Talking about the incredibly boring sport of football (or any form of reality TV) is probably one sure way of keeping people out of the Lounge.

I got your gesture in brotherhood right here...

Premier League is boring. Too many millionaires who don't know what to do with their money. Mind you, it's the same problem in most premier divisions in the major football nations. Too many foreign 'stars', too little homegrown talent. It's not really 'my club' anymore when only two or three of the guys on the pitch are from the club's own talent pool and the others are bought mercenaries who'd play for any club. There are exceptions like Hungarian Pal Dardai who's played for Hertha BSC Berlin for some 13 years in a row now, but just look at the crap going down in Spain these days to see what I mean.

That's soccer.

I thought this thread would give me a chance to get knocked for being a Raiders fan for nearly 30 years... I suspect it will get me knocked, but not for team affiliations.

Actually I like Rugby Football (both union and league), Aussie Rules Football, Gaelic Football, American Football (Gridiron) - about the only type of football that I've never been a great fan of is the one that involves the feet contacting the ball the most.

I had to suppress a shudder this morning when I went into work and there was a sign in the Subway saying "Football is being played at Ibrox tonight...."

Is that the summer break over already? I mean, seriously, it feels like it's just stopped. Why the hell does football get to only have a couple of weeks off per year and I have to wait 26 weeks to find out what the hell happened to Adama or find out if Eliza Dushku has had any acting lessons during the 39 week break? (I like Dollhouse, but the show would work just as well if she was replaced with a lump of wood, or if really desperate, Michael Caine)

If I wanna see a bunch of local lads playin footie, I'll go watch Dorking AFC suck *** and then drown my sorrows in over-priced pub beer. But I watch the premier league because some (well, a lot, actually) of the best football in the world is played there. Yes the money is ridiculously high, but things like this price themselves, people are willing to pay the money and so it is paid. It's how competetive endeavours work if they're popular enough. It seems to remain mostly profitable even in this time of financial worry. Salary caps and 'the draft' is all well and good for things like american football because it's only really played in one country, so the rules affect every team, and the status of the league wouldn't be diminished by putting a limit on how high the money goes. But football is a world wide sport, and as such if you want to get the best players, you have to pay the going rate. This local team affiliation thing I don't really get, unless I actually know the players personally, I would no sooner become a fan of Wayne Rooney than Ji Sung Park simply because of anyone's geographical birth right. I watch football to watch football, not to feel like I'm part of an exclusive club. Football is pretty frikkin all inclusive if you ask me. I much prefer how things work now, with the top clubs raising the best teams in the world and competing at the very highest level.

Oh, and why should a player stay at one club for his career? They don't own his life, and making a world class player stay at a 5th rate club just cause those are the ones who chanced into scouting him first is a bit silly, the 'loyalty' that some people need to associate with sport as a criticism to the better teams is a bit perverse if you ask me.

Final rant: I'm tired of people going "In my day, players got paid £30 a week and played for the same club until they were 55." Yes, grandpa, and the standard of football in england was a lot lower. I much prefer the way things are now. Premier League #1 (and I'm mainly happy about this because it means I can watch the best football in the world on terrestrial tv cause I'm lucky enough to be in the same country as the greatest football league in the world. Perhaps with the tiniest smattering of FFMesque national pride, irrational as it is )

Oh and Mitchell and Webb ftw. I particularly approve of the 2nd one. "We whooped you silly last sunday" ummmm... :>

Kind of a shame that our national team stink to high heaven though, thanks to all the big league teams spending a fortune on foreign players and not investing enough in local talent.

BTW, I loath and despise footie, so don't be expecting ANY national pride on my front when it comes to that silly game.

I am from Canada.

My favorite sport is football (soccer to the heathens on North America). I actually don't watch or like hockey. I can't even skate.

My team: Liverpool!!

My dream trip is to plan a weekend trip to England to catch a LFC game! I think the tickets cost more than the flight over?

I dont od fantasy leagues. Too confusing. But I am a big lover of the beautiful game. Mind its been an odd few weeks for me. Anticipation and dread as the transfer market has been somewhat unkind to my local outfit. And given the place they finished lat year I can only hope some thing will pick up. Especially after the Premier League Trophy in China last week.

The Prenier league is the best and most entertaining in the world. So I dont agree its boring. Even our Championship League football (The league below it) has some decent teams and good quality football. But I agree with you about the money and player thing totally. But I choose not to get involved and let it spoil it for me.

I apperiate you dont like football but seriously you do know the difference between sport and reality TV? Ill give you a clue. None of the latter in anyway shpae or for, interestes me at all. Cant stand it.

And football has more than two weeks as any football fan will tell you while trying to cope with their withdrawl symptoms.

I quite like football, though I don't support one particular club or nation (especially not my own, they suck They even hired a Dutch coach in a desperate attempt to turn things around ...) I don't really follow the national leagues either, only the big international tournament like the Champions League or the World Cup.

Man you think I was trying to sell Mushy Peas or something.

Story time, why because I feel like Inflicting this one you!

I been following foot ball [Soccer] Since about 1998, I played it in PE in school of course but I didn't [and Largely Still don't know the rules]. So in a effort to bond with a Scotish Co-worker I desided to at least try and learn the game, well trying to find Scottish Coverage in North America for games is like Trying to find a good looking Camel. So I watch English, it has morning slots so it watchable. I knew though I hated David Beckium, that right I said it! At the Time He played for Manchester United. So I asked another buddy of mine who is a big Football fan Who Man U rivals hense I became a Liverpool fan [even though I hate the Beatles]. So since then I watched Liverpool and I tell you they do a lot better than My NA Sport teams! Oh for the Scottish League my favourite team is the Rangers, because My family on my father's side is from there. Can't by the Strips here though but you buy Those Catholic Sods Celtic all over the place.
