CoX on Linux - Does one dare to dream?
Don't know. I would try a search with those words on the net
Due to a sg member having lots of problems with windows and CoX it was suggested that he could try Linus. (dc'ing after 10 min in prime time is just not fun)...

Edit: Fixed link
I tried it myself about a month ago using Ubuntu and WINE. It seemed to run just fine, albeit at a slightly reduced framerate and a lack of fog, if I remember correctly.

I was able to run CoV on Xandros OS and Suse , with Transgaming/Cedega/Wine software, but thats been a while back now(atleast 1,5 year)
and i was able to play it quite good, except for some font issues, i guess by this time they fixed that.

No problems running CoX on Ubuntu with Cedega.
I've been doing that for över a year now.

Kubuntu and Cedega are fine.
Also had it running on Fedora 8 and 9.
Currently, you need to use the 6.05 engine of Cedega though. The latest version has a bug or two.

Wouldn't know. Tried it on a single char in Galaxy City before I had to get on with other things. I figure there'd still be a reduced draw distance there, though.

Running on Ubuntu 8.10, using Wine. nVidia 8600GT, no anti alaising and shadows, aand a slightly fuzzy mouse cursor, but it works and is pretty zippy. Heck, I can run it in Windows mode with Desktop cube going and rotating with no issues.
Doesn't recognise Water effects, DoF, Bloom and Desaturation sadly, but ah well. Thing is, it works. And it works well. You can use the shortcut on your desktop to edit in Compatbile Cursors (note, you'll need to change it to CityofHeroes.eu.exe, otherwise it won't run, and link in the -compatiblecursors after the last ") to clear up some of the fuzziness. It's not perfect, but it's more tangible in appearance.
It's not as pretty as on Windows, but it looks good, it runs well and crisp, and there's nothing to stop you from freeing yourself of the yolk of Bill Gates.
Note that this is running on WINE, no need to fork out money to Transgaming.
Just to add, I've been losing sound after a few hours continuous play using WINE, the only solution being to close CoX and rerun it (Just in CoX though, everything else in Linux that produces sound'll continue kicking it out). Dunno if Z's run into it yet, but I think it's listed as a known issue on WINE's site. >.>

So I dare to start this thread again:
Does anyone else think that the bug where the first letter disappears when writing something in the chat, when running CoX under Wine, is now resolved? Does anyone dare to check?

I've been playing CoH on Ubuntu Linux via Cedega for a few years now. It works great for me.
I have also tested Wine and CoH in the past and it worked but had the chat error and costume error.
I find Cedega support has improved since the Mac client came out (both made by Transgaming).
Whoa.
Necro.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Useful necro though. I'm downloading Ubuntu 9.10 at the moment and I'll post what my experience is running COH after a clean install with just Ubuntu, graphics drivers, and Wine.

A cedega subscription helps ensure that CoH remains playable under Linux. They are the guys with access to the source code, remember.

I have run CoH under both Cedega and Wine. Well I should say attempted to. Game ran fine, my graphics card on the laptop was not supported (stupid intel) so I had the same issues with graphics as when I tried to run CoH on the same machine under windows.
Yes it was Ubuntu, and this was back under Versions 7 and 8 of it plus Version 9. I know others that do also.
Realize that the fact it runs under OS X is a big tip off that it will, since we are talking about Unix derivitives in both cases. It is just not supported under Linux.

While I'm still waiting for Ubuntu 9.10 to finish downloading, I gave it a try on Ubuntu 9.04. These are the steps:
1) Open a Terminal and run sudo apt-get install wine. It will say a bunch of stuff, then ask for permission to download and install the packages. Type y to install Wine.
leandro@calmira:~$ sudo apt-get install wine
...
Need to get 30.0MB of archives.
After this operation, 73.9MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
2) Once it's done, type winecfg. Just click each tab once, since we're going with the default settings. It may complain about the audio in one of the tabs, but it will pick a default that seems to work fine.
3) Go to Places / Home Folder, then in the menu select View / Show Hidden Files and navigate to .wine / drive_c / Program Files*
4) Leaving that window open, navigate (in a new window) to your COH folder, usually in another hard disk. Copy the entire City of Heroes folder into the Program Files folder you still have open.**
5) Once that's done, go up one folder to drive_c. Copy CohUpdater.exe into the drive_c folder.***
6) Back to the terminal, change to the drive_c directory and run wine CohUpdater.exe
leandro@calmira:~$ cd ~/.wine/drive_c
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c$ wine CohUpdater.exe
7) CohUpdater will ask for a folder, just accept the default. It should run a quick check and leave you ready to play within seconds; if it tries to download the client, you didn't point it to the right folder you copied the game's files to. Once it's done, delete City of Heroes.lnk from your Desktop, you don't need that one. A proper shortcut should have been created with the COH icon.
8) You can run COH from the updater right now, but if you want to make sure everything works fine, run it with a few extra commands by changing to its directory.
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c$ cd "Program Files/City of Heroes"
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/City of Heroes$ wine cityofheroes.exe -project coh -console 1 -fullscreen 0 -compatiblecursors 1
(*) For those who feel more comfortable with the terminal, here's steps 3-6 made quick; supply your own path to COH instead of /media/disk/City of Heroes:
leandro@Calmira:~$ cd ".wine/drive_c/Program Files"
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files$ cp --recursive "/media/disk/City of Heroes" ./
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files$ cd ..
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c$ cp "/media/disk/City of Heroes/CohUpdater.exe" ./
leandro@calmira:~/.wine/drive_c$ wine CohUpdater.exe
(**) Any folder works, but this is what CohUpdater picks by default, so it makes things simple.
(***) If you run CohUpdater from the folder you're going to install to, it'll complain that it can't overwrite itself. So, we run it from another folder.

I'm slightly confuzzled. Which source code would that be? o.O

Transgaming uses their Cedega to make CoH run on the Mac, so, they know all the CoH programming hooks.
