The best thing "that game" did for CoH

I was browsing the forums of another similar MMO game to CoH and realized the best thing it did for CoH was take alot of the [censored] and whining posters.

It seems like posters on those forums are trying to validate their leaving CoH by bashing it. It is quite humorous. If you have time to throw away while the CoH forums are down I would recommend reading them some.

"another similar MMO game to CoH"?

I didn't realize 'Superhero League of Hoboken' got made into an MMO?

No, the best thing CO (shall we call a spade a spade?) did for CoX is prompt the developers to get off their azzes and start delivering things that are... ok, not exactly groundbreaking, but long asked for.

There were threads with eloquent explanations why body type changes and power customizations were impossible or at least not viable. We have body type changes NOW, and Power Spectrum is coming soon(tm).

And (I want to believe) that as CO flaunts their new shiny zones, missions and features, CoX team will have no choice but match them blow for blow. I love CoX, but it is OLD. It needs a lot of modernization to keep up, and what better incentive than a young, good-looking, upstart competitor?

Really, I wish CO the best. I hope they turn out the greatest content ever seen in a superhero game. Because NCSOFT will have to match it and beat it.

We have Positron & Co., who have proven that given the right incentive, they can accomplish A LOT.

They have Jack Emmert and his ED.

I'm betting on us.

Yup yup. Nothing steps up performance like some good old face to face competition. Not of the "Oh, there's other MMOs out there." But now it's "OH! There's other Comics MMOs out there!". Stepping into the COX niche means they've got to step up the game.

I'll admit to trying the beta. And while it's the beta and expected to be rough, I tried to like the game because it was a property I've known and loved for years. It had some improvements over COX in the character designer. I really tried to like it. Rolled up many test characters and played them, trying to get into it. Tried levelling them up to see if I liked it. And somewhere in there I realized I was trying way to hard to like a game, when there's already a similar game I loved. So I just stopped bothered trying. I'll be staying here, thanks.

SG Mate: Cien, what the hell is this Rookery thing?
RadDidIt: (interjecting) Dude. It's the Rookery.
SG Mate: Yeah, but what IS it?
RadDidIt: Silliness Incarnate.

Stil being in the Beta myself...all I can say is that I'm not leaving CoX anytime soon.

But I love the push it's given our Dev team, hopefully even more goodies will come out once the Launch of DCUO gets closer

This.

I plan to play CO and I'll like it. I'll always like and continue to pay for CoX too. I am thrilled that there is competition out there. It breeds a need for all involved companies to keep pushing their envelopes and get high ticket items out the door for their players. Keep it coming!

My only issue with the Spade we speak of is that is may be a fall back position if things explode here.

TO be honest, I'm starting to stumble a bit. I'm finding more and more of my community basing their judgment of me and my friends on their level then their ability to kinetic, their ability to tank, their ability to fireball, and how well they do it. I normally don't complain here, but I don't know what else to do.

It's great for you wonderful folks that have multi tier SG's, you can easily just call a team together and start out your day. Thats your right, you've all earned it through hard work and sweat and tears building yourself together.

So I guess I'm going to start having to rake up as many people as I can to help keep my people entertained as well. I can't be the only one being discouraged, and the content I try to throw at them, it's hard to keep up. It's hard to think of new stories to keep them interested, it's hard to do alot of this.

Of course you could easily say: Thats your job as their leader

I know it, and I'll keep doing it until it begins to effect my health. o.o It's either shut up and do your job, or become a low level member and enjoy the game. The game's done alot for me, it accepted my people after my guild was shattered from the NGE over in SWG. I can only try to bring as many people with me to the game as I can. o.@

Now had I ever seen this spade you speak of, I'd have to say it was entertaining on a personal level, but lacks a team oriented feel. Thats of course from everything I've heard of it from certain friends in beta.

Also, nice new boards

As the original poster once said City of Heroes Had some Issues, and the person behind Statesman would answer in ways that were not always pleasing.
My roommate and I went to some Con here in L.A.. We wanted to see him and ask him some questions, and to see if he would sign his "hero click" which he did. this was around when Villains was first announced.

My roommate and I had some serious questions for him.
Sadly, my memory is not perfect so these are not direct quotes.

Roommates’ question:
“I would like to revisit past mission arcs solo with my level 50?”

Statesman’s answer:
“We have the Side Kick system for that, and you can always role another character to try the different content, we don’t feel any single character should be able to solo all the content.”

Recent Answer:
Ouroboros
((Side note this was a major reason why we ended up playing WOW as much as we did))

My Question
“I was wondering if about major body changes, so when you doing heroic things you where one body type, and when you where not you could be someone very different ((my reason for asking was I had already come up with my Character “Malkavian Who?” …))

Statesman’s Answer:
“Your Character is already in their Secrete Identity and there is no need for that kind of change.”

Recent Answer:
Mad Scientist Pack

Not sure who asked but I know several folks from these very forums where there, like smersh..
“What about City of Heroes on a Mac?”

Statesman’s Answer
/em sarcastic look “we have no plans for making City of Heroes compatible with Apple”

Recent answer
There is a Mac download now

Has anyone noticed when cryptic studios left and Paragon studious the Dev team started working on content that was being highly requested. I remember seeing a post by positron or Babs think it was about MA. "We would not be able to make this content if We were still working with cryptic." they also started on power custimization after they broke apart and i think Going Rogue. So basically Champions itself is a great thing for the " City of " franchise.

on topic: the best thing "that Game" did to us was force Posi to give us awesome updates.

I've been watching CO closely and honestly I have pre ordered it just to see how I enjoy it through Beta. I am not willing to drop the full 50 dollars to pick up a game by Jack again without playing it first.

I'm giving Jack a fair and honest shot. If it delivers then I'll be playing both for a bit. If it doesn't then oh well.

Funny story on how I got a hold of a pre order. Went into my Gamestop to pick up a game card and was told they were liquidating the old cards for new cards coming in. Manager told me he was going to toss it anyway so preorder a couple game and get 60 days free.

The way I figure it is that I paid 5 dollars to play CoH for 60 days. CO is just the odd looking desert that may or may not be worth while.

It's nothing new, the bashing anyways. People should of grown to just learn that others have a phase of their own every once in a while. I did the same crap when I announced my leaving from EQ back when I was 16.

Champions Online? Well, we have nothing to worry about. Sure, City of Heroes does have a few things they need to catch up on in order to stay competitive in the current 1, soon 2, after 3 pronged Super Hero MMO race, but it's nothing drastic.

One thing: City of Heroes is Mac and PC only. Champions Online is PC and Xbox 360. DCU is PC and PS3. Name me an MMO that has been made for a computer and a console platform at the same time that has been successful. Final Fantasy XI is not a suitable example because it was originally made for the PS2 in mind and was ported to the PC afterwards. Also it's not that successful here.

Thing 2: Player created content. City of Heroes has the Mission Architect. Players can make stories about whatever they want. I'm preaching to the choir here about the Mission Architect, because you all know what it can do. Ignore the downside of farming and AE babies for the sake of this argument. The closest thing I've seen for Champions Online is this 'Nemesis' system. You make a nemesis you fight against, I guess. Not sure what's involved in it.

Thing 3: Customization of characters. What's this, a blow to City of Heroes? Yes, folks. I'm sorry. Champions Online has a more robust character creator from what I've heard. More options for costumes, back pieces like a quiver, jetpack, or swords are some. Also, you can choose whatever powers that are in the game as powers your character can have, in any combination? Didn't City of Heroes plan to have that pre-alpha, and it didn't go through because of balance issues? If Champions does it right and keeps balance, I'd be impressed. However this isn't big enough to make a switch.

Thing 4: Jack Emmert. We had him and from what I heard it was 'his vision' that the game was going on. Everyone focuses on the bad of ED, but I don't think that it's so bad. No more 1acc 5 dmg powers, or 6 slotted stamina, or perma hasten without set bonuses. Imagine today if ED didn't exist with IOs. Did you just solo Hamidon? Seriously. One man Hami raids. Bye-bye difficulty, hope to see you on the other side!
Well, back to the discussion. He's gone. It's more what players seem to want over what the devs seem to want. He oversees Champions. It'll be his vision for that.

Some people may leave here to play Champions. Just like the Mission Architect, they'd just use it because it's the new shinies. After the novelty wears off they'll return to the actual City of Heroes game. With I16: Going Rouge, and then City of Heroes: Going Rogue coming out, the devs here sure show that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.

I'm excited to try CO and see what it has to offer. I definitely won't be canceling my CoH account, but I think it will be great to try a game with new costumes, new travel powers, and new enemies. I'm stoked!

I don't understand the animosity toward CO and Jack Emmert. As a fan of superhero games, having another one on the market is a blast. And while I don't always agree with Statesman's design decisions, I admire his willingness to make bold choices, and he's now spearheaded two superhero MMOs -- so for that alone, I owe him my firstborn. Take care of her, States!

I got my preorder a little different. I was trading in a couple of games I don't play anymore Resistance: Fall of man, and Elder Scrolls 4 (I just picked up GoTY ed.) and had enough to put down on the preorder so I just said **** it, if its good then I get to fly at lvl 1 if not oh darn I didn't lose anything....

Be honest everyone, most of you are really curious about CO. Personally though, I only have room for one paid MMO so CO is gonna have to do some major wowing to make me give up 27 months of time with CoX

Inherently it wasn't, of itself, a bad thing. But it was the fact they changed AI (improving difficulty) and punished the players (ED). Ultimately it changed the game and how it played for many who have grown so used to the original style. Therefore they grew frustrated when the new way to play came into play; driving many nuts. Did for me, I watched Elude get shafted horribly right after and it sucked.

Over all my problem with Jack was that he was selfish. When players began playing differently than intended not only did he punish them but that punishment also came around to players who didn't even condone to those playstyles. These actions said, "This is my game, you play it my way." which to me, doesn't come across as anything noble.

Unfortunately some things are being repeated.

5.) Graphics. CoV has shiny, well-textured graphics that consistently get better over time. CO has graphics that look like a coloring book.

That's the beginning and end of it for me right there.

Oh, I plan on sticking around too. Once September rolls around I'm probably going to purchase yet another (14 months) of subscription time. Once Going Rogue preorders are out, you bet I'm going to preorder that as well.

Will this game get boring? I've taken time off every so often, but since I do not need to connect every day, and can join whenever and I'll still get something new to do.

CO is not my cup of tea. While City is button mashing, there is at least a bit of logic in the order that you mash them. I was unable to put any logic to an attach chain in CO. I did like the character creation but there is a significant loss of detail, at least that I noticed, which surprised me with a new game.

On another note, watched, but didn't get a chance to play, DC Online. It looks fantastic but I think, in the end, anything that is being made compatible with any game council will not be as sophisticated as one made solely for a PC.

I love this game and love it more the more i play it.
