Best way to deal with negative reputation?

I know this is kind of an odd question, but how do you (generic) deal with people who give negative rep without signing their name?

Just today, for example, I had a positive reputation from someone who signed their name (thank you), and a negative reputation for THE EXACT SAME THING, with no name.

It bothers me because I feel like it's an attack I can't defend against.

How should I deal with it? Ignore it entirely? Change what they didn't like so I don't get further negative rep? Do what they suggest in hopes they will come back and give me positive rep?

IMO, you should just ignore it. You can't please everybody.

i wouldent worry about it, not everyones gonna agree with everything a person says and some people will just give neg rep just because it gives em a power trip. I mean, I have -4 rep and Im not even sure where its from lol. I think you can disable it though. Im just too lazy to do so.

Ignore it.

Oh, and disable your reputation in your user options. I gather folks can still "rate" you, but nobody can see your reputation.

I think the point is to make an effort to do more good things than bad things. Try to see issues from all sides instead of just your own, and worry less about defending yourself and pleasing other people, and more about doing what you feel is right.

additionally, part of the point of the system is that people aren't obligated to sign their name. It's anonymous feedback that gives someone the freedom to let you know something, without making a snarky post and derailing a thread.

If you feel someone broke a rule of conduct, then send a message to a mod.

Out of sight, out of mind? Might be best for me.

Thanks. It's not an issue exactly, that is, I wasn't debating. It was about my "responsible reputation" line in my sig. One person said it was good advice, the other told me it would only bug people and to write a guide heh.

I'll try to give less of a rip about random folks on the internet

QFT.

I also recommend staying out of any rep farming forum games, since it destroys the whole purpose.

As far as I can tell, negative rep is about as important as a melted popsicle in July. It's kind of disappointing but, really, it doesn't matter anymore

Positive rep is just about the same.

Ignore it, revel in it, revile it, lament it, praise it, spread it around, fight it...

any or all of the above is a suitable response.

Just disable rep. i did that before i ever even posted on the boards here. i hate rep based systems.

ETA: i used to run a busy forum that defaulted to "rep on" and i quickly found that trolls LOVE rep as a way of getting attention. Negative attention being better than no attention. They would go out of their way to stir the pot just to get ppl to give them more negative rep.

I wasn't saying simply do as you please without concern for other people's feelings. Take the feedback into account and look at both sides of the coin. If someone told you something you said was annoying, then it was.

If that's what the comments were about, then I'd say I agree with the person who felt it was annoying. It's tone is borderline, and it really needs a broader explanation of your feelings than belongs in a sig. A short guide with a link in your sig would be less inflammatory. Even better would be to open a discussion in the City Life section and get a broader sample of people's feelings through the community instead of just promoting your way to do things.

Applying stilted and rigid interpretations of the rules invalidates the system just as much as playing a forum game to artificially inflate your rating. Let people do as they will, find an appropriate way to explain your feelings, and then do what you will in your own way.

I don't know how to write a guide though =/ I didn't have enough room to add all the pleases I wanted to. I'll just cut it back to the first line, that'll probably be enough without being inflammatory.

You might be surprised at what can set people off the hook sometimes. I could say "Cake>Pie" and I could get 100 people clicking the neg rep button. I think the point mainly is just ignore it (dosent mean go all out to insult people or anything). I like the idea of people being able to rate how helpful a post its but in all honesty a system like that normally dosent account for people just wanting to bring a persons rep down.

And even better would be to initiate a Royal Commission into the matter, empowered with the ability to subpoena witnesses to testify, and ensure a report, complete with recommendations to the forum moderators, is presented by the end of the calendar year.

FWIW, Sun, I generally treat the rep comments on here like I do comments on my YouTube channel. Well-thought-out negative responses, while I may not like or agree, tend to get more respect from me than "u suk". I figure, if they're too stupid to comment intelligently, they're not worth caring about.

But if it bothers you, then by all means, disable the rep feature for your account and minimize that part of your profile.

No, don't do that, I use reputation to judge people.

...

No, but seriously, if you didn't have any negative reputation, then I'm guessing that you're kind of a forum sycophant. Anyone who's says anything worth listening to will always have some people out there who disagree with them, and of course, there are always the trolls who don't listen to anyone and just like to make others miserable. The best you can hope for is to either keep your mouth shut (which I don't suggest) or accept that sometimes you'll rub people the wrong way and live with it (which I do suggest). One disagreer/troll does not a reputation make, that's why it's cumulative. Just keep doing what you're doing and hope for the best.

Everyone here has givin good advice. I don't see any sence in a rep system myself. It really makes no difference to me at all. I only see people as letters on my screen when it comes to the internet. Nothing should bother you that anyone would say or do on here cause frankly, they dont know you heh..
It is fun to rile people sometimes though like I have today to see how bad my rep can get lol.(*I have only done it since the rep system!*) I have really found out today that there are a lot of people that really dont read posts all the way through, and they love to twist words.

People take things way to seriously on here. People most of the time arent themselves on the net anyway, so the rep system is extremely flawed IMO.

Most of the comments I have been getting is just random letters like, asdfghjklk with a negitive rep attached to it. Funny stuff. Do Not let your feelings get hurt over this rep system. People are people and most are jerks. I believe that if the clicky for the rep was a knife people would stab ya in the back as long as noone knew they did it.

Just disable the thing, or have fun with it, or cater to everyone which is impossible. It means absolutly nothing.

I remember when the old forums had stars. There were mulitiple "Plz 5 star meh!" posts, as well as a few outraged "I lost a star" rants. If anyone posted that they felt a particular power or powerset was overpowered or unbalanced in terms of the rest of the powers of that AT, then they could expect to be a one starrer in very short order. It differed in that there was no way to shut off the star rates by the user.

Eventually the forum gods removed the stars altogether, for everyone. I have a feeling that if people get as obessed about their repuation as they did about the stars, the same thing might happen again.

Unpublish your arc then republish it and whammo - one star rating is now gone.

Wait, did I get that right?

ignore it, if this forum is anything like the animesuki forums I frequent (who have the exact same rep system) people who abuse it can get in trouble for doing so.

I got a neg rep because someone apparantly doesn't like the pic in my sig. I figure if that's the only thing they can think of to dislike about me, then I must be doing pretty darn good.

What? They disliked the biohazard symbol or our friends the floating eyeballs with teeth? Guess they've never been to the shadow shard or was around for the Issue 2 event.

I dislike sig pics myself. I just don't like having to scroll past them over and over again. But it seems to me that just disabling images is a more productive way to deal with this issue than neg rating people.
