While I can accept that the overall technical standard of football has improved at the top level of the game over here, that doesn't mean it's made it "better" at all.

Premier League football bears as little relation to the traditions and roots of English football as Serie A or La Liga. The ignorance and contempt shown to the smaller clubs by the bigger has been spreading a rot through the root of the game since 1995. The Premier League was set up not to improve the quality of football or improve the chances of England winning a major trophy. It was set up by a handful of powerful men in Manchester, Liverpool and London to milk more money from the game by breaking free of the Football League, the organisation within whose remit it was included the responsibility to ensure fair treatment for all the clubs in the League, not just the ones who were currently enjoying the most lucrative TV beano to date. More recently the same few clubs have threatened to break away from the Premier League itself because they're still not happy that they get to keep as much money as they want.

When Manchester United play Real Madrid in a European tie, what possible interest is there in that for me? How could anyone with a shred of knowledge of the game's history and culture think that I would be likely to favour a foreign-owned multinational with headquarters in northwest England in a competition with a foreign-owned multinational with headquarters in central Spain to see which of them spent the most money, most cleverly? I used to love the exotic, rare treats that were offered by international tournaments, because they showed me new and exciting versions of the game. They were like the FA Cup on an immense scale, where England and Brazil were as different as chalk and cheese, and their matches tactically diverse and exciting and unpredictable. But I gave up watching many of the games in Euro 2008 because the names and style and the games were so utterly familiar - watching the Czech Republic playing Croatia was almost like watching Wigan playing Bolton. The names were practically the same. The style was practically the same. The flavour was practically the same. I'd seen it all before, and I wasn't impressed enough to devote time to the repeat.

At least when United were stuffed like the turkey it is by Barcelona, the new European champions are a club owned and run by their fans and supporters, and not some nutjob plutocrat from the far side of the earth with a Putin complex and the idea that he can make out of football what Howard Hughes tried to make out of Hollywood.

I love football, and always have. But I detest the Premier League. I'd rather watch Norwich City turn out against Hartlepool in the rain than sit on the sofa in front of two generic millionaire-clubs playing soulless football chess. I guess that either you're a fan, or you're a customer. I know which one I am.

Oh, and for those who are unsure about entering this fantasy league, I've been playing it for a couple of years now and it's a great system. Easy to understand, easy to use and comepletely free to play as well, very recommended!

Wait, I gotta point out the irony of this statement.....

So, after supporting Man United for 31 years, since I was 5-6 yrs old......that the moment my local team finally manages to get to the Premier League, because I DON'T suddenly start supporting them after never having follwed them AT ALL......that's what makes me a traitorous turncoat??

You're just sore because you support them and they suck

Tbh imop that's a bit of an odd view of football, all this random loyalty and 'spirit' I mean what the fudge is that? I wanna watch the best football I can, just because the motives of the executives may be scew it doesn't stop it being the best. You think Billy Drescal from an estate on essex who runs 12.9 100 metres sprint should get any attention just because he's been 'racing' with one athletics club his entire life? Or because you happened to be born within 30 miles of his birth place?

I watch football to watch the sport of football, when I was younger I picked a team to support in the Premier League based on their standard of football, not their geographical location or 'heritage', or because I 'hated' any of their rivals. Just because they may or not be ran by profiteering people doesn't mean their football is affected (cept for newcastle utd, lawl). This notion of 'dull football chess' I don't understand either. Just because said billy waves at the local fans every time he competes in a race, doesn't mean I'd prefer to watch him than Usain Bolt, even if I was part of said 'fanbase'. Top quality football = top quality watching, and if you don't want to pick a side to cheer on, don't. Local derbies are a bit dull imop. But whatever I guess I'll never convince you to change your mind and you'll never convince me to change mine.

Oh and Ryan Giggs has been at Man Utd for 18 years now, and that's just in the seniors. So even that plucky emotive stuff peeps seem to love so much and despise premier teams for supposed lack of, does exist in the premiership.

Nope. I know a guy from Rochdale who supports Liverpool and I say the same thing to him. Ought to support his local team.

On a serious note if you had told me 5 years ago Hull city would be in the premier league and Leeds would be two leagues below Id have laughed at you. Its all good and well saying they suck. But, for a team that less than 10 years ago was in the bottom of the lowest league in England and facing administration to just last year beating aresnal in their own ground for example its quite something of an acheivement. Yeah unfortunate they took the foot off the gas and stopped to allow themselves to get paniced but at least they did stay up. But I am a loyal supporter and should they go down this season Ill still renew my season pass same as I did before we ever though they would be in the top division.

Dude, you're just not getting the friendly banter between football fans, here, are you

I don't really think they suck, they wouldn't have been in the Premier League if they sucked, especially after the stonking start to the season they had last year.....but they ain't as good as my team ergo, they suck

*tuts* It was me that started the friendly banter by calling Man U scum. I know we havent chatted in a bit but you know me better than that. And as for the ragging of the Liverpool fan that is banter I give him too.

Anyway I was actually watching the last friendly today at the KC Stadium and after that performance I dont think they are ready for the season start. Espeically away to Chelsea. But hey I snagged a ticket for that so case of come what may there.

the addoration of "billions" is in no way a selling point. that many people liking one thing usually means it's utter garbage

you silly europeans and your love for soccer, i will never understand. you couldn't pay me to watch something that could last 3 hours and end up with a score of 1 to 0, utter garbage but in all fairness, that makes soccer rank right up there with baseball as a gauranteed nap inducer.

Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

screw your joke, i want "FREEM"

Just joined up too, looking forward to a good season

Cheers to the OP for setting it up, though I kinda wish you'd chosen a different league name!

I really wouldnt think Baseball comapres to football. Not at all. the pace is much quicker and alot more athleticism is involved. Not to mention there is much less brwak in play. As for scores being a reason to judge it I have been to a few games with little goals and even 0-0 draws and left very entertained. If there are high scores in a game the fact remains the defence was shocking and golakeeper to the curse.
