Spent two hours in the pouring rain, with shoes that have holes in them, walking from one end of Dundee to the other, looking for a power supply for my laptop, and not one shop had any in stock.

As such, I'll probably be stuck at 40K until next Monday when I get back from Memorabilia.

That's it. I want a Mac. Or this ported to Windows. Or does something like this exist?

Does anyone remember Dumbo? I'm starting to feel like the train when it struggles to get up the hill. I'm hoping the top of the hill comes up soon, and waiting patiently for the "woo-woo" of the engine.

Until then, chug-chug-chug.

That looks pretty handy. Sounds like someone else is tiring of the cluttered, overbearing interface of their word processor

The only part of Dumbo I remember is the Pink Elephants on Parade bit and I'm saving that for when I've dinged 50k

Anyway, I just caught up with last night's deplorable effort and brought my word count up to schedule. I'll have to get another 2,000 in tonight to keep up though.

14,977 words to go. That's bound to sound closer than it actually is.

Following a little link tucked away in a corner there leads to this thing, which looks rather like a Windows version. ^_^

Character references! Artz! Whatnot!

I just want to say this: 35k!

Yes, it does feel good.

Well it pales somewhat after that but...

Pales my butt! You're fighting and writing and taking names 1k at a time. 20k is a grand milestone!

Way to go, girl!

I've pretty much given up, I'm on something like 600 words and I just can't find the inspiration to write anything.

Maybe I'll make the story into a comic instead.

I have been following my main characters closely for seven chapters and I suddenly realised that, five chapters ago, one of them had a dog... who hadn't been mentioned since....

I quickly rushed through those last five chapters adding what amounts to "and the dog was here too" so that's bumped my word count a bit!

Sadly, I have had to abandon the chapter structure I carefully set up in October. My characters just don't want to wait, and they've got to the city two chapters early. I hope there's enough action in there to sustain the rest of the story.

Today I developed a storyline, characters, drew maps of the world and the village most of the first part takes place in, and got a fair chunk of prologue written. No way I can finish, but still, looks like it could be a good story.

Bit of a slack day yesterday but I made up a bit of ground today.

12,972 words to go.

I know what you mean about characters doing their own thing and messing up planned chapters. In my notes I have "Chapter 4- 2nd battle, Russians push Germans back" but on the day it spread over into 3 chapters and the Germans ended up counter-attacking.
And I thought they were disciplined ones.

Got to say I probably won't be finishing in Nov as well, need 5,000 words a day to do it and don't have the energy with work as well, but I'll keep pushing.

On a side note, a little story.

Having bust open my shoe today and finishing work 40 minutes before my bus was due, I popped in for a drink. As I was clambering the stairs with my pint, the shoe caught and I nearly went flying into a group of people.

Heading over to my seat, I listened in and heard one person say "500 words in a day isn't much really..." and decided to talk to them.

Bing! Another Nano person. We chatted the rest of the time before I had to leave and promised to look each others stories up.

If you don't finish in November, then you don't finish in November - you've not lost a thing. However, if you get as far as you can and then just stop on the 1st of December, I assure you, you'll be thoroughly disappointed in yourself.

Ugh, I sound patronizing and horrid, don't I?

What I mean to say is, stop when you feel the story has come to an end. If your story ends at dead on midnight, fantastic! But if it doesn't, please don't let it sink into nothingness.

Even if it takes you another three years to finish, even if you read back through and start laughing at it, even if you write it all up and then delete it out of disgust - it doesn't matter. Just, please, get your stories out of your heads and down on paper. I'll drill sergeant you into it, if I have to! There's too much talent here to go to waste.

Write, please. If only so I can walk through a bookshop in five years time and screech, "Oh my god, I used to play CoH with that person! Oh my god, oh my god!"

OK, I've timed it down. I can knock out roughly one word every 2 seconds, with thought breaks. That means I can complete it in 20 hours. It's possible. Just possible.

Although anyone buying a book from someone that Stasis can recognise from these forums should be committed....

"Oh my God, it's Fire Guardian/Silver Weasel/Hidden Healer/Coile etc....."

Those will be some strange dustjackets to print

I noticed on the NaNoWriMo forum that December is NaNoFiMo

Even if I hit the 50k by the end of November I'm still going to be a long way from finishing the story, so there'll be a few of us who are still battling with ourselves to write enough words each day to move it on.

I also know that once my first draft is finished and the editing phase begins I'll probably lose at least a quarter of my NaNo word count. These days, when I find a phrase that uses 8 words to do the work of 3 I keep the 8.

I would just like to say that that Dark Room app that Coile and Maynia found is brilliant.

It's so much easier to be productive when Windows isn't seeping into your consciousness with web browsers and games and work.

Just reading through the NaNo news, and came across this "gem", and I really don't like where they're going with this:

[ QUOTE ]
One of the interesting stats that Russ discovered last year is that the biggest factor separating NaNo winners from non-winners isÂ…yep, you guessed itÂ…donation. The win rate for non-donors was 14%; donors had a 59% chance of breaking the 50K tape.

[/ QUOTE ]

It makes me shiver in a bad way.

Obviously they need donations to keep the site going, and fund their charities and get togethers - but they needn't use tactics like the above to get their donations.

Hrrm, think that might not be a tactic Honey. If you invest in something, you're more likely not to give it up, even if you want to.

But, 20k broken from my point

1800 words a day for the rest of the dash and I'm there. I took last night off, sorta. Still, I'm now convinced that I'll get there.

Do you guys listen to music while you write? If yes, what music, and how does it affect your writing?

I'll answer for myself a bit later, now I need to fly.
