I'll turn the tables on you.

your team lost the sk for one member. So you have to break the team or get him a new mentor. How &%$£^&%$ selfish was your team to not try and find a mission compatible level or something you could all involve yourselves in? If it was a PuG then well, self-serving to the last man from the sound of it. If it was an SG team then shame on your SG for it's lack of support.

Drop the SK system? No wai! It's fantastic. Yes it can be used for power levelling (unless GG's on the team but hey ho) and it's within the rules.

Final point: This is the first ever thread I've read saying stop the SK system in some 2.5 years here. I'm all for the minority voice but damn you must be feeling cold about right now

[/ QUOTE ]

Scarlet, I'm not saying drop it at all. I'm saying improve it.

Answer me this: What would it remove from the current system? What would a syatem where the mission auto sks a player take away from the current SK system?

How would anyone lose out?

Apart from street farming. And maybe the game can keep the sk system for that.

I'm not sure if I'm writing in English and the computers translating to googldegook cause you are one of the brighter posters here and even you didnt understand what I was suggesting.

[/ QUOTE ]

I guess bottom line, the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" holds very true in this instance. The SK system works fine as it is. I can't see any requirement to auto-SK. I don't think you've made a case for changing or dropping it, because, bottom line, it works and works well (and I also believe it's highly regarded by many players.)

Your proposal is fundamentally flawed I think and yes, maybe I'm not getting your point but that's what you seem to be saying and my response is "No"

...Or allow a Level fifty to sidekick two team-members?, I know Sidekicking in Champions-Online is going to allow you to sidekick four. Maybe an option to relieve the 'Lv50 leaving and dropping a sidekick scenario' on the current setup.

I'll be interested to hear what you come up with in regards to possible solutions to the concerns put forward. If they seem like they'd work then, hey, maybe your idea's worth a go.

[/ QUOTE ]

I havent got the time or the resources to think the solutions to the downsides properly. I'm not sitting round a table with a group of people that can fire off fcts and figures or give me feasability projections.
Besides, I put a suggestion forward, asked an opinion and got it, so for me it's asked and answered.

However just to quickly give you one off the cuff reply.. what is wrong with capping the xp so that there is only so much a lowly can earn, regardless of the level of the mission.

I do see issues to be honest. The biggest is out leveling your own content, but in a way that's a non issue because debt is so minimal and levelling is so fast, we do that all the time anyway. And, if there were no big gains to be had by going into an auto mentored mission, I dont think things wwould be thrown to far out of scew anyway.

But look, I put a thought forward and its been stamped on. That's fine.

Although it's good to see that from that idea other suggestions are coming through.

Isnt that what all this is for?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, you do, but you don't actually do it that fast once you get into the 30s. That used to be the area where there was least content, which was a problem, but it's thickened out a lot.

The issue you are ignoring is that people will simply not see any content, they will be too busy maxising their xp by doing the highest level missions they can, either with level 50 friends, or with farmers happy to have easy space filling.

And, as anecdotal evidence from AoC would suggest, you have the added issue of low levels hanging about in PI begging to be power-levelled.

I think the Sidekick/Lackey system is one of the best things about CoX. I wouldn't change it for the world.

Well, maybe for the WORLD.

I see the rational behind the suggestion, but it is flawed. In addition to being one of the more elegant mechanics in the game it can also promote a sense of bonding in teams. The engineer in me also says that the system more or less works - I don't see the benefit in terms of development compared to spending time on creating new features and content.

One point of yours I am unclear on - if sking can lead to PLing, is it valid to assume auto-sking-by-mission would not?

On an off topic but unrelated note - do you drink much caffeine? Your posts seem to me to have a sinusoidal aggression curve sometimes.

Having two sorts of sidekicks?

One is by player - the sidekick/lackey will con one level below their mentor/boss, exp/inf is as normal.

The other is by the mission - sidekicks/lackeys who choose this option will con one level below the mission owner. However, their exp/inf is cut in half (or some other largish percentage) due to having no mentor/boss to teach them the ropes (storywise reason).

So, it pays to get a normal sidekick/mentor relationship, but if the option doesn't exist, you can still join... you just won't get as much inf/exp as everyone else. :3

How's that?

See, THIS is why I don't post as much as I would like!

Lionsbane, I think that there were a few reasons that this post was dismissed almost immediately.

Firstly, there have been a few "CoX is the greatest thing since bread before it was even sliced!" threads recently. And almost every one of them (if not every one - I can't be bothered to trawl through them to double check!) mentions the SK/Exemplar system as one of the best bits.

Secondly, the title of a post is very important. If you made a post called "Storylines - lose 'em" or "Costume Creator - lose it" then I think you'd get a similar response.

The third point that concerned me was after I opened the post. To me this is a suggestion, and may have been better placed in the Suggestions forum. I know that I have a different mindset when I go into the Suggestions forum than when I'm in General Discussion.

I'm a big fan of the "Take a deep breath before saying something" train of thought, and I always re-read what I'm saying before posting it (show preview is my way of checking formatting AND content!) The issue that I have with the way this discussion went was that you seemed to jump on people almost immediately, as if you were spoiling for a fight when you posted this.

When I read a post I always think "is there another (i.e. innocent) way that this could be read?"

But anyway, to answer your suggestion:

I think that the SK system "as is" is a great idea. I'm not keen on the idea of lots of SK's to one Mentor - it doesn't seem to fit the idea that I have of superheroes (oh, and on that note - am I the only person who thinks of Steed and Emma Peel when I hear The Avengers" )

The possibility of abuse is just too open for me, and I think it would mean waaay too much dev time to work out the kinks, when they could be working on new content and fixes to broken stuff. You've been a huge proponent of the "CoX needs to work hard over the next few months" ideal so I'm sure you'll understand where I'm coming from.

And my final thought was using the example you gave - I spend most of my time in PuGs (as I'm a casual player) - and so if I was caught in that situation it would be an incentive to try to find a replacement Mentor - thus allowing me to meet yet another new (and fantastic!) person.

I hope this is read in the spirit that it was written.

Speaking of PL's, I was on a Hollows Team doing Frostfire last night, when someone on his trial asked a Warshade if their level 50 could PL them when they got the game. ._. I did my civic duty and mentioned that the journey is the important part, not getting to the top quickly, I hope they took the advice.

In answer to your question the system works just fine as it is.

I think 2 sidekicks per mentor would be a step forward to resolving the problem that was encountered and shouldn't open up too much opurtunity to be exploited. No I'm just re-iterating what others have said but hell it's my 0.02 inf to burn if I like.
On the subject though I wonder for the need for such extremem range restrictions on the link, Last time I SK'ewd anyone I face planted, TP'ed to base only to be met with 'My SK left me I faceplanted' in my chat window, a quick apology and an explanation that I'd totally forgot my responsablility there for a sec resolved the problem but it was rather embarrasing.

If you want to talk sidekicks, look at Batman over the years. You may not call them sidekicks, but he did have complete control over (even if not direct):

Robin
Batgirl
Huntress
Nightwing
Azrael
Oracle
Spoiler
Orpheus
and most of the godammed Justice League...

It all depends on context.

On topic, I actually like Lionsbane's idea.

It would be great to take a number of people and go into a mission without worry about sk's.

In fact, if you want to prevent PLing, perhaps you could implement an XP cap (ie. yourlevel times standard mob xp times somesort of bonus minus ('x' times number of deaths) ) or some such.

Maybe even limit the amount of story arcs you can do in a day to 2 or 3 in order to prevent abuse?

Just a couple of ideas

Those who want to PL can PL though. Those who want to play with their friends can do exactly that.

My 2 pence.

And you really think a full team of lowbies with only one or two 50s in there are gonna stand up for very long in a 50s mission?

[/ QUOTE ]
I can clear lvl50 invincible missions @ 6x spawn with a pair of fire/kins, I don't doubt with the right mobs and the right build I could do it with an 8x spawn. If the SK was everyone else in the team, I would do I could PL six people at once rather than the current 2.

TBH for someone who often decries the lack of players I'm unsure why you want to be rid of a dynamic that helps people of different levels play together. If the is were WoW (or 99% of all other MMOs) if a friend starts playing a long time after you the only way to play together is to roll a new character. Worse is when the friend only plays an hour an evening and you would out level them quickly...

IMO SK & Exemplar are the two most important features of this game bar none, getting rid of them would be the worst thing possible!

And shouldn't this be in suggestions?

edit: Due to a really inaccurate thread title I did miss the point.
