No music for me, I find it too distracting. I keep wanting to sing along .

4k to go now, I'm finally starting to relax.

I've been listening to Sigur Ros a lot while I've been writing, it avoids the singalong aspect because I don't understand the words! I think it's good for the style I'm writing because it all has a sort of other-worldly fantasyish feel.

Soundtrack music - that's what I listen to whenever I'm doing something on the computer. It can be atmospheric without having you break into song.

Almost all of my music is from soundtracks . Stage musicals mostly, and they're the ones which force me to sing along the most. Ok, so I can't hit the same other-worldly notes Ms. Brightman can, but I can try, damnit!

On any given day, I'll be humming along to Dragonheart, Superman, Michael Nyman, Mozart, The Day After Tomorrow, Tomorrow Never Dies, Independence Day (yep, I like David Arnold), Pirates of The Caribbean, Butterfly Effect, Harry Potter, any of the Star Wars scores etc. *cough*and Transformers The Movie*cough*

Every now and again, songs will appear amongst the themes, but I like my eclectic mix - it does sometimes influence my story writing as it switches from joyful to mournful.

I can't listen to any music when I'm writing, it's just too distracting. When my brain starts drying up any sound becomes amazingly intrusive. House alarms, kids shouting, drunk students shouting, the damn computer fan; all these things have caused me tremendous mental anguish at times.

5k a day after work to write. That's 2.5 hours. Gonna be REAL tight.

For music I tend to use Shoutcast, Classical for Background, Nu-Age for Technical, Dark Ambient for Horror.

I'm one of those who really needs music, can't even play CoH without sound.

Two and half thousand words so far today which leaves me on 8,604 words to go. I really need to get that 604 words off (at least) tonight as I may not be able to get much writing in tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.

I laugh at how many words over 50k my story will run to

EDIT: And because it's been a while here's a new excerpt. (might be a bit grisly)

7 in the morning and I'm off to work. 24835.Finally got to sleep around 2. Roll on December

My gods Weasel, you're pummeling that poor remaining wordcount into oblivion with both hands! The pace you're going at is simply put brutal!

I'll see you at the massive "I can't believe we did it!" celebration as November fades into December and have a drinks glass waiting for you.

Meanwhile I have to look the other way as the mad chipping of the remaining count is too gruesome to watch. That, and I have no slack left since I have over 10k to go still...

1,230 words to go.

I could easily fill that today - but I'm going to wait until tomorrow.

40k cracked. Lunch break time, as soon as I make the said lunch.

Zergling activities are likely to crash down in a nasty way on today's further progress but I'll press on as much as I can.

Hold me a spot by the finish line, Stase. If you head to the bar I'll have a terva shot, thanks.

7,836 words to go and I think that's all the writing I'll be able to get done before Monday.

I'm at one of those "hmmm, what next" bits which have stalled progress a few times. Hopefully a day's break will loosen up the creative juices and it'll all run smoother when I get back to it.

I don't understand how I ever thought some of these set pieces would fit in a single chapter.

I have totally stalled.. still, with two days holiday I might, just might, be able to have a splurge and catch up.

I'm having trouble, I think, because the word count is making me pad things I didn't really want to pad, and I'm having trouble with that. If I don't do the 50k though, I will continue to work on the story, and next year I'll try again.

Just got in.

Four days left.

10,000 words.

Damn useless laptop not letting me write for the past week.

Personally, I've finished. Final word count: 57,098 on word.

You can find it here. If you feel inclined, cheer on the others on our SG board who are still going,

and on that subject ...

COME YOU GUYS! YOU CAN DO IT!!

[u]Jakey's secret to writing as fast as he runs[u]
Relentless is your friend, as is Red Rooster, tea, coffee, sherbet lemons, a tablespoon of sugar from the pot, jumping out of your chair and running down the stairs to throw yourself face down in the living room, cuddling the cat, fussing the dog.

But the most important of all is TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS! Seriously, every twenty minutes, just get up and walk off. It's good for your concentration. (I don't actually do this every twenty minutes, I do it every four hours, which is probably why my butt hurts and my legs get stiff)

Having insane 'genius' goggles probably helps too. I like to wear a stupid hat too, but that might just be a personal preference.

In SHORT, you really can do this.

Truly shattered and I finally know I won't be able to do it.

I'm heading for 40k and gonna stop there. I've had a full month, a social life, social commitments and a 40 hour week.

I've proved something to myself if not to others

I too, cannot finish in the time remaining. This last week has been a total bust really, haven't gotten a word written since I finished chapter 7. Still, I shall complete the story, if only to say that I've written a novel!

Well, I did it . I still have loads of story left to write - and I'll try to keep you all updated on how it's coming along. But now, rest for the remainder of the month, and next month - editing!

I suppose I have an advantage, I'm unemployed at the moment.

Not for long, a job will certain hamper my reckless wordsmithery.

I'm unemployed too! There's a pattern here somewhere... I'd probably have written more by now if it weren't for the fact the tips of my fingers have eroded.

...uh, and proctrastinating - that played a small part too.

Congrats, Jakey and Stase! Well done!

I have 7k to go and motivation has dipped into a new low. The story keeps expanding and spiraling and I'm losing the thread with which to tie it all together. 4 days. 7k words. Now it's just about having a bum of steel and typing stuff and hoping it yields something worthwhile in the end.

It's no good. Despite having today and tomorrow off work, there's no way I can do this. I still like my characters, but I don't like the story any more. I can't manage to sacrifice plot and good writing in the name of word count. What I've written so far is mostly tripe anyway, and I know that when I come back to this story I'll be starting by deleting most of it.

Plus, this Friday my family is descending on the house for my dad's birthday so I really, really, really need to get on with finding space for people to stay.

Next time, I'm going to write something so utterly daft I won't be able to take the story so seriously and I'll be able to think more about the word count.

Until then, I'll be in the other room with my hot chocolate and self-pity.

I've reached a point where I'm not sure if I want to force myself to finish. Due to the muck-up with my laptop power supply being sent to the wrong address, I didn't get a chapter or two done as hoped over the past week.

I have 9,000 words to go, but I also have an exam on Wednesday, and I need to attend this week's lectures as it's enaring the end of the semester, so I'm not sure I can justify the 4-5 hours a day writing anymore.

I may get a sudden burst of 'get on with it' after Wednesday's exam, but until then, I have more important things to worry about, such as getting through University.

Though, people can help cheer me up by nominating my novel for the Creative Genius award for November when it comes around. It's CoH/V related, and is perfectly suitable for a 12+ forum.
