When i first came to Paragon City

In another one of my posts, i was discussing how a long time player royally kicked me up the backside at PvP, and was to be honest extremely rude and offensive to me, purley for the fact i was new to the game, and wasnt so good at the PvP.

Ever since the first days of when i joined this game i was astonished at how many long time players or high lvl toons just took it upon themselves to be rude and very unwelcoming to me as a new character just for asking the odd question, or making a mistake (like running into the wrong mob), or the odd broadcast too many. This is a social game is it not?

For example, the other day, broadcasting my SG in Atlas for new members, now firstly... i didnt break a single broadcasting rule, as i emailed the Devs first to ask about the rules. And yes its a farming location, but also the most popular location on the game and i got so many new happy members to my SG.

But.. id say 1 maybe 2 minutes into the game one of my friends who understood the fact i was promoting my SG told me that at least a good 10 people had petitioned against me in Atlas (again, i had broken no rules and was not overly broadcasting), next thing i know i have abuse coming at all angles, all from long time players having a go at me.

Im sitting at home thinking blimey, a few broadcasts and i get this... what a lovely bunch of people i am playing with on this game. A nice tell from someone to say please could you keep the broadcasts down would of been nice and polite, dont you think?

Of course there are plenty of lovely people playing the game that are great.

But come on people, those of you that im talking about, buck up your ideas, be friendly no wonder no new people play the game.

Rant over! Comments please!

Some people just seem to have issues with everything, and if you let it get you down you'll never enjoy life. It's just words and if you're not breaking the rules they can [censored] all they want but it won't change owt. Cheer up lad we're not all [censored]s.

Was'nt there, but so far I'm abit shocked. They told you to stop promoting for new members? sheesh.

And no.. its not a farming location, but those who farm/want Powerlevelling have taken over the location (grumbles). It is still new players zone!
Myself, i've had the riducule of several players and people telling me to shut it when I ask them to take farming and their requests to another zone. But even good arguments are sometimes wasted... meh.
(Hope I will not live in denial here.)

If you wrote the broadcast every minute or less, then I can understand them, but somehow I believe you did not.
Don't let the few of them discourage you.

Myself, I would rather have your broadcast there then the similar to this one "lvl [insert any low/medium lvl] [insertAT] want AE Farm Plox" or whatever the wording...

Those people who you met are probably exactly the same in real life. You're lucky to meet them in an online game rather than having them as your boss or something.

Regarding the PvP incident, I don't see it any different from any other game where I've played PvP. It's human nature, competition gets them all fired up and if they win they get to boast and if they lose they get to cry. It's a lose-lose scenario for those who just want to play for fun and not for winning.

Broadcasting in Atlas is a whole other matter. I do admit I find it a bit annoying when people advertise farms and SGs and whatnot in there. Some people just take it too far and petition it, but they're only doing harm to themselves. You ever played a game and had someone come up to you and tell you to "giv al ur stuf or my friend he admin he ban u"? This is pretty much the same, although smaller.

Usually the perspective of veterans and hardcore players is that any SGs that are advertised in Atlas broadcast aren't worth joining which might be the root of their aggressive attittude towards the one broadcasting. I wouldn't say behavior like that does warrant it, but as I said, I probably wouldn't join an SG based on an Atlas broadcast.

Whenever playing MMOs it's good to keep in mind that just the anonymous environment of MMOs promotes this kind of behavior. There's absolutely no worry about what will happen if you start mocking someone in an MMO as long as you keep it within the rules.

Hope that made any sense.

Just like in this frightening real world of ours, Age does not instantly equate to hospitality.

I read this, and your other post, and I worry on your behalf. One needs to weather this sort of thing from the undesirable ilk. I personally use the /hide function a lot, and have done for 2 years, as I find it quite hard to tolerate some people.

Some people were mean to you, so put those people on ignore and move on. I'm confident that this wont be an issue for you once you're more comfortable, with an established circle of global friends.

It doesn't say it on the box, but 'thick skin' can, for some people, be a necessary requirement to run this game.

I've never considered it a requirement, but it does make things a lot easier with some people. I have quite a thick skin and I always end up in a fight if someone tries to mock me in the internet. I bet I'm just as annoying as most other people are, only difference being I don't like to start the fights...

I'd just ignore the professional moaners and get on with playing your game. Personally, I've only ever raised one petition against another player and that was for a very serious problem. I wouldn't bother for spamming or annoying people, that's what the /ignore function is for.

Sadly though, my ignore list has exploded recently. I've probably come across more prize cretins in the last few months than in the four years before that. I don't know why but something has certainly happened to this game.

As far as pvp goes, that seems to attract some of the worse people which is one reason I don't bother with it. Not tarring everybody with the same brush of course...

There are a lot of jerks in this world. Unfortunately many of the ones that play CoH also PvP or hang around in Atlas Park.

Pay them no mind, there's plenty of us vets around that DON'T treat people like that.

Hey thanks for your replys, ill reply to each separately.

These people dont bother me, that is why i am still playing.

But for example, someone new buys the game logs into Atlas for the first time (got help them!) and stumbles across these kind of players like i did, they are much more unlikely to then go renew there subscription at the end of the month after that kind of welcome are they?!

Thats why i made my SG every day we hunt down these new players and teach then how to play and help them out. so they have a good gaming experience.

I bought this game.. I dunno 2-3 years ago but didn't really get into it (I don't think I gave it a chance tbh, every mission seemed the same, warehouse layout etc, so I got bored) But I came back last month from a couple of other MMO's. So basically I've been a noob in a fair few MMO's and know about the higher level INTERWEB WARRIORZ and how up their own [censored] they can be, but I agree, new players especially new to MMO players would likely be put off by these kind of people. Unfortunately short of them breaking any rules there's not much you can do about them other than finding the new players and helping them out and telling them to ignore the [censored] hats in the crowd.

Yup this makes perfect sense. But for a smallish SG, Atlas is the biggest place to get new members, and the odd broadcast every month or so to collect some new members never hurt anyone, am i right in saying thats the whole point in the broadcast channel?!?! (rhetorical question!!!!!)

If i wasnt broadcasting for new members occasionally just adding people via teaming together and sending tells would take a life time to catch up to those SGs that have been around from the beginning.

What these hardcore players must realise is its not a game they rule over. Its a game for everyone and a strong strong enfaces on the word GAME!!!

Ive just read all of your posts, and one thing keeps coming up, "ignore them".

But my whole point on this matter has nothing to do with me, i couldnt care less about those rude players. Its about the new members of the game, who sign in for the first time ask a few questions over broadcast or what have you and then are abused for the fact there new to the game and not sure what to do. They wont come back to the game after that! Unless there like me and just think "ill show you that i can be better you [censored]"

We need more new members to the game to liven it up, and to get that we need these players to be polite, bare with the newbies, and damn well help!!!

A lot of it would go if the devs would listen to us and remove the MA buildings from the starter zones. There's really no need at all to have an MA in every single zone...

Unfortunately, its not just thick skin, the place also seems to be over run by 'thick in the head' as well.

I'm afraid to say that you probably just found them all at once, I've met a few over the years and most, promptly made it to my Ignore list.

You said it was veterans, I just wanted to ask, how did you know they were veterans? High veteran badges? Did they claim to be? or were they just a high level, if it was the first one, they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. We all had to start somewhere, even them, and I refuse to believe that that was how they were treated when they got here.

The good guys are out there, keep going.

Be assured that while there are some elitism issue with a few vets, most of them are usualy grand.

Sadly Paragon City (and Rogue Isles) used to be a friendlier place (myself noticed that it's getting rougher out there).

I honestly would LOVE to know where every1 keeps meeting these horrible people

All i ever seem to meet are usually fun/random people just having a good time. Was just pvpin casually in RV for roughly 2 hours and well not one bad word was said throughout it all, some people even said sorry!

Sadly with every community there will always be people who think they are "the law" or above everybody else, take them head on i say and win

The game used to be alot more friendly. What you now have is a bunch of vets who are unhappy with the current situation and are looking to vent it - you just gave them an excuse.

I get annoyed by alot of atlas spam, which is why those people get put on ignore. End of story. I then go about my business.

What i have noticed however is that the newbies these days seem less inclined to actually listen to good, vet advice. *turns on grumpy old man voice* Back in my day, when you were new and obviously didnt know alot about your toon and vets offered you help with making it more powerful, you noted it, went away and looked into it since you didnt want to suck. I watched with equal amazement and a twisted sense of 'car crash' as the worst fire tank ive ever seen dished abuse to all who attempted to help them fix their toon which couldnt tank S/L damage mobs which any of my scrappers would tank for brunch. Yeah, brunch, not even breakfast :P

Anyway, dont worry about the Atlas thing, people are just grumpy. As long as you arent taking the P, dont worry about it. People are idiots in real life and on the net. They just get more brave on the net because you cant see them...

I have the same feeling when reading this. I (almost) never meet these people. I'm sure they exist, along with the iron man/spider-man/wolverine clones but I seem to miss them most of the time.

I agree though that the AE building should be removed from the starting zones though.

PvP is fun. You just have to know that getting your behind kicked is an option. And if they are offensive and rude winners....get some friends to the zone and take them down hard.
About the thick in head players, I have to agree with what most people write: /ignore is your friend.

i dont pvp and hate it with a vengence. me and KS are together on this one. it brings out the moron in otherwise intelligent people. i think it is best summed up by something overheard on eve "learn how to fight newbie" and how exactly can they when all that happens when they enter a free fire area is someone with much more experience kicks seven bells out of them.

I completely disagree that the AE should be removed from the starter zones. It's actually quite difficult tog et the AE building in higher level zones if you want to play completely player-created content to play your character or if you just want to start off with a few lowbie arcs to skip the dribble at the first ten levels. Getting the Mercy AE was a challenge that got me killed. I do understand your reasoning for wanting to do this, but it does hurt those low-level characters who actually want to use the AE for playing player-created STORIES instead of random exploits and farms.
