Laughing at someone else's misfortune
[ QUOTE ]
I'm sure most people who read this will have had the experience of teaming with a blaster who loves to lie down, face first after a battle.
But the other day I was doing an SG TF and a random blaster sees us gathering at the contact, and asks if he can join us.
In all my time here I've never seen a blaster who loved to die so much!
He'd happily agro'd mobs, die, get rezzed and run off to the next mob, usually dying before the defender's Rez had recharged. He didn't seem to mind this. I think he felt guilty rather than resentful. Coz when a highly strung tanker quit the team in disgust (coz he'd died), the blaster asked "Was that my fault? Do you want me to leave?"
Naturally I said no, unless he was the one who killed the tank. As it was a PvE mission he stayed.
So by the end of the TF, the defender had spotted this pattern and would wait till someone else had died and use their AoE rez to catch the blaster and the other person at the same time. So he spent a lot of time lying around. Probably saved him from a lot of extra debt.
My question is, is it wrong that I found this sooo funny?
I mean a bad Tank, say not taunting, or a bad empath who won't heal, is costing the team dearly.
But a blaster who just gets themselves killed is no skin off my nose. Luckily the team was good quality, in the main, so we could handle playing with one man dead. The mobs were no trouble.
I was putting a team together to fight Adamastor last night when I saw this blaster's name on my search list. I invited him simply because I knew he'd run off and do something daft and get himself killed. Great value entertainment.
He arrived in DA, the defender TP'd him to us, and the first thing he did was fire a sniper attack at the GM!
A tank in the group pulled the GM off him, so he ran back in and punched Adamastor!
Poor, poor man.
I'm slightly ashamed to say that I'd team with him any time just to laugh at this strange player. We did try explaining to him what he's doing wrong, but he got quite upset and thought we were being overly critical, so we left him alone...
Oh well. We get all sorts.

He sounds crazy, even for a Blaster.
But think of it this way - if they're not making us laugh, then what is the point of a Blaster?

Debtmeister General of The Plastic Army & Empire
I remember teaming with a blaster (whose name I've forgotten) many, many months ago who liked to stay permanantly at the debt cap. Whereas most people tell you how much xp tnl, he'd moan about only have 200K debt and promptly run off and get himself killed - usually to a big shout of "Yay!!". He never did it when the team was in danger tho, only when we were taking a breather between groups (although he didn't mind getting himself killed to save the team). He was good to team with and had reached 50 last time I saw him.
But then there was the blaster a few weeks back who finally turned up half way through a mission I was on. The mobs were +6 to him but he didn't ask for an sk, just turned on whirlwind and charged into the banished pantheon group we were getting ready to attack. He lasted about 2 seconds. I finally rezzed him (no hurry), we moved to the next group and he did exactly the same! Then he quit and logged whilst faceplanted without ever saying one word to the team the whole time he was there. I'll admit to laughing quite a lot at his misfortune...
I am laughing here I as I read that. But I think after a while it would bore me.
I remember this blaster in the Hollows who kept AOEing mobs instead of the sual pull and agroing far more than we could handle. But best case scenario was when he either got too close or outright charged in. But it was his insitance on demanding rez while being in the middle of an extra large mob. Erm no Im not going in there thanks.
I was informed by the team leader after 3 of us lost our rag with him that he couldnt understand Engllish. Ok fair enough but didnt the deaths and debt act as a good clue he shouldnt be aggroing like that? Especially the ones that got us all bumped off.
The topic title...the G-Man...Gooooorrrrrrddddooooonnnn!

Or a troller that doesnt prevent aggro excess... well , being or not blaster's fault, its a fact that they usually pay the prize for the team's lacks, as they will always aggro loads. Referring to ur team, if the defender could AoE rez, then it was not an empath, but a dark defender, so it's main purpose would be debuff rather than heal. If the tank and the controller dont keep the aggro away from the blaster, that blaster will be usually the first to faceplant, no matter how good it is or if he dies due to his own mistakes or not either...
Yet, it's true that blasters are nuts. I still remember teaming with one who thought that blasters uber power was whirlwind... and before the rest of the team had attacked the mobs yet
You do realize blasters fight so much better with a bit of debt.
If I had it happen many times that as long as I had debt I wouldn't faceplant often, but as soon as I lost debt I would faceplant many times within the next 2-3 fights.
That is the way of the blaster, A true blaster doesn't mind some debt.
I had to laugh at a blaster I teamed with on a respec before (maybe not at the time, but definitely afterwards ). We were on one side of the big room where you have to find the key and rescue scientists and he decided to 'snipe' the freaks over by the proximity bomb. He used Ice Storm to do it.... Lots of peed off freaks came running at us and half the team was wiped. I mentioned to him that raining ice down on top of their heads was not usually considered a snipe attack. His response? "What? I saw an opportunity so I went for it."
Silly, silly blaster.
Yes, Blasters are crazy, i should know, i am one. And whats this stuff about a Blaster not being a propper Blaster without debt, i have no debt *goes out and dies* hehe

I was on that TF with essell and the crazy blaster. He really did continually run in all the time. The time when I found it most annoyingwas when only half the team had got into one of the missions and he ran in and aggro'd the first group. Being the helpful guy that I am I charged in after him and tied to rescue him, didn't work out that way and both of us and someone else died.
It continued like that all the way through the TF, one time I was ghosting looking for the boss and, even though he knew I was ghosting, decided to try and solo his way through through the mobs. Needless to say, he didn't last long.
Then there was the time in a rescue the hostage mission (one of the oones where the hostage can die) when he and I had ghosted to the hostage and were waiting for the TPer to reach us. What does he do? well of course he has to snipe one of them standing right beside the hostage. Fortunately doesn't aggro the enemy that is actually guarding the hostage and what followed was a frantic battle with the 2 of us fighting loads of other enemies. Afterwards I told him again that it was stupid of him to do that and his response "I know"
If someone is happy to commit death-by-lunacy thats fine by me. But when they start aggroing before the entire team is in and resulting in others dying too that'd annoy me.
Get them one of those baby-leash thingies so they can't go wandering off causing hassle before everyones in & ready
Though they do silly things, i do love the 'heroic' actions they sometimes perform. Against some CoT's we got a nearly teamwhipe, leaving me (tanker) and a blaster as only 2 alive. The defender used a rez-insp, but a nearby group caught his attention. The blaster popped BU/Aim, ran into the group and popped his Nova.. died 3 seconds later, but long enough for the defender to get out of range and getting ready for a team-rez.
Several retreats i had to do in missions, most of the times the blaster took the 'heroic' style and really 'fought till the bitter end' just to get the rest of the team in safety.
The other side, a nrg/ice blaster i knew just kept dying over and over again, he kept trying and trying and do his best for the team. But as the others lvl'ed up, he fell behind paying of his debt again. So i went out with my tanker on basicly each mission he could get trying to learn him some tips and tricks how to get around, taunting the group when it get too hard. Around december last year i got a message if i would like to join his team for about 5 minutes, for him just to show.. he dinged 50.
Being blaster isnt style nor art.. its a way of life

Being a good Blaster means you learn from dying. You need to work out what you can go up against, what to take out first cos it mezzes you etc. It's about being a solo juggernaut and knowing your capabilities yet not being an aggro magnet liability in teams. It's about communication, it's about teamwork.
All Blasters will die, that's a fact, but dying has to mean you learn something or you just repeat a doomed formula.
Ace tales. I'd say you're laughing with rather than at them - I'm sure they have a pretty good sense of humour (debt does that to people ) and are quite aware of the amusement they bring to any team!

And here was me thinking it was about hitting things a lot until they fall over, or I do!

It IS about hitting things til they fall over. That's what makes Blasters so much fun.
It isn't about repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
I am immensely proud of playing a Blaster who was my first character, and sure, I made mistakes with power picks, with tactics etc but you have to decide what works and what doesn't.
There seems to be a stereotype of the Blaster as aggro-magnet/poor player and it's one that even most Blasters seem to play off of and run with at some point. I certainly have.
I found playing my Blaster was incredibly tactical and calculated simply because if you make one mistake with a mis-used power or not knowing where you are on a map, you die pretty quick.

From the sounds of it, nothing was wrong there, moreover, it sounds like everything was just right. Read though before you judge hehe.
The blaster seemed to be enjoying himself, despite dying. If he wasn't enjoying himself I would doubt he would have stayed playing. 1 Tick for blaster enjoyment.
From what you've said it doesn't appear that he endangered the team much or at all and his actions did not get any other member of the team killed, thus: 1 Tick for non-agro-team-magnet-full-faceplant er yea....
Finally, you enjoyed watching him faceplant everywhere and it made you laugh and enjoy yourself + the added bonus of a successful team. 1 Tick for your enjoyment. 1 Tick for successful team.
If you ask me we should all be so lucky to be in groups like that.
Oh and in addition, Faulty, zoot rules :P

The best ever blaster i have ever seen in action had just one debt badge at 41. The guy knew how to act and when. He must of been is some good teams though.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
With referance to the people who are fighting the Sterotype of blasters being gung-ho muppets with all the debt badges by level 20, I understand not all blasters are like that.
You guys are right that it's very tough for blasters sometimes, their nature means they do damage, which means agro but they're as squishy as non-damage dealers.
My Wife's first Char was a fire blaster, and she was very good at it because she knew when to hit and when to hold fire. You might feel like you're doing nothing sometimes, but thats usually better than debt.
That said, most gung-ho muppets who get all the debt badges by level 20 seem to be making blasters, and they give the rest of you a bad reputation!
As I said in the Kheldian forum, "Being effective is secondary to having a good time"
