ing'. Strange but true folks.

Characters:
The Heroic Mary Grace (50)
The Mystical Thunderspark (50)
The Candy-loving Little Jenny (50)

Dang, I forgot that the filter stops arcs from being published. Shows how potentially-offensive my arcs are, right?

Yeah, something needs to be done about that.

Sounds like a case of the Scunthorpe Problem. (Warning: TV Tropes link, it'll devour your free time!)

No, honestly. See also "coon".

.... Are there any words in American English that are not pejorative slang for black people?

Given enough time, I'm certain the answer will be "No."

Einstein said it best. Only two things are infinite: the universe and stupidity, and he wasn't certain about the universe.

Yes. Yes there are. Many words are already taken, as pejorative slang for white people, hispanic people, asian people, gay people, jewish people, Italian people....you get the idea.

Misappropriating the English language is an equal-opportunity thing.

I heard long ago that it's because the list of censored words was copied from one used by a filter for another game that was capable of recognizing phrases, not just single words. Like "god damn". So various words that are just components of longer "offensive phrases" got censored.

"B5" was where the filter programmer's battleship was. Someone sank it. It was stricken from the game and forever filtered thereafter. For the filter programmer? He is VENGEANCE.

No, that would interfere with the whole affirmative action ideal. disable anyone from using slurs against anyone other than white men.
