What's so fantastic about the rest of the game? And think before you respond (hint: see registration date).
-
This, definitely. And the Auto-SK thing may no longer just be in AE in the future. Think about what impact that will have on the rest of the game. This is by-far one of the biggest contributors to the 'problem' some people see.
-
A lot of vets still haven't 'learned' how to play. I pretty much expect it anymore, but people continue to seemingly focus on the debuff anchors (that is, the target where the toggle debuffs from certain power sets like Dark Miasma are applied). For years, so many people would even flat out refuse Dark Miasma defenders groups, once they figured out one wasn't one of the more common and familiar ones.
They wanted Empathy or Force Field, Kinetics or Radiation Emission. Storm and Dark basically got the shaft. Now, thanks to things like ITF, Dark has become more familiar to people. It took a long time.
Using the excuse that 'people won't learn how to play because they are stuck in AE' is not going to work with those of us who have experienced those people who just wouldn't learn far prior to AE. Many of those are now 40+ month vets. Those who are attentive will learn regardless of whether or not they are doing Architect missions or content. Those who refuse to learn or are just inattentive will probably continue to stumble along as they always have. -
Quote:What's boring in this game is standing around waiting for missions, running multiple zones to get to a mission and then having to run back to your contact, hoping a certain archetype joins your group, or hoping that some group will bother to invite your archetype and power set. AE has fixed a lot of those problems.Because with AE, they gonna level 10 times faster and get bored with game 10 time faster. That's the problem here.
You really think they would not have fun with doing old content? You really think that AE content is only way to have fun?
It's not about do YOU have fun, it's about how long this game survive if developers does make this game fast food game.
This is wrong, never suggest anyone quit because sertain game content. AE should be addional content to players to have fun, it should not affect anyone else ability have fun. This is about balance, old content vs new AE content. AE content should be option as giving something new and interesting for players who has done it all. Now AE content gives so much faster leveling for new players, than why would they even try old content?
New players don't have to suffer through many of the old things we dealt with when the game was younger. You have a rather fixated view on what is the goal in the game, and what isn't. Your (and others') view apparently is that leveling IS the game, that the journey is the goal, so if the journey is shorter then a player will grow bored more easily. Some even complain that there is no 'end game' once you hit 50.
I disagree. Once you hit 50, you have little difficulty getting groups, especially if you want to mess around with lower-level content or friends. This isn't so in many games, but the exemplar system makes it possible in CoX. You can just go have fun without worrying about dying or needing to catch up. My view is that having FUN is the game.
Content is a lot more interesting and easier to pay attention to when you don't have to worry about dying horribly and getting a lot of debt, though it is better than it used to be. Leveling is less fun when it seems like you're getting nowhere fast (more true of the game in the past than now, but still it is tedious). That's where burnout occurs, where tedium and boredom set in. -

I'm going to have to go with Deth here, I was bored of CoH before AE came out. I'd resub every few months for a couple of months, and burn out. I haven't had this problem since AE came out, and have enjoyed the game more for it.

A lot of artists, for whatever reason, cannot accept criticism on any level. Worse still are their fans who seem to be infinitely more rabid when it comes to defending what they like.
[/ QUOTE ]
You're right, but it goes both ways. Some critics cannot accept criticism of their style of criticism, as it were, and they too have their fans who will rush to their defense.
Eco.
[/ QUOTE ]
Maybe so, but at the end of the day, a critique is a personal opinion and doesn't actually NEED defending, unless the critic has done something fundamentally wrong, like not playing/reading/watching said thing they are critiquing.
Additionally, it wasn't a criticism of the style of reviewing, it was more of a criticism of the opinion. It pretty much came down to "You only dislike it because you have no idea what you're talking about.".
That's pretty much setting yourself up to be infallible.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, that was what was going on in the Blight thread: certain known 'critics' from the forums outright missing a lot of content in the arc then drawing their own conclusions from what information they did piece together from parts they didn't ignore, which is kind of ironic given the setting and story.
If it'd been legitimate complaints about the arc, I wouldn't have cared, but I've played it and seen/read the things they obviously did not. And so, several of the 'reviews' were fundamentally flawed.
If some critic wants to complain and criticize an arc, but failed to get a lot of information about it right, he opens himself to criticism and rightly so. Choosing to debate it further by launching more criticism, picking new parts to criticize, and ignoring points just magnifies the terrible review even more. Certain people would be wise to realize that. -
AE Ticket vendor doesn't sell Endurance Recovery DOs either.

It has more to do with the drastically smaller population of players on the servers than it does to do with AE. AE is keeping the game afloat as people can actually find groups due to the mechanics.
[/ QUOTE ]
Except that the server populations AREN'T getting drastically smaller than they were a year ago; right now, they're about the same (and they did spike up for abot a month after the AE went live. Using the 'Find Team' tool, you can get actual logged in numbers from the Blue side (if you're on a Hero) and Red side (when playing a Villian); add them together and you have a total population snashot of your particular server (Sans 'hidden' players).
Don't use the number it shows when you first open it; make sure you have everything set to all (all zones, all levels, etc.); and hit find. The number at the bottom is all players on that 'side' on your server.
I've done it when I've logged in periodically and seen that the pop for Guardian at my peak hours (6PM -9PM PST) runs between 600 - 750 total (both sides); and has stayed constant since I started doing this a little over a year ago. So, at least on my 'home' server not much has changed pop wise in the last year.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, that is how I get this information. Victory is smaller, as is Protector. Also, play periods differ quite a bit between you and I and other players; 7pm PST is very late for me. Populations have consolidated somewhat amongst the servers, and the difference is even greater if you compare two years ago.
New content does attract a lot of players, if it's big or interesting enough: AE, expansion (CoV, for example). However, new content that is flawed in significant ways (AE) tends to have a high turnover rate, dropping populations rapidly back to where they were after the first month or two.
I've played lots of MMOs for quite a long time, and I know the cycle well -

Did you notice the part of my other post that I've highlighted for you? Finding groups IS harder than it used to be. BUILDING groups IS harder than it used to be. You can argue about the reason for this, but it seems pretty obvious it's because the AE has taken people out of the regular game.

It isn't really AE that is at fault here. What has happened is that the game has grown stale, and people have left it. Server populations are down quite a bit from even last year.
AE is what is keeping the game alive at the moment; people are able to find groups there without a huge amount of difficulty that would be the case otherwise. For example, Victory (Hero) is hovering around 150 to 250 people across all zones, while Protector (Villain) has gone as low as 88 during the day.
This is a common complaint throughout the boards, that it was AE that caused the current conditions, not that people are turning to AE because it's hard to get any entertainment waiting around for groups from the such a small and scattered populace - the actual problem.
