Best way to deal with negative reputation?
I know this is kind of an odd question, but how do you (generic) deal with people who give negative rep without signing their name?
Just today, for example, I had a positive reputation from someone who signed their name (thank you), and a negative reputation for THE EXACT SAME THING, with no name. It bothers me because I feel like it's an attack I can't defend against. How should I deal with it? Ignore it entirely? Change what they didn't like so I don't get further negative rep? Do what they suggest in hopes they will come back and give me positive rep? |
Where is this reputation you speak of, are we talking forums or has something been added to the game?

On the forums, you can click on the scales image under a person's user name to give them positive or negative reputation, as well as a comment box.

On the other hand, if I neg rep someone because they are a troll, I fully expect that without anonymity, they'll do any or all of those things, because that is what they're on forums for in the first place. Without anonymity it would not be worth the hassle to neg rep a troll.
Personally, I don't care one way or the other if they remove the reputation system. Given that it can be turned off, I don't really see any reason to remove it. You may still get comments if you turn off the indicator, but you have to actively seek those comments to even read them.

That's why I'd only give out positive reputation, if I was going to give out reputation
(The reputation system is a bad idea, a sily waste of time and resources anyway..)
I dont give a crap what someone thinks of my post And I dont want to know!

Feel free to leave me negative ratings based on this post!

Hmmmmmmm, I've just recieved my second rep, this time, a negative one, the contents? Disparaging my grasp of the english language because of some missed capitals and a typo in this post. I re-read the post it was repped for, and it wasn't that bad, my spelling was mostly fine, my grammer may have been lacking greatly, but no worse than a lot of posts I've read on this board. And it read fine, the sentances made sence, and the people who replied to it seemed to understand me fine.
I just hope the pedant has gone through, even just that thread, and neg repped everyone that made a typo. As has been said... oh the things that set some people off to give negative reps!
Oh well, *stuff* happens!
Then it's time for them to get off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.

I'm still unclear on how the rep system works. I've seen like, someone, single-handedly, bumping my rep up by 15 points or something, and some of them bumped it up only by 1 point.
I'm assuming the more rep you have, the more rep points you give out with each rep'ing.
Is that correct?!
Negative rep doesn't bother me. So far, it's actually been pretty funny.
I got a head-scratcher today because someone dinged me with negative rep on this thread with the comment, "It was a common request!" I don't know how to read that comment as a negative thing; the stuff that the utility does is a common request, I wrote a solution to help people out, and... ??? Maybe someone just fat-fingered the negative instead of the positive radio button, oh well. If whoever left that sees this post and it was in fact supposed to be a negative comment, please leave me another or PM me to let me know, because I'm really not seeing it.
Let's see, my other negative rep comments so far have been:
- "n00b" and "tool" on this thread. I think that it's probably someone who just doesn't like me in general, was afraid that if they dinged me with negative rep on a specific thread I'd know who it is and would retaliate, so they just picked another one at random.
- "I have not seen one shred of 'proof' on your part of your claim, and my personal gaming experience as a casual player and non-farmer disproves it, therefore thumbs down to you" on this thread. Meh, farmer got angry. I got a bunch of positive rep on the exact same thread, so I really think as it turns out that a lot of people actually agree with me.
- "Like the wiki, but not the self-righteousness" on this thread. Meh again, whatever. I didn't think my post was particularly self-righteous, certainly not as much as it could (or perhaps should) have been. But I'm glad whoever left it likes the wiki!
I've gotten a lot of positive rep than negative, more than I expected to tell the truth. Certainly enough to make the negative rep I've gotten statistically meaningless. I figure if I keep doing what I do, working on little tools and widgets, trying to improve the wiki, answering questions as I can, then in the end, the chips will all fall where they should.
I can't believe Aggelakis got dinged, though. I don't care so much about negative rep, but as the founder of the Aggelakis fan club, that I take issue with.
By the way, it's "grammar" and "sentences," Angelius. Don't worry, though; I'm a pedant too, but I don't ding people with negative rep for it.

I don't worry about negative rep, and you shouldn't either. Why? Because the amount of negative rep someone can give you is a THIRD of the amount of positive rep someone can give you.
The whole system is skewed to slowly bring people up. Which means that to actually get a negative rep over time you have to either:
- Ask for it or
- Be a REAL jerkwad.
I personally have received an EQUAL NUMBER of positive and negative rep votes, and look at my score. Proof positive.

- A set default (probably 1)
- Their registration date (the longer you've been registered, the more points you dole out)
- Post count (the more posts you have, the more points you dole out)
- Your current reputation (the higher your rep, the more points you dole out)
Exactly which affects and how much each counts is set by the administrators, and we don't really have any way of finding out other than them volunteering the information or doing some gnarly trial-and-error testing (which I actually wouldn't suggest, as someone might think you're trying to grief the forums while testing).

By the way, here are the default vBulletin settings. Whether or not the admins have changed them, I don't know:
Reputation Description ---------- ------------------------------------------------- < -99999 User is off the scale -99999 User is infamous around these parts -50 User can only hope to improve -10 User has a little shameless behaviour in the past 0 User is an unknown quantity at this point 10 User is on a distinguished road 50 User will become famous soon enough 150 User has a spectacular aura about 250 User is a jewel in the rough 350 User is just really nice 450 User is a glorious beacon of light 550 User is a name known to all 650 User is a splendid one to behold 1000 User has much to be proud of 1500 User has a brilliant future 2000 User has a reputation beyond repute
1 + (years registered) + (posts / 1000) + (reputation / 100)
It's integer division, so all remainders are tossed. So I've been a member now for four whole years, my post count is 4577, and my reputation is 215. Each time I give someone positive reputation (and if they haven't changed the defaults), I'm actually giving them:
1 + (4) + (4577 / 1000) + (215 / 100) =
1 + 4 + 4 + 2 = 11 reputation

So then I give 21.... fascinating. I wonder how it DOES go for "negative" rep. As stated above from my experience thus far, I believe it to be a third of positive rep, but is that really the case or is it equal and the people rating me down just have no power compared to those rating me up?

Very confused as to why anyone would care about negative (or positive) rep. What effect does it have on you?
NO, Ultimus, you missed the point of Tony's schpiel. That's not YOUR rep level he's talking about, that's your rep POWER. What power you have to give points to OTHERS. I can make a million posts in these forums in one day, and I won't gain ONE rep point, period.
Rep points ONLY come from OTHERS.
Either remove the rep or allow the user to delete the comments on their page. I know I can hit that little - there and not have to look at it, but it IS always there. I don't want it there. Some people are REALLY stupid with the comments. I dont want that crap on my page!!! That in it's self is grieving IMO. The way some people get their jollies is mind boggling. I can see some sitting there all safe behind their moniter, typing something stupid or ignorant in the rep comment box with a big shyte eatting grin on their face while giggling.
As many as 1 American out of 35 may be mentally retarded. (That's 3% of our population!)
Every 5 minutes, a child is born with mental retardation (more than 100,000 per year).
Why does it seem most of them are on these forums?
Can ya tell the comments are getting on my frickin' nerves? I dont give a crap what someone thinks of my post And I dont want to know!
I dont mind the rep system. Get rid of the damned comments...
LOL this post was repped saying I was making light of mental retardation.. No I wasnt, I was just giving facts.. Now I will make light of the retards that confuse things on the forums here and cant understand my posts giving bad rep for being confused and having no understanding. :-P
