Positron's Latest Mini Interview

... difficult tasks for level 50 characters to do that make them more powerful...
[/ QUOTE ] For me that was the most interesting part.
And if they introduce cel shading as anything else than an optional feature I'm gone.

If you are talking about the comic-book inspired genre, I can tell you that that we are working on something we think will keep City of Heroes on par or better than our competition.

What they getting rid of Positron are they.
Hmmmm, seems like he says very little in that interview beyond what is quoted already.
Something that isn't talked about is the new Pistol or Demon summoning powersets, I know these were talked about a lot when Going Rogue was annoynced and its a bit strange for an interview not to talk about them where there is a question about new travel powers. I wonder if these are actually part of Going Rogue or actually part of Issue 16? Thats pure speculation though.

One of the reasons some people arent trying CO is because of their cel shading graphics so i cross me fingers hope not!

Cel shading?
[/ QUOTE ]
Hope not, i like the way the cox characters adn enviroments look at the moment, fair enough id like animated faces, hair like many would but id not like to see any changes like cel shading. Unless it can be toggled on/off for those that may like that look.

I'm no expert but I guess cell shading is more than just a simple graphic option that you can turn on and off. I think it would require a completely new engine, so that's out of the picture, right?

I dont like cell shading at all but CO looks great, you can alter the settings significantly to just make it look like normal and very awesome GFX, just turning off the borders works wonders.
CO looks very nice and flows beautifully but I wouldnt recommend it for people with a gfx card lower than a 8800gt

reading tht short interview has made me more want to play GR.
i do also love how even if u dont get GR u can still play the rest of the game. tht its not a must have to continue playing the game. abit like heroes was when villains came out
Cel shading = rendering technique for making a 3D image look like colourized line-art: like an old animated movie, comic pane, rather than photo-realistic.
The name comes from animation, where the animators draw and paint on transparent celluloid (later cellulose acetate, as celluloid could decompose and was highly flammable) or "cel". In that way, the animators can concentrate on their respective element in the scene, and also look back in time and see how the animation flows. Then, the cels are arranged and stacked on the background to make one frame, and photographed onto film.

Ah thanks alot Shadow_Kitty & Imoba_Strife
I guess you DO learn something new everyday XD
I am also one of those people that hopes the graphics update will include something to make it more realistic and not more comic book. Granted its a comic based game, but i like to play games where i can get into the characters and environment not feel like i'm looking at a 2D comic (which is why i immediately disliked CO, even with the lines off it still looks less appealing)
I don't think it is cel shading anyway. He just says that they have ideas of how to be competitive within the genre.

Now that could be read as including cel shading, but IMO its more likely to mean something other than graphics... or specifically a graphics update.
If CoX brought in cel shading I would be delighted. I get the feeling that a lot of people get cel shading and oulining mixed up.
I'm not a fan of CO's outlining at all and thankfully that can be disabled. The cel shading in CO does look wonderful though and allied with CoX's more realistic style it would be a major improvement for CoX - and very possibly surpass the graphics that CO has.
All is fair in love and war - and also the MMO business.
CO has taken a few of the strengths of CoX and used them. It's only fair that CoX does the same in any upgrades they make to the game.
If the CoX devs decide to bring in variants of the CO power frames or design some of the excellent costume items that CO has, it would only be fair IMHO.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the devs upgrade this game .... as long as it's done with conviction and imagination.

I think if you are talking about raising the graphics bar in MMOs you should be looking at games like Aion. If you are talking about the comic-book inspired genre, I can tell you that that we are working on something we think will keep City of Heroes on par or better than our competition.

I think when you talk about graphics updates you should not just be talking about the resolution Issue.
Remember we had an update to high resolution graphics in Issue 7esting Manifest (if memory serves), Graphics is not just resolution, but a whole spectrum of factors including colour palette used, enviromental/architectual design and planning (everything is still to locked to a grid-based design), and the non-repetition of art assets. It all comes together to create a recreation of a realistic city where everthing doesn't look too considered and planned but has grown sporadically over time, you know, like a city does.
Compare the layout of Steel canyon and Millenium city and you'll see what I mean.
I would thoroughly recommend the design team look at taking the zones global on further expansions, It would take points away from CO and give new opportunities for designing new TFs and arcs.
# Scirrocco arc based in the Middle East (Pyramids, Desert Sandstorms, Tomb maps etc).
# Coralax Arc (Lost Kingdom of the Coralax; Underwater zone analogous to CO's Lemuria, accessable via an exploration rig out in the tropical Pacific or Atlantic somewhere).
# Flower Knight arc based in the Far East
#Any of the other Signature Heroes/Villains arcs in different cities, say... a grittier city more like Gotham than the Metropolis-like Paragon.
#Antarctic research station with (new) Ice Crystal caves the size of the cavern in the Eden TF, and big open snow vistas on the coast of antarctica with Icebergs and snowstorms and crevaces.
We've got a whole world to explore and thats before we even touch on going to Spacestation Gagarin and Moonbase Armstrong.
I must say running the graphics on the settings I do, the game looks pretty damn hawt! What could however, be a good upgrade as Mumsy suggests is not the graphics parse, but other processing factors.
Better reactive lighting to powers could be one such effect that ties in with Issue 16, in that the color of powers will effect their surroundings, more detail added to zones and perhaps more in the way of zones reacting to players in a similar manner to RV?

I'd also drop a nuke on what is supposed to be the design of Recluses Victory which is actually just a lazy rehash of Atlas park. Comon,... Recluse comes to power and all he changes is the flags, posters and one statue? - I don't think so.
I'd love to see an enviroment swinging red-side to a more similar post-Fallout Washington DC with subterranian tunnels for chase duelling, trenches and a 'capture the flag' system that makes more sense and is more like a front-line war scenario with pillboxes that can be utilised by players in a strategic battle.
PvP needs all the help it can get at the moment to make it more interesting.
Doorways utilizing the MA interior window seethrough style.
I get a little annoyed on opening a mission doorway only to see a black square prior to zoning.
It would be nice for a change if we saw through these doorways as we open the door.
It has been done for the auto zone map edges (Roads) and Ferries...
A snapshot of the other side of Hazard doorways would always be nice, along with interior/exterior views through the mission doors...
X opened the mission door to enter,
Y from the inside of the cave, oooh is it night out there?
After adjustment:
Y I see it's still daytime in Paragon...
It would probably be a fair bit of work, but it would add to the QoL imho.
New graphics? Hope so!
New content, zones, powersets, costume parts? Bring them on plox!
New game mechanics and gameplay features: PLEEEASE!!
This intrigues me. Maybe GR will make up the the abysmal dissapointments that were i15 and the forthcoming i16.

Thing is IMO, best thing that ever happened to CoH was getting rid of cryptic, I'm not saying that everything PS do is great (some of its pretty pants) or that everything Cryptic did was [censored] (though can't think of any stand out features that I love (other than the game)).
But I love this game, and while some imitation of another game is often to the good, copying a style (eg Cel Shading) is just copying a style, its not going to add anything but pretty looks to this game, which could be added with a Razor style make over (which I'm not keen on) and would prefer over something that is just a copy of a newer game.
This game should retain its own style. Its lasted five years, I don't imagine making the graphics look like those of another game will prolong its longevity.
Better add actual content for that.
Besides I have seen screen shots of CO and TBH I don't know what people see in it. To me it looks dated already.
No, you NEED new graphics to sell a game as computers nowadays are getting more powerful. Even the cheap ones can outperform the ones of 2 years ago by miles.
I want a graphical overhaul, and the advantages of it from a business point of view shouldn't be overlooked.
Yes i agree adding new content is always a good way to go, but it CANNOT hurt adding better graphics, whilst keeping the minimum requirements the same. There is absolutely no reason for you not to want a gfx revamp.
And you're just one person no offence, what you don't see in a game is pretty irrelevant. Graphics are the 1st thing people see in a game. When they watch the videos, see the screenshots, there is nothing more foremost to advertise a game with than graphics.
CoX is dated in that aspec. CO is different because the cell shaded comic book style is intentional.
Over here, linked from our front page, is a little chat with positron, that has one or two little bits of interesting new info:
