Play the game find purples the ones you need keep, the ones you don't sell on to afford the others with the new merit system i am not sure if LotG +Rech, Numinas Recov/Regen etc will be that expensive as it won't be left to random chance.

Depends how lucky you are with drops. Iv had 50 million in a nights farming before, iv also had 5 million.
I too am looking forward to the merit system. My main, Flitz just needs one IO to complete his build and that's currently going for around 50 mill.
I am a pretty casual player and alt too much for my own good, so doing loads of TFs in the hope of getting it to drop is unfortunately not really an option. So I have been slowly saving up the inf by running missions. If I can get merits from arcs and use them for this one expensive IO, I would be very happy.

I'd recommend learning to play the market....that's where I tend to get my inf from, plus leaving stategic bids on something you want for a long time does sometimes pay off.

I've earned 2 Lucks of the Gambler +Recharge Speed, and a Celerity +Stealth in the last month with my Crab Spider just by running SFs; I sold them by lots of millions, being able to fully set him and now I have around 50 million infamy (I previously had 8-10 million). Do as Londoner suggested, run several TFs and if you're lucky with drops you could earn enough to fully set your toon.

The options in any game are:
1) "Stuff" cheap and common; everyone gets fully kitted out with uber kit without even having to try very hard.
2) "Stuff" rare and needs effort to get; player not to fussed about uber kit, and makes do with drops/cheaper stuff
3) "Stuff" rare and needs effort to get; player fussed about uber kit, and needs to do specific stuff (farming) for getting it
As the game itself doesn't fall into (1), what other options than (3) are there if you want uber kit?

Well that's not really true. I've never farmed for anything ever and have loads of IOs in my various toons.
I don't have the silly expensive ones (a Performance Shifter & Forced Feedback in my Fire/Rad are probably the dearest) I just play the game and frankenslot a lot.
Uber kit is overrated in any game really. Diablo 2 taught me that.
But I am really looking forward to merits in story arcs.

On the US they had a race about it months ago, who the first was to get 5 LotG's. They did casual (missions, story), TF's and map farming. How to obtain (drop/buy) was no issue, but no help from outside (no min/max TF, no 8party farm setup).
The farm guy won rather easy, dont fight it.. just accept and join them

Im not saying maxed out chars are needed but if that is what you want, farming, incredible luck with drops or a very long wait are the only choices.
Farming being the easiest, all be it the most boring too.

I totally agree. Even with general drops etc all my toons have had something rare enough to bag them a couple mill inf to pay for basic IOs and IO sets.
However, one toon, has had terrible luck with drops, only ever getting stuff that sells really cheap and I had to import some inf from another toon just to pay for his basic stuff.

Well, Like London I play a lot and so far I've not had a single LotG recharge and rarely any of the other "uniques".
I've been lucky enough to get the ones I wanted for Sing Star and since I play alts a lot I've had hardly any purples. I think I'm up to 5 or 6 so far.
I've done Recluse and other SFs basically every week, usually more than one SF a week and we seem to be getting a LOT of pacing of the shi..turtle. Enough said, looking forward to the merit system!
But until then going for inf, hoping for drops and not really bothering about as source for recipes is prolly the way. Maximize team size and up the diff to relentless.
On the downside: The merit system should make "normal" recipes very cheap, meaning people will spend inf on the purples, making them even more expensive. Get the loot while you can or hope I'm wrong!

Also things like Pool Cs aren't generated by day to day farming, only things like Katie Run farms (and even then the most coveted items are very unlikely to make it to the Auction House).

Well, a purple can cost 300M, I deffo get a LOT of loot, like regular IO's, salvage and even rare recipes on my way to those 300M to make the market happy I'm working, so I'm not too confident in your statement.
Unfortunately I can't stand farming (because I deffo need it at the moment after slotting too many alts, and Hey, I still miss one inf badge)
Luck of the draw as far as drops on TFs, even though on my last TF (a LGTF) - The blaster was joking that he bet he'd get a flippin Pacing of the Turtle receipe on completion... guess what he got? - we were in hysterics.
I'm sure theres some kind of hidden dynamic going on there deciding what you get 
, because he was a real suicidal handful that really kept getting in over his head and I worked really hard to keep him alive... for a reward I got a Numina/Recharge... which was nice.
I'd thoroughly recommend anyone who is after purple receipes to grab a Heavy and take a few turrets in RV, I've had many a purply drop that way - also, Tarantula Queen bosses and Bane Executioner bosses are also good for nice salvage, many a Hami Goo, Prophecy and Rikti Alloy have dropped that way.
Pacing of the sh.. tutter is deffo favoured. Everyone seems to be getting those a lot.
I'd say there's something seriously wrong and the merit system is prolly a way of fixing something they can't fix because they don't understand what's wrong!
Prefer Tempered Readiness myself for the Recharge bonus. Sadly my favourite Devastation is also FOTM.
Slightly surprised Decimation is cheaper, though...

I'm sure the drops thing must be random. But some times it does seem to be slightly off.
For example I hadn't had one drop in nearly 6 weeks on min 10hrs a week farming, but then I had 3 in one evening. The person I know who has the most pimped out builds farms ALOT prob 3 times as much as I do and it must be said he gets purples drop alot more oftern than I do.
One guy I speak to alot does two katies a day every day on a lvl 39 toon hoping to get a mircale. He's got plenty of nice stuff lotg's etc in the past few months, but not the one he wants.
Some one also said to me that you get better drops after misison completion. Could be true, could be a load of old toss. I tried it and got a couple of nice rares, tried it the other day and got jack.
It's all just luck of the gambler
I've not had a single purple drop of any kind since they were introduced.
In fact; I seem to be generally unlucky with all drops.
As said above, the prices only relfect what people are prepared to pay, if the sellers didn't know they could hold out for stupidly high prices, they'd have to lower the reserve in order to sell.
After regaining love for my tank I decided it would be good to kit her out with IOs. Being my first alt I felt I owed it to her to make her the first toon to be fully kitted out.
This is where the issue arose...
Although she currently has Crushing Impact and Scirrocos Dervish slotted in a few places an upgrade is in order. I turned my gave to the 3 Purple sets I want. And cried...
It will cost around 400mil inf to buy the three sets - Melee Damage, PBAoE Damage and Stun. I will be collecting my pension before I get that much inf. And no doubt soon there will be purple Heal and Defence Sets to purchase too. I strongly suspect it is for this reason farming was born!
