While we got you here BaBs... any chance of there being a Tech Shield to match the other Tech Weapons (Sword, Mace, etc.)?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If at all possible, I'd like to get at least a couple more 'modern' or 'high-tech' shields in. I think there are a lot of players who hear 'Shield Defense' and don't get excited by the idea of playing a Medieval knight in a super-hero game...but you give them a riot shield or a nifty looking energy shield and suddenly there's a character concept that didn't occur to them. That's one of the things that got me really excited about the suggestion for elemental shields. Not only can they be paired with the elemental melee sets to show a character's complete mastery over elemental forces, but they can also serve as a replacement for things like Fiery Aura or Ice Armor. Maybe someone has an idea for a character who wields the power of Fire, but they don't really like how Fiery Aura plays. Shields, using the fire shield, can serve as direct conceptual alternative with very different game mechanics.

I'd also like to get a few more elaborate and ornate 'fantasy' shields in as well, to cater to those who actually are expecting the fantasy/medieval shield bearer. That could be new shield shapes, or it could be just more detailed textures to go on the existing shields (ala Romulus' pattern on the Round Shield).

I recently figured out how to get patterns and masks working on the shields themselves, so having the ability to do a 2 color pattern on the shield and then a 2 color emblem on top of that increased the amount of customization for shields by orders of magnitude. Most of the patterns that can be used on capes will work on the face of the shields, and I even went so far as to completely geek out and create new masks for basic Heraldry divisions and ordinaries (Fess, Pal Fess, Bend Sinster, etc)

Posi requested a 'hunk of scrap steel' for the Brutes and I still want to get an Energy and Electrical shield in the Elemental set. Right now I'm trying to finish up a Rularuu shield, just because I think so many people will be expecting it.

Jay's supposed to be finishing up with the new day-job related costume sets soon and pitching in on some shields. If that happens it'll be great, because he has a very different design sense than I do. He'll do some things that I would have never thought of...which makes for great variety for you guys. He did the 'Tech' and 'Fantasy' weapons, so if you're a fan of those Jay's your best bet of getting a shield to pair with it.

I've got dozens and dozens of things that I'd like to do (I really want to get police batons in as a War Mace option now), but a limited amount of time to actually do it. Plus at some point I'll probably be expected to stop making new toys and actually fix the bugs related to I13.

The Talsorian shield is one I didn't expect and it looks rather nice. There is at last a proper hat and southern necktie for my Archery Trick arrow defender Hogtied, Talking of archery,... I hope somewhere in I13/14 we have finally going to get the tint-able back option 'Quivers'-Its long overdue!.

The new spread of Tuxedos look very nice!, but the phrase "all dressed up and nowhere to go" springs to mind. We need an Opera house/Ballroom (on a neutral Co-Op Island/dimensional zone) with a red carpet outside, waiting fans and Paparazzi behind barriers with custom targeted phrases.
It would be a good place to hold annual events and competitions.

Hang on you playing the right game here you do know this is CoX and not some fruity clothes show MMO dont you? if not then i think hello island kitty is looking for players

Hello Island Kitty? - Pffft, whaddya take me for?, some kitten-obsessed superhero?... oh wait, hold on a minute

Theres also several thousand super heroes who dont have shields, did you forget them?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, unlike you forgetting the ridiculously famous one who does. The one so famous that even in a genre renowned for its resurrections still made actual headline news when he was killed.

Why don't you complain about Claws next, that's restricted to even fewer comic characters than shields, and was placed in entirely so people could pretend to be Wolverine. Oh and then Dark Melee, does that even exist outside Paragon City? And Spines. Actually, no point, it barely even exists in Paragon City as well.

Look your sounding like a stuck record here, we all know about capt america and that he has a shield but thats not hte point, the point is we do seem to be getting alot of "old hat" add ons picked from the human past even capt americas shield was made from some sci-fi metal so his does not even come close to whats being offerd to us here.

Whats wrong with picking ideas from now or even the human future that imo would fit better with a super heroe mmo.

There is nothign wrong with shields as a power but just keep in mind that not everyone will want to make a concept or "RP" toon or prance around in atlas in a fashion show like some others want some may want to play the game and have powers etc that look cool and do some damage

Posted

As I said, earlier, the CoH must be made from "some sci-fi metal" (or equivelent), since they will stop bullets, flamethrowers, explosions, energy beams etc. I don't know anything from "the human past" that can do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

The main characteristic of superhero comics is they are the broadest genre imaginable. Crime, spies, Science Fiction, both hard and soft, Fantasy, Horror. You don't have to look far to find comic book stories based on all of these, and many more to.

Ergo, anything is fair game for inclusion.

If you don't like Shields, remember they where included because they got the most votes in the poll that was held. That's democracy for you, you don't always get what you want.

Apparently you lot didn't, and it is the damn point. Shields as heroic devices has a pedigree so significant it's mind boggling they didn't put it in at the start of the game like certain other things just to harvest the fanboy subscriptions.

I wasn't aware the costume designs also came with an extensive metallurgical or material analysis telling you what they're all made out of! I'm sure the energy shield is made out of congealed hopes and dreams. Or maybe bubblegum.

Your opinion flies in the face of....comics. Which are so obsessed with history you're hard pressed to go near them without a member of some ancient pantheon smashing you in the face with an axe or a hammer, provided the rampaging amazons don't catch you first. If you're lucky you'll be saved by a guy inexplicably wielding a bow instead of a high powered rifle.

Theres nothing wrong with shields as a power, except all these things I say are wrong with them, and that everyone wanted them but I didn't. Otherwise they're fine. Apart from that stuff. Gotcha.

I have not said i dont like shields infact i picked them in the poll so id like to introduce you to "wrong end of the stick" as normal.

To sum up bite me

So to sum up:

You like shields
There already are some futuristic and modern shields in the game (beta).
There will be more added before i13 goes live and probably more in the future too.

So what exactly is the problem?

...and henceforth it will now be known as a Jar-Jar shield.

[/ QUOTE ]

You have to admit. Those Jar-Jar shields were very nice and well done in that movie. One of the redeming features in my book. I can nearly forgive Jar-jar himself for those shields and other smart uses of energy fields use his race was capable of. I liked them. I like the Taltrosian shield as well.

I give you The Shining Knight .

Edit
And they aren't Jar-Jar shields. They are Ulysses31 shields!

However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator

To swing the topic back on discusion ish, someone on the US forums posted that the army jacket now has camo (like the camo trousers and the npc jackets).
This, riot shields and police uniforms have really made my day.

It's not running away. It's advancing in reverse!

I really hope now that the shield fan-service has been completed the devs start work on more 'proper' superpower sets, or at least delve more into the SF side of things.

Well, staves are also quite high on the list of requested powers - and that would still give you Robin Hood and Darth Maul, so it should keep everyone happy

A bow stave for a long bow when unstrung would resemble a more common stave.
