I agree with someone who posted in the Comic Forums about this. I keep thinking it's short for "syphilis" or something. Just means that this new SyFy won't show as much Sci-Fi anymore. Be on the lookout for teen dramas, soap operas, and other such crap.

I was watching this today - behold the elaboration of mediocrity and much less 'sci fi' than ever before. Whatevs. Warehouse 13 was fun to watch eve though it was a bit cliched/undercooked.

SyFy

Just when you thought Bonnie Hammer and the idiots running that network couldn't dumb things down even more over there.

*sighs* Something like this has been a long long time coming.

Just like what they did to TechTV.

-sighs-

Although it's not like they've been purely SciFi, plenty of mythos-original movies have been brought.

The first time I saw 'SyFy' I gagged, turned to my husband, and begged him to tell me I hadn't just read that. He glumly assured me that I had, and we mourned the loss of a good channel to whatever 'cutesy' phenomenon makes companies intentionally misspell their products.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to be stubborn and watch my Sci-Fi movies, not this weird 'siffy' crap.

Maybe because SyFy thought it would be a chosen on Hulu.

lol quick reply

Meh. As long as they show Gundam 00 (the first Gundam series I got excited about ever since I discovered subs for Turn A) and the occasional ECW, then the name change isn't too jarring for me.

It's still stupid, though.

Honestly, the Sci-Fi channel had been moved away from being pure Sci-Fi a long time ago. The addition of fantasy, and even more so, so much horror/suspense stuff on it had made it a different channel.

Yeah, its demise, like Tech TV is sad, but honestly, a good show will still be a good show.

*shrugs*

While I watch very little TV these days, what little I did watch was generally on the Sci Fi channel.

The name change, as long as the content doesn't change, is a non-issue.

Should the content drift even further away from the Science Fiction they currently pay a nodding acknowledgement to I'll stop watching even that.

It's like L337 5p34k ... It's the dumbing down of America hard at work. Just like on the internet, everything is intentionally misspelled. They did it to be trendy and to try to get the younger generation (god I sound old!) to watch their channel. Sadly, their choice of proramming is whats making people STOP watching the channel, and no fancy new name is gonna change that.

They changed the name to break away from their sterotype and attract viewers that aren't just nerds. *paraphrased from their own press release*

I've seen this before; an excellent niche-channel catering to a loyal, but small audience, broadens out to increase viewership. Remember The Learning Channel (TLC) of ten or fifteen years ago? That was wonderful; lots of education shows covering a broad spectrum of material from the practical to the abstract; now it's full of junk, but junk that attracts a lot of viewers. Remember ZDTV? There's probably more than a few others who've let the pursuit of ever higher viewership ruin their original vision. Syfy will do the same; the base of viewers who wanted a channel they could depend of to deliver good science fiction (and closely related genres and materials) will be abandoned, and we'll see ever more out-of-genre material crowding out the programing science fiction fans would rather see.

At least, by changing the name, they're being honest about it.

The first anime I was exposed to was on Sci-Fi, and now it's gone :< Forever! :<

This. C'mon now: WRESTLING is remotely Science Fiction? Fiction, sure. Science, nope.

Sci-Fi has been wanting to be USA-2 (or 3) for years. Now they have an excuse.

EDIT--- How many of you remember "a slap on the chest with a wet trout"? THAT was the Sci-Fi channel that I was so excited about when it was first announced.

When ECW (wrestling) debuted on the Sci-Fi channel, the WWE (the corporate company of ECW) agreed to focus more on doing "fantasy" storylines, mainly involving a vampire character named Kevin Thorne.

They even threw in skits where cheesy Sci-Fi characters would get beaten up regularly, then using the platform to promote "high budget" Sci-Fi series like BSG.

However, due to the high ratings it brought in and fan complaints of forcing the "dumbing" down of the product more than it already was, Sci-Fi agreed to dropping the "fantasy" angles as long as they continued to heavily promote their Sci-Fi originals on the other WWE broadcasts, such as Monday Night Raw on the USA network. Regularly you would see stars like Edward James Olmos in the front row where they would then promote BSG on Sci-Fi.

Also, Sci-Fi and USA are owned by the same parent company so there isn't really any reason for competition between the networks. They probably saw that the changes USA made, from its original inception, drew in more viewers by expanding its broadcasts from Monster Truck shows and telephone auctions (yes, USA network was a lot different in the early 80's) to showing major films and creating original programs with known talent.

And Finally...

With the changes to SyFy, they are supposed to be focusing less on the poorly produced shows and poorly produced original movies to focus on more high budget things. This means they will have less original products until they can create a revenue surplus and have to welcome in some other genres to increase the revenue to pay for the costs of the high budget stuff.

Personally, I welcome the change. If they start producting more shows like Warehouse 13, with a good budget, I can see them giving other basic cable channels a run for their money.

And boy isn't that the truth. Some of those original flicks are... horrible. Even Warehouse 13... that wont last past season 1.

Not sure about the veracity, but one of my friends mentioned that "Sci-Fi" can't be trademarked. But SyFy can be. Seems like they want something more marketable.

/dramaticvoice But at what cost?!?

Sci-Fi Channel jumped the shark when they started showing wrestling. This finally admits they don't care about anything but the majority audience.

I can't help reading it as "siffy", too.
