Kill X mobs
I absolutly am starting to hate these quests. I mean I don't mind doing them its just FINDING the damn mobs. With other missions they will give you a waypoint you go in kill stuff do your mission, pretty simple.
However on these ones I just fly around aimlessly looking for the "Lost" but always find Hellions or Outcasts etc and never what im looking for. Finally I will find one or two mobs for some reason in an outcast area or something stupid. Am I doing something wrong? |
Not necessarily, but that might not mean you're doing it right, either. In the mission text, they will usually tell you where to go to have a good chance of finding the mobs it's telling you to go against. For instance, low-level Lost can be found in the northern part of King's Row, or in the northern part of Perez Park (just over the stone wall south of the Steel Canyon Entrance).
You'll learn, in time, where to find the enemies you're looking for, too.

You may always want to try to get a group together for these missions. I believe that more people in the area, the larger the spawn sizes will be.

Often, if the defeats aren't zone specific, you can grab a door mission containing the same enemy group from one of your contacts, or the police scanner, and do both at the same time.

There is also a download at Vidiotmaps that will actually place Faction names on your in-game map to make finding them easier. For instance, if you're looking for Lost in King's Row, it will show you on your map which neighborhoods to find them.
It will also show locations of badges and plaques.
Unfortunately, the writing is sorta small, so you have to zoom the map to read.

You get credit for a kill if it's the selected mission or not. All that matters is that you defeated that mob type. If I'm leading a team and I see someone has a kill X mob mission, I will try to get a team mission that has that mob in it

This "defeat x" was much less prominent with City of Villains, and also with newly added or revised content, Faultline, for example.
Ask for help in the help channel (/hc Where do I find Outcasts in Steel Canyon?)
Or ask team members or SG members for guidence. The expanded mission text often contains clues.

Speaking of kill X in Croatoa..I hate being in the wrong neighborhood for that stuff. Striga has some pretty bad spots as well.
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Nope, you're exploring the world and learning where the mobs hang out. Enjoy the NPC chatter, the zone events, and the occasional exploration badge.

Or alternatively, you get the first "Hunt Vazhilok", which does not specify an area. At the same time, you take a scanner mission against Vazhilok. The first 10 defeats in that scanner mission will get the mission complete for the hunt mission.
This can make the Hunt missions just a tiny bit more palatable.

Hell, you could theoretically do 3 (or for an 8 man team, 24) missions at once

I often save my 'lost cure' for talos radio missions which seem to have a lot of Lost in them.
Plus its fun on the cape mission when teammates see the rikti get cured

Unless I am in the mood for simple mindless hunting, I do the "Grab a door mission to knock out the Hunt Mission" technique quite often.
Most recent uses of this technique for me were the level 20 costume mission (had Virginia Hoffman's Tsoo Shenannigans arc open), and the level 40 costume mission. For that one, I did Serpent Drummer's first mission, and one of Maxwell Christopher's Band Nemesis missions. By the time I was ready for a break, I had the costume mission over and done with. Forgot though that the first mission in Hoffman's arc only has a single Tsoo (everything else was Trolls). Next couple missions completed the hunt though.
Some other things to keep in mind:
When hunting Nemesis, Nemi Automatons do not count (you encounter those in one of Max Christopher's first missions.)
When hunting Rikti, any mission where Rikti would spawn as Lost for lower level characters will not count (except the end boss and anything summoned by Comm Officers). So the Midnighter arc is not a suitable set of missions to complete defeat X Rikti hunt.

Just keep in mind, that if you ask where to find Lost in King's Row, you better be expecting at least one person to reply with the expected smartarse answer. |
Thanks, I'll be here all week.

I want to kill Harvey Maylor so much for making every fifth mission a Carnie hunt.
See, the thing I love about CoX is that there's no grindy missions where I have to collect 10 wolf livers, but only one in fifty wolves actually HAS a liver. But those hunt missions? Oh, they get so very close to these type of quests, and the Carnie hunts actually succeed at simulating the tedium perfectly by making them the single rarest villain group in CoH.
It's why I vastly prefer CoV. It did a much better of job doing away with the MMO school of thought that making even necessary tasks grindy and tedious to achieve. Farming for ultra-rare loot? That's cool with me, but when a normal mission by a normal contact is sending you to hunt down a rare group, and they explicitly tell you to clean up Peregrine Island, well, I'd rather quit CoH for the next three days just to recharge my mission-droppy-thing because I USED IT FOR THE VERY SAME KIND OF MISSION FIVE MINUTES AGO!
Yes, I am ranting, but this is the kind of archaic MMO design that made so many other MMOs unappealing to me. New and fancy content is always nice, but I'd really love it if 2010 becomes the year of revamp Issues for CoX. Then again, I heard lots of people really love CoH the way it is, and I like my CoV the way it is, so I guess keeping CoH the way it started will keep all sides happy. I dunno, I just know what I want to see done differently.
Nah, if they revamped CoH and removed half the hunt missions, there would be /e dancing in the streets.
Heck, just give the damn floozies a place where they reliably spawn.
