LMAO sounds like a ground breaking piece of research and a must read!
This is directly taken from Myers' paper:
[ QUOTE ]
But, from TwixtÂ’s point of view, droning and other sorts of aggressive teleporting were quite useful to delay or otherwise thwart villain intentions, particularly in cases where the villain contingent out-numbered hero players within the zone. Therefore, Twixt used the teleport-foe tactic whenever necessary and available; and this single tactic was considered his most severe breach of social etiquette.
[/ QUOTE ]
He didn't "Play to win", he played to make other people lose. His justification was: "It's not expressly forbidden in the EULA and TOS."
I'm sorry, Droning, as it used to be, was poor game desgn that couldn't be addressed by the Devs until recently. It's one of the many reasons PVP in CoH/V was, and continues to be, a marginal part of the game.
He's written two other papers on CoH/V this was the one dealing with PVP.

I dunno. When Twixt was on Champion, he did everything you'd expect a player "trying to win" would do. The guy went from station to station eliminating the turrets, etc ... trying to win the zone for heroes. That may have changed when he moved to Freedom, but when I zone PvP'd he usually tried to win.
Other than his seeming autism and poor command of the English language, I never had an issue with Twixt. I loved Twixt-isms ... "Base Is Safe" and "Arean Boy" were a significant part of my vocabulary for a few months.

One thing puzzles me about his actions in RV. He would try to "win the zone" at all costs etc...but i thought it was funny that he would TP not just the neutral parties in the zone, that were not pvping as he describes in his papers, but also the PvPers who were in fact playing the zone as intended. Trying to defeat either good or evil.
I have gotten tped by him a few times during my tenure with HVND I never got me killed or anything (at least not repeatedly, i'm sure he has a log if he did), but it doesn't seem to correlate with his study because myself and others were pvping the opposite faction.

Its on a blog, no university is referenced, no paper has been published, there has been no peer review.
Im curious to see what his angle is.
I dont think we will see a paper published, the research methods are atrocious, and i would think a paper of this type would be professionally embarassing.
But then again, maybe this type of research is the norm in this kind of field lol

He may have copied chatlogs with your unchanged user name on it. You might want to check. I think this might be a EULA violation, since the names might be those of minors and there was no way for him to know.
(As for "15 minutes of fame for reporting an ethics violation"....uh, check your local Barnes and Noble, m'kay? Or Amazon. "Mercedes Lackey" This isn't even a blip on my radar.)

I also noticed an amazingly obvious typo in the heading of a section. That's kind of sad.

Digra. hehe
The APA and DIGRA are really not on the same academic plane. I don't the prof is going to be in trouble for presenting that essay - and he makes it pretty clear on page one that its an essay not a controlled experiment of any kind. That wouldn't have been looked at twice in any kind of meaningful research journal.
I sadly haven't read the newspaper article (nola.com is banned @ work), but I think the prof isn't in nearly the trouble folks were alluding to earlier.

I think its interesting, accurate and thought provoking. Much like life in CoH you either go thru
1. attempting to please others,
2. attempting to displease others
3. lead others
4. be lead by others
5. be anarchic
6. or attempt to bring people together.
Twixt's play though by the letter of the in game rules was not without fault. Having made several statements that he 'just played' is not correct. Those that came to revile Twixt did so because he goaded them. Posting his defeat logs. Spamming insults in broadcast. and more. I believe his study lacks the empirical merit and proper controls required to form the conclusive pothesis "If you don't play by the unwritten rules you become an outcast".
As many know performing a function to the letter of a specified parameter is not necessarily noteworthy. What was noteworthy about Twixt, and how the good professor portrayed him as a manic martyr, was he made no effort to justify his actions for the betterment of the community. The study is just a reinforcement of what has been long known to those with a shred of common sense....people, real or virtual, do not like what they do not understand.
LoL he took a sabattical and a stipend to play CoH to figure out what my big brother tought me at 6 years old. Hopefully on his next paper he can find a conclusive reason why developers wont return pvp back to the way it was. It can be titled, 'Biting the hand that feeds you'
