"Slotting Purples"

I am just coming back from a break, and working out some slotting ideas.

I see people talk about slotting purples. I assume purples are more rare or higher end io's, but I am having trouble figuring out how to tell what's purple when looking at builds.

Are there sets that are only purple? Are there sets that have a purple version of the same set just better? Are their sets that some of the uniques are purple and others regular?

Thanks.

Order of Rarity:

White: Common
Yellow: Uncommon
Orange: Rare
Purple: Ultra Rare

Purple IOs are "Superior" sets. They offer higher per-stat improvements than other sets. They also come with some VERY nice set bonuses. Additionally, unlike regular set bonuses, they never shut off. They're available all the way down to L1. Plus, bonus sets boast a superior Proc, compared to "lesser" sets.

They only drop from enemies L47 and above and can only be placed by L50 characters.

Thanks.

Bouncing around the wiki, I think I have a pretty good general understanding of the principles.

Figuring out which set to take seems pretty straightforward, but the whole enterprise seems a bit confusing to try to figure out how many to take from a set and to avoid bumping into various caps.

Mids' Hero & Villain Designer is an excellent application for designing builds.

You can find it here.

Do keep in mind that mids has not been updated in quite some time. It's still mostly accurate, but it is missing key things like the Dominator update. With further changes coming down the pike it will soon be even more out of date unless someone picks up the project.

Steiner has a alpha test version of an I15 planner in testing

Somewhat common wisdom is to 5-slot a power with purples, as the 5-slot bonus is usually 10% Recharge. And you get about the best enhancement value from 5 slots.

For any of the purple IOs that are single-aspect, you see a 53% IO in there (Hold, Damage, etc). You can usually forgo that one in favor of the set Proc. So you wind up with the primary aspect and recharge at 89.92% with Acc around 59% and EndRed around 33%.

Yep. Since Issue 13 or so, I've stopped counting on LotG: +Recharges and Purple IO sets in my builds.

Their prices are so ridiculously high that I find it impractical to buy. And if I get them through a drop, I'd rather sell them and use the money to buy several other sets that are not so uber, but they get the job done!

And I'll have leftover money to slot up my other characters! And feed my costume-editing addiction! :P

Also remember that each purple enhancement is a unique.

Additionally, the set bonuses from purples are subject to the rule of 5 just like any other set bonus. Granted, you are not very likely to ever have a build that takes advantage of 5 of the same bonus (let alone 6 or more), but it is theoretically possible, since there are more than 5 sets that give some of the same bonuses.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most of the purple sets are EXTREMELY expensive at Wentworths; unless you have a huge bankroll you can probably forget about them. For the cost of one purple recipe you could probably completely outfit your character with really good non-purple sets.

A "cheap" purple set will cost ~50,000,000 - 80,000,000 per recipe while the better sets can cost hundreds of millions per recipe. It's something to keep in mind when you're planning a build.

Actually, there are some purples that are very cheap proportionally.

One of the purple IOs I absolutely love is Ragnorak: Chance for Knockdown.

People keep telling me it's inefficient. But I dunno. I just love a bunch of Cimerorans get blasted down to their butts from a fire ball! :P

I have it on almost all my characters who have a Ranged AoE attack with no built-in knockdown functionality. It's fun! xD

True, but you have to admit that's the rare exception to the rule that purples are... um, shall we say, collector's items? Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous?

They're also not available in the AE at all, except if you choose ordinary drops for Dev's Choice missions.

Purples are pretty much exclusively used by the rich farmers and general crazy people. However, they can drop for anyone, and selling a purple drop can keep you in regular gear for weeks.

I personally have never gotten a Purple drop. I wish I knew the secret on how to get one.

There is no secret. Fight mobs 47+. Fight a lot. It's all random numbers, my friend.

It's pretty easy: kill enemies over lvl 47. Beyond that, it's all "luck" revolving around the RNG.

I've got that one in the Goat's Rain of Fire.

Super fun- the more the merrier!

Inoright?!

I used it in Fireball, Dark Obliteration, and Throw Spines! It looks so epic on Throw Spines! It's like an upgraded Claws' Shockwave!

Technically, there is another way to get Purples.

Play the market, make a ton of inf, start buying purples and selling them for more, make ten tons of inf, buy purples and keep them.

(I will note for "starting in the market" that most crafted IO's sell for at least a million more than the uncrafted IO's. Look at your build and see what you want; chances are other people want them too. Buy low, sell high. Become hated.)

Ya'll are greedy, stingy ppl lieing to the new peeps, send posi a fruit basket and then do an ancient voo doo luck ritual, while having a leprachaun dancing circles around you and the first lvl 49 succubus u kill will drop a purple.

Chances are that purple prices will begin to decline after I16 is released, what with being able to set spawn sizes to the equivalent of an 8-man team and all.
