AE stopping the farming
I'm going to have to go with Deth here, I was bored of CoH before AE came out. I'd resub every few months for a couple of months, and burn out. I haven't had this problem since AE came out, and have enjoyed the game more for it.
|
Do they play the old content or do they just play AE content?
Of course, but we aren't talking just old player, what about new players?
Do they play the old content or do they just play AE content? |
What does that matter, as long as they are having fun in game, honestly? Everytime someone starts one of these 'AE is....' threads in all the agnst over what it's doing to new players; people forget one thing the Devs themselves stated about the AE:
"It's an alternate (yet valid) method to get from level 1 to level 50 should a player so choose."
(And no, I DON'T condone 'exploitive' farming or power-leveling and neither do the Devs, so that's not what I'm talking about or implying at all when I'm talking about AE as an alternate leveling method).
Also, it just seem to be more true then not that those who complain about not being able to fimnds teams; are the same ones used to logging in, getting a blind invite, and going from there. Those days are numbered, and will be numbered even moreso when I16 hits. Those days are gone and are never coming back; so adjust or /ragequit, makes no difference.
I also want to chime in and say I've been in CoX off and on since December 2003 (early closed beta); and like many of the folks above I had burned out and was 'off and on' with CoH from Issue 5 on. Issue 9 held my interest (with the Invention system) a bit longer than most of the other post I5 issues, but I still burned out and when to my off and on here and there mode; until I14 and the AE. Now I'm back with more new alts (although I don't farm or PL because this game is so incredibly easy compared to any other MMO out there, there's no point; not to mention the fact CoX has NEVER had an 'endgame' - all the 'raiding' (via TF/SF) is don AS you level up, so PLing is a waste IMO; unless you PvP hardcore I guess); and I've re-upped for longer so far than with any post I5 issue.
That said, nothing will EVER stop Farming (exploitive of otherwise) completely in any MMO, ever; no matter what a Dev team does. Compared to the Playerbase, a Dev Team is a small but focused group always jumping to the next deadline; so 150K+ players are ALWAYS going to find the exploits and holes a Dev Team misses; and use them as long as possible. The balance that has to be struck, is making sure Farming is reigned in enough WITHOUT totally gutting some new content or feature that the VAST majority of the regular playerbase (aka the non min-maxing power gamers; you know those that just play with their frieds to have fun and don't worry about level speed, efficient enhancement slotting, etc. - and that IS the majority of Players in ANY MMO).
Anything that 99% stops Farming and PLing in the AE would also gut the functionality of the AE; so while the Devs will be sure to plug major holes and exploits, I would not expect the AE XP gain/reward structure to change drastically. If the Devs go that route, it will most likely kill this new, innovative feature, and cost them just as many subs as PL burnout.

[ QUOTE ] They keep forgetting about the spawn slider coming. > [/ QUOTE ] You do realize that the spawn slider, unless enabled for AE missions, is meant as a tool to attract people to farm the normal game content, where the Devs actually have much better control over exploits and Risk vs Reward concepts, right? [/ QUOTE ] Who cares? Like i said.....nerfs, exploits, fixes, they don't bother me. I will still find an efficient way to gain my rewards faster than the normal player. I'm a powergamer, that's what I do. I enjoy it. Let them keep fixing stuff, it won't bother me. I'm still going to look for the most efficient manner I can attain my rewards, and if they nerf that method, I'll find another. It's not AFFECTING ME. It's affecting the "regular" players. And frankly, I don't really care. lol I pay for my sub. No one does. So I'm going to play how i want to play, and if affects the rest in a manner they don't like, I don't care, because this is ONLY a game. It's not the end of the world. |

Dev - Sorry, that person cannot be on a team with you, it's exploitive. No... not that person either.. no... the rewards MUST equate to the risks, and if they with you it's not fai... no, not that player either...
oh, last lastly, what is going to happen when i16 hits and people are customizing their toons? are all you people gonna be here [censored] that customization is ruining the game because people aren't teaming with you because they are to busy customizing their toons? |
ROFLMAO!!! ROAR!!!
Damn smooth point!
1. Yeah, I got bored WAYYYYYYYY before AE came out, mostly because they kept messing with my ability to farm up new toons to play with.
2. When they launch that new difficutly slider, that will go away. It will go back to the old school PI model of pay to play on the PL farms, as fillers won't be needed. Nooblets will have to either go back to content, or they will have to try to make the PL teams themselves. If you have ever been in a PuG PL group with a nooblet, you will understand how truely hilarious this is. They usually end tragically, with anyone that actually knows game mechanics or has any real experience leaving as fast as they can, extremely pissed off. This will alleviate a lot of the big problems with AE nooblets. Not that there weren't idiots with level 50s that had no idea how to play their toons BEFORE AE came around. 3. Hate to tell people this, but leveling from 1-50 on pure content is not that hard anymore. They pretty much "cheapened" level 50s in issue 4 or 5(can't remember which) when they changed the leveling curve and reduced debt the first time. One of the reasons they did that - rampant farming. Farming will NEVER go away, it will just change forms. 4. Farming kept a lot of us from leaving the game. When you have seen pretty much all of the content, and you want to try out a new toon, farming is nice. When you have had enough of badge hunting, have pretty much all of that accolades, and want to try a new toon, farm one up and go do the fun stuff with him. The more of a hassle it is to get a new toon leveled up when you get bored the less likely I am to keep playing. Is one of the reasons I quit for awhile. Would reactivate for new content, burn through, then leave again. Now with AE, I can do what I did before, almost as easily. Thats right, ALMOST as easily. Some of the old school farms from way back in the day were faster and easier. 5. As for people having a harder time finding groups. I am calling shenanigans on this. LEAVE AP. Plenty of people are leveling up with content. As far as not being able to find people in PI, especially on Freedom, again, shenanigans. When I do want to run stuff there, I find groups fast. But, if I really feel like playing with a group, I will start one instead of expecting one to come to me. Stop being lazy. As has been said, globals are your friend. On Freedom, Freedom Events. TFs forming pretty regular. Also, everyone that complains saying that the rewards or XP in AE is higher, please, ****. It has been shown NUMEROUS times that AE gives less rewards than normal content already. You don't get the drops, you don't get mission completion bonus, and the XP for the mobs is EXACTLY THE SAME. It just seems like it's more because most AE farms are all bosses. Risk vs. reward people, boss farms are not easy unless you have a GOOD, BALANCED lvl40+ team. I am talking about the type of group that is going to steamroll normal content anyway, and drops AVs like they are minions(GOD I love those kinds of teams). Level 54 boss farms, the nooblets PL farm of choice are PAINFUL on a team with a bunch of lowbies, and is pretty damn slow leveling compared to even PI farms. In most of said groups, the nooblets don't understand game mechanics, like aggro caps. I actually had one tell me that my ice tank needed taunt, because then I could get aggro from a stray chasing a squishy. When I told that taunt was worthless when you are already over the aggro cap, i.e., when farming, if I wasnt capped, I would have the mobs attention already anyway, and with aggro auras would have no issue keeping it. He actually asked me why, on a farm no less, I would try to herd up that many mobs. I don't usually, unless I know the group can handle, or UNLESS SOME STUPID NOOBLET AGGROES ANOTHER GROUP OR TWO. Then there was the stupid Inv tank that at level 42 didnt have temp inv., and wouldnt run his other toggles. Or the level 33 Inv tank that only had passives. People need to stop comparing this game to others as far as farming and PLing go, especially WoW. The style of this game is different from traditional MMOs, which is why I started playing it in the first place. The pacing is sooooo much faster. WoW is full of tedious crap that is a massive timesink, giving the illusion that you are accomplishing something, when in reality you are just pissing away time. If you removed the timesinks, like 15min plus taxi times, that's right 15 minutes to take a flight between zones where all you do is stare at your toon and a birds ***, I could level a toon to max level just as fast. When the Burning Crusade came out, the devs estimated the first toon to make it from 60-70 would take a month, minimum. Took 4 days. WOTLK, first toon made it from 70-80 in @24 hours, legitimately. He did it solo FARMING specific mobs in a certain area. Farming for cash and materials, yeah, and overinflated prices, THAT doesn't happen in WoW. How many of you have had your accounts hacked and toons stripped? I know at least 15 people that have happened to, not including myself. Hell, I spent 2 hours griefing someone that had hacked my friends account and was farming with it. Wait, thats right, in WoW, it's not griefing to train mobs onto people and essentially steal mats and kills from people. As for the level population, run a census mod, there are more lowbies than 80s by far. Power Gaming is Power Gaming, doesn't matter what game it is, people will find the fastest most efficient ways of doing things. You can remove all the possible forms of farming, nerf us so we can only kill a couple minions at a time like in other MMO, and at the end of the day, people will still complain that someone isn't playing the game "pure". |
On Saturday; double exp weekend... I canceled my account. I'm not renewing. i16, Going Rogue or not. Every MMO I make it a mission to making a strong character, strong as possible, just looking at the market, I know the way I play, the time spent, getting purples and unique proc's, and LoTG's, badges, accolades, would be a enormous time sink. Not worth the time anymore. Missions were rarely fun to begin with, different, AE or not. Soloing against nothing but bosses was a challenge, but dull after a while. Mission objectives are all the same and dull. Task and strike forces are the only missions I view WORTH playing. AE has really changed everything, it would hard to go back to what it was before it, I'd imagine, but farms would still exist. I hated TV farms personally, boring as hell.
If AE has taken the joy out of it for you, quit, stop playing.
....And NO........I'm not giving you my stuff.. :P

You really think they would not have fun with doing old content? You really think that AE content is only way to have fun?
It's not about do YOU have fun, it's about how long this game survive if developers does make this game fast food game.
This is wrong, never suggest anyone quit because sertain game content. AE should be addional content to players to have fun, it should not affect anyone else ability have fun. This is about balance, old content vs new AE content. AE content should be option as giving something new and interesting for players who has done it all. Now AE content gives so much faster leveling for new players, than why would they even try old content?
Because with AE, they gonna level 10 times faster and get bored with game 10 time faster. That's the problem here.

New players don't have to suffer through many of the old things we dealt with when the game was younger. You have a rather fixated view on what is the goal in the game, and what isn't. Your (and others') view apparently is that leveling IS the game, that the journey is the goal, so if the journey is shorter then a player will grow bored more easily. Some even complain that there is no 'end game' once you hit 50.
I disagree. Once you hit 50, you have little difficulty getting groups, especially if you want to mess around with lower-level content or friends. This isn't so in many games, but the exemplar system makes it possible in CoX. You can just go have fun without worrying about dying or needing to catch up. My view is that having FUN is the game.
Content is a lot more interesting and easier to pay attention to when you don't have to worry about dying horribly and getting a lot of debt, though it is better than it used to be. Leveling is less fun when it seems like you're getting nowhere fast (more true of the game in the past than now, but still it is tedious). That's where burnout occurs, where tedium and boredom set in.
I have not been in the game that long. I have been playing since June 09. My main toon is only a 25 but I have a toon that is 39. I have only played one farming mission (not on either of these toons) and I personaly found it boring compared to the story arc. However, it was exciting to level up a little faster. I read somewhere it should take a person a few months of game time to reach level 50 playing the story arcs etc rather than Farming. The advantage I see in having AE, for me personaly, is when I get the toons I really want to play (one of each archtype) to level 50 via story arcs. If I wanted to try a different type of archtype (diff powers) I could go ahead and level faster maybe to level 35 (when game really opens up for toons) and then continue with story arcs to get more familiar with that different toon and be ready for level 50 TF and raids. Anyway, I just would hate to see it go away all together. Besides, it is a good way to meet level 50 toons and you can team with them later. I have met one toon in AE that I continue to mish with on story arcs. He also has a great AE mish that I hope someday to beat. So from my limited experience I see an advantage to keeping it the way it is. If you find you do not want to play with a toon due to his inexperience just dont invite him/her again. My two cents for what it is worth.
Did you read my post clearly? No. I stand by what I said. I never said AE didn't bring anything good, I said that it brought few good things. The ability to offer a greater challenge to the small percentage of people looking for it is one of the good things. The ability to be creative in storytelling is another good feature. There's several good things about MA.
I just feel the bad is still outweighing the good. You criticize me for saying that and for people latching on to a negative aspect and overlooking the good, but you latch onto the one of the few good things and overlook the bad. |
I'm not overlooking the bad, I just don't see it the way you do. People are PLing characters to 50 really fast. Guess what? They did that before MA (or have you never been to Peregrine or Grandville, especially after the option to shut off xp gain was introduced in I13?). People are farming tickets. So what? Pre-MA, there was a disincentive to group due to the way rewards (salvage, recipes) are distributed. So those who were able....farmed for drops. The only difference is, the MA makes it far more convenient as it centralizes all of those things. Guess what? That was by design. Think not? Ever hear of the concept of a 'quest hub'? Central gathering areas where players are naturally designed to congregate in, to promote socialization? What's the single most common aspect of these areas? They're convenient. Everything is all there, quest NPCs, vendors, transport, tradeskill machines (if applicable), all of that. Capital cities in vanilla WoW (and later, Shattrath and Dalaran) are great examples. MA is CoX's equivalent. That...is.....good. Places where players congregate are good for people who don't have built-in social networks from which to draw.
You say 'more bad than good' because that's your perspective. Me? I've played MMOs long enough to know that what one player sees as 'bad', other players see as 'good' (like raiding, for example). I don't mind AE spam because it's usually confined to one zone on each side (Atlas Park and Cap au Diable). I can avoid those zones, easily (I haven't started a toon in Atlas Park since 2004 - Galaxy City is far better IMO). I don't like joining teams simply doing paper/scanner missions (BORING!) and pre-AE, guess what was constantly being spammed in KR/Talos and Cap/Sharkhead? But did I advocate for those missions to somehow be changed or altered? Um, no, because they serve a purpose (omg, is it convenience again?!?). The one major good thing about AE to me is that I haven't received a blind invite since its introduction on any character except my main (not surprisingly, she's a 50 brute) and I hide her from searches and invites for the most part.
So yeah, for me, there's very little bad and a whole ton of good.

There is both posive and negatives in AE's.
Positives: 1. More challenging missions and maybe even possibility for new missions. 2. Higher level players can easyly to get in AE teams 3. Player can design missions and create new looking missions. Negative: 1. Allows extreme fast powerleveling, what can cause faster burn out of players (bored). |
2. Spoils the new players, as they can be invited to these PL farm AE missions. |
3. Lower the achievements of this game, like value of lvl 50 characters. |
4. Alot of farming as doing same missions over and over, what could mean bored players. |
5. Players who don't do AE missions for farm or PLing, has alot harder time to find normal teams. |
Of course some of those stuff is depending view point of player as what kind of player is.
Here's the modified Positives:
1. More challenging missions and maybe even possibility for new missions.
2. Higher level players can easyly to get in AE teams
3. Player can design missions and create new looking missions.
4. Extreme fast powerleveling which can get players to end game content quicker.
5. Allows new players the option to experience more of the game quicker.
6. Players no longer have to farm the same mission over and over.
7. Encourges game play beyond level 50.
8. Much easier to find teams if your running AE or regular content.
Basically, those 5 negatives that you listed are my 5 positives. This is my opinion, just like your list is your opinion. I won't debate that the above hasn't happened, but I will debate the effect it has had on this game.

How ever, this and many other threads about AE problems, would not even exists if there would not be something wrong. You are powerleveler and farmer, so you view point isn't surprise. I'm just sad that so many player looks they own needs and doesn't think what's good for the game in long run. Because CoX is becoming joke, farmers and powerlevelers paradise. I use to recommend CoX in other forums as good game, I don't do it anymore.
Like You and me sayed, these stuff is depending players own view points.

What's good for the game is more content. Whats good for the players is more choice.
If players CHOOSE to play a single type of content it's not the games fault.
Thats where your wrong. These problems have ALWAYS existed. MA didn't invent PL and farming. CoX has ALWAYS been a farmers and PL'ers paradise.

1. AE missions, no level limits, in normal mission levels does limit, even with SK system.
2. AE missions allows like 10 times faster leveling.
3. AE missions doesn't require traveling
To have CHOISE they have to be equal desired, do you think they are?
Farming and powerleveling allways exist, no-one here is denying it. It's just question, what is dominate game playing style. The old story related CoX is dying. New Cox is all about farming and powerleveling. CoX has never been farmer and powerlevels paradise, before MA. Just because it exist in EVERY mmorpgs, doesn't mean game is design for it. It's not about can you do it, it about how common it is in the game. Little like 10% player doing it or 50% player base doing it.

AE stopping the farming |
as time has shown us, they will only curb (think that's the word...) it and not stop it, unless they really want to alienate their entire player base.
Level 1-50 in a matter of days |
Then please, quit the game and stop complaining. I'm sure 2 people will replace your spot.

You have your opinion, have a nice day. I only say goodbye the old good CoX and welcome farmers and powerlevelers CoX.
Yes it was, but was it this common that it is now?
I played the old CoX over 3 years. So don't come to say me that I don't see the major shift in playing style. People like me, who actually liked the old CoX are leaving because MA.

But seriously... I'm a fan of leveling fast, but the there needs to be some way to rid atlas of the LF FARM spam. I have no problems with farming, but new players that come to atlas will have way to much chat to scroll through, before they can figure out what's going on.
And no, AE is not going to kill CoX. And even farmers don't just stick to AE content. Maybe people who race to 50, do it so they can spec out their character ASAP for pvp or concept.
I've played this game for 5 years and I don't feel like taking my time leveling up characters anymore. Now with IO sets and Uniques, lvl 50 is just a checkpoint in reaching your goal for your character.
Yes it was, but was it this common that it is now?

Before MA even existed I've encountered Regens that didn't know what Integration was despite having it in their tray, a Stone Tank who couldn't get through their mind that Hamidon's damage is unresistable and untyped, another Stone Tank who wouldn't take Rooted because it made them slow (yet had Granite) and didn't take Earth's Embrace, a Empath who had Fortitude but no Clear Mind at level 50, Empaths who skipped their RAs and took the Medicine Pool instead, a Invul Tanker that didn't take Unyielding for mez protection, yet had Acrobatics, a Stalker that didn't know what Hide was, and a Thermal that didn't take it's debuffs. I'm sure this list can go on for a while from several players.
I've played for 4 years, MA doesn't affect me in the slightest because I make use of the sources provided in the game, SGs, Global Channels, Friends. I see no real good reason to leave the game because of MA. I can understand why people left the game because of the PvP Changes in i13, but I don't understand why people leave the game because of MA...I don't accept "I can't find regular teams" as a reason either.
If there's a true problem with MA, it was how it was marketed on the box by not including what CoX has to offer outside of MA.

Was it as common? Nobody can say for sure since it wasn't as open as it is now. There certainly wasn't a lack of players who still didn't know how to play their characters well into the late game before MA.
