Have Firefox? Can't stay logged in? Let's troubleshoot.

Well, I'm not having any trouble so far this morning with staying logged in through Firefox. The first day the new boards were up, it wouldn't leave me logged in at all. It would thank me for logging in, but when that page went away and the boards loaded up again, I'd be logged out.

Today, everything's fine. I saw this thread and, perhaps stupidly, didn't see if I could stay logged in with Firefox before I started disabling some add-ons. I disabled most of my extensions and was able to stay logged in. I then reenabled each of them, one by one, to see if I could stay logged in. Even after re-enabling them all, I'm still able to stay logged in.

I have no idea if it's possible that doing that would help, or if my problem had somehow fixed itself, since I didn't try logging in through Firefox before I started doing stuff. (Normally I'd know better, but I hadn't had my first cup of coffee yet...)

Anyway, here's what I have, but like I said, everything appears to be okay for me now...

OS Version: Win XP, SP3
Firefox Version: 3.0.12
Installed Extensions:
Cooliris 1.11.1 (noticed this on a few others who were having problems)
MS .Net Framework Asst. 1.0

Yahoo Toolbar 1.6.5.200812101546

Installed Themes:

Currently zero problem staying logged in.

Microsoft Office Live
Microsoft Windows Media Player
Mozilla Default
Quicktime Plugin
Shockwave Flash

Flashblock

The reason I have most of my extensions currently disabled is that somewhere in the bunch at least one, and more likely several, were creating massive memory leaks since moving to 3.5 (causing FF to complain of a low memory state). In a couple weeks I will recheck them and see how many are still leaking.

Looks like I spoke too soon. It's logging me back out now in Firefox, after having stayed logged in for more than an hour this morning. Now it's acting just like it did the other day (i.e., can't stay logged in past the "Thank you for logging in" message).

EDIT: Disabled Cooliris (the extension I'd noticed that others with this problem have also) and it's currently keeping me logged in, at least long enough to attempt to edit this. I'll leave it disabled and see what happens throughout the day.

I was having this problem, and I don't use AVG. I managed to fix it, so far, by logging in, then immediately hitting the "Log Out" button, and logging *back* in again. I'm logged in through boards.cityofheroes.com also, if that's important to the cause

Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit SP2
Firevox version 3.0.12
Skype Extension for Firefox 3.3.0.3789
.NET Framework assistant 1.1
NoScript 1.9.7.7 (set to allow all CoH),
AdblockPlus 1.1
McAfee SiteAdvisor 1.8

EDIT: Okay, I've done some more checking and I've figured out why I kept getting logged out. My homepage was set default to bring up boards.cityofvillains.com where the new forums default, hero or villain, to boards.cityofheroes.com. I changed my homepage and it seems to be working fine now.

This may be completely unrelated, but hey, if it helps one person it's worth it.

Good luck, everyone

I had no problems earlier today then I went out and came just back... when I logged into the forums I get a "Welcome" message then when the forum view is loaded I am logged out. Works fine with MSIE which I am - of course - using now.

Since disabling Cooliris, I have been able to stay logged in as I have left the forum and come back.

So far so good for me as well.

regardless of what you have and have not removed, it should just work.
if this just keeps on doing this, then it's nothing more then a forum bug.
blaming it on the browser is only a sign of weakness, they are the ones who made the forum so they should make it compatible just like the old forum.

By "they" I hope you mean vBulletin and Jelsoft Enterprises, the people who actually provide these forums, and one of the largest and most widely-used services on the web for bulletin boards and the like. A service, by the way, that likely has a pretty standard cookie setup they use for any and every forum they provide.

It seems that maybe the folks who made the Cooliris plugin for Firefox need to have another look at their code, because if it's messing up cookie settings on this site, there's a good chance it's doing the same on others.

By the way, I disabled Cooliris, and everything seems fine now. I'm not ready to give the patient a clean bill of health just yet, but I'm comfortable releasing him from the hospital and having him call my office if the symptoms return. Thanks, everyone!

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

Yup: Changing start page/bookmark to http://boards.cityofheroes.com
...fixed it for me! Strangely enough yesterday the old european domain worked fine, so something changed today.

I think it may be safe to say Cooliris is the culprit. I just disabled it, logged out twice and logged back in cleanly, and haven't been unlogged while moving through random threads.

Although Cooliris seems to be the culprit, it does not affect my experience on other forums that use vBulletin, only this one.

More than likely, it's not just one culprit. No Cooliris here, and I'm still getting booted on this Mac at work.

On the Vista at home, clearing out all cache/cookies/etc, restarting, then playing for a couple of hours *cough* (4 or 5), when I checked back, I was still loggen into the forums.

Even using Onyx to dump everything didn't work. Going to have to look up CuppaManga's thread, there was a command dump, and I just can't remember it.

My apologies for being an assumptive a**hole with regards to Cooliris. Disabling it seems to have worked for me, but YMMV.

Maybe I'm just being evil here, but everyone still having problem after using http://boards.cityofheroes.com instead of any old URL? It was enough to fix my problems.

Meh I gave up, using Google Chrome for the boards. It seems to load it faster as a bonus btw.

I dont have Cooliris and couldnt even tell you what it is, yet I cant stay logged in either, only managing to do this as I hit reply and logged in that way.

Its a very clean install right now, as its a brand new PC, and Firefox will simply not stay logged in. On the home page if I login at the top right, it doesn't even stick to the redirected page.

I have to login for each reply.

My problem's been fixed since disabling Cooliris (although judging from some other posts here that's obviously not the only thing causing this), but yeah, using that url for the forums was how I was trying to do it, and I still couldn't stay logged in with Firefox.

Remember, those who can't stay logged in with Firefox are reporting no problems with other browsers like IE and Chrome, so it can't be a simple incorrect url issue.

tempted to do the same...

I was having the same problem staying logged in with Firefox, and disabling Cooliris seems to have fixed it.

EDIT: Spoke too soon. It got better, but the problem still crops up at times.

Haven't had any problems going around here myself, but my (JS/JQuery-heavy) work mail repeatedly crashes it. I reinstalled and stripped down to just Norton toolbar - still does it. Problem only started when I upgraded to 3.5.1.

Also, more seriously, a lot of popular virus killers' "resident" scanners, including Norton Intrusion Protection, are not YET compatible with 3.5.1. They rushed the release to block another vuln... ripping the back fence off to safeguard the front of the henhouse is not a bright idea, boys!

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

Is there a similar thread for IE? i can't seemed to stay logged in while i'm typing posts. I think the login timeout is only like 5 minutes. which with my scatterbrain is well short of time required to write a post...I used to be able to stay logged in indefinately. I've not had to use my password for such long stints that i would forget it...now i have to reenter every 15minutes at least.

That is EXTREMELY odd, as I've not seen anyone that is using IE having problems at all, only Firefox.

You ARE using the boards.cityofheroes.com link to log in aren't you?

I've stayed logged in using IE for over 24 hours on one computer, with the only real activity being to use it to check PM's, look at different index pages for updated posts, and adjusting or finding adjustments in the UserCP.
