Twixt's real story. Will BLOW YOUR MIND.

The biggest problem is that people applied 'mob' rules to the zones. In the zones, some people will play for rep while others will play for the player vs. player combat while others still will 'grief'.
Twixt's entire strategy was overcome by two simple inspirations:
Sturdy
BReak Free
If you eat a Sturdy you can't be TP Foed.
If you eat a Break Free you can escape Touch of Fear.
Now, he DID use Heavies and mobs as well...and did taunt using Broadcast (which you can shut off).
There is a player similar to Twixt on Pinnacle called XFunk. He plays a Brute and will literally hunt anyone and everyone in the zone...people genuinely despise him. Of course, he *will* fight you as well...so I can see the differences between Twixt and Funk.
All in all, this wasn't much of an experiment...people will always apply their own societal/personal/cultural rules in areas where they don't know social strictures. There aren't any social stricutures in PvP zones...this is what upsets people.
You can come to a general agreement though, I suppose on what's fair or not.
I won't be buying the book but you cannot deny Twixt made quite a name for himself in the zones.

I disagree
We has the most hated person in PvP on Freedom.
Funny how he thinks he was the most hated in the *game*
1. The research is fundamentally worthless and that should be pointed out to his review committee at loyola
a. He did no form of control group whatsoever
b. There were no parameters established for any kind of experimental protocol
c. This "stranger aggravation" experiment has been done ever since the 50s under properly controlled situations. He didn't replicate established research, and he proved nothing new.
2. In fact, and what should also be pointed out to his review committee at Loyola, what he has done has been to foul the water for anyone wanting to do serious research on sociological parameters inside mmorpgs
3. And, perhaps most importantly, he violated the number one protocol for anyone engaged in such studies, and probably violated Loyola's own ethics standards. He did not reveal that he was doing studies nor did he get the consent of those he was studying. this should be reported to the Loyola ethics committee
<b>4. As to the players he griefed, now that he has outed himself, they can actually complain to the university and even threaten to sue for being used in a research study without their knowledge or consent.</b>
In short, a nerd professor discovered how to be a bully of the sort that used to give him wedgies, proceeded to do so and is now crowing about it and pretending it was research, while violating every standard for such research there is.
He ought to be fired
EDIT: If he did NOT get the permission of the owners of CoX to do this study, it is a EULA violation and
Under the terms of the EULA the owners of CoX could claim all or a substantial portion of the profits from this book, or suppress it altogether.

Its been fun to watch the answer appear after so many years. Can any one remember the question? Whats going to happen because of this Read about 5 post down and you'll see why I applaud twixt. He did what I wanted to.
You guys need to get over it. Half of you don't know what you're mad about just that someone said something bad about the game or something *twirl hair* Its not about the game or your community. Its things we need to look at.

My current draft of my Letter to the Editor.
Note: Unfortunately, according to their editorial desk, this letter is FAR too long. The woman I spoke with recommended 200-250 words, and this is 542 words. That's just not gonna cut it. So, give me tips on what I should pare down that won't rob the letter of the point it is trying to make, which is basically that our community is almost entirely good while Twixt was simply being dishonest about the validity of his findings. The author of the original article (who I spoke with yesterday) encouraged that I play up the good stuff the community does. I also have to avoid any "gamer terms" to allow maximum understanding. So, here's it so far:

Re: City of Heroes character Twixt becomes games most hated outcast courtesy of Loyola professor , Local News, July 6.
Having been a regular player and Official Forum poster for the past four years, I would consider myself a decent judge of our City of Heroes online community.
I was therefore shocked when I read the Times-Picayunes story about David Myers study of our community. Myers himself actually posted a link on the CoH forums to his paper last year. The shock came from the fact that Myers was not only turning his paper into a book, but that he was being featured in an article that did not properly research what Myers wrote about.
Our community includes a player-founded taxi service of experienced players who shuttle new players around. We have our own player-founded emergency medical technicians who dedicate their time to helping heal and assist hurt players. Our forums include well-wishes for players who have new babies, get married, or go off to war. We have sponsored charities, conventions, meet-and-greets, and have even had a few weddings. Somehow, none of these things made it into Myers paper.
Myers presented the extreme negatives of our community as the standard. Myers leaves out that he verbally attacked, insulted, harassed, stalked, and goaded many more individuals than he noted. Some of his verbal attacks are still present on our forums. He did more than just use a loophole in the rules, he specifically went out of his way to insult and harass as many players as he possibly could.

I'm certainly no expert....but perhaps something like this? This was one of the more difficult shaving jobs I've done...this was very well written.
Well ladies and germs. No matter what you think of the tactics, or the game, there is one thing that is absolutely not in question. Professor David Myers, aka Twixt, violated his own field's and university's code of ethics.
3.10 Informed Consent
(a) When psychologists conduct research or provide assessment, therapy, counseling, or consulting services in person or via electronic transmission or other forms of communication, they obtain the informed consent of the individual or individuals using language that is reasonably understandable to that person or persons except when conducting such activities without consent is mandated by law or governmental regulation or as otherwise provided in this Ethics Code. (See also Standards 8.02, Informed Consent to Research; 9.03, Informed Consent in Assessments; and 10.01, Informed Consent to Therapy.)
Were any of you offered informed consent? No. This is, and should be, taken seriously. Codes of Ethics are in place to protect people from being exploited by the unethical
Should you wish to report this Ethics violation the email address of the Dean of the school to which Professor David Myers belongs is:

Unfortunately, just because something is legal in-game doesn't make it right. Goes back to the 45 MPH in the fast lane idea. Nobody's disputing that what he did was actually within the rules of the game, initially. There may be other issues, like the fact that he performed research without the consent of his subjects or that he may profit from this research without the consent of his subjects or City of Heroes, but no one is disputing that the things he did were within the letter of the law in the game. Just because they're within the law doesn't mean they're the correct thing to do, and it doesn't make his research any less skewed.
Just because one has the ABILITY to do something doesn't mean it should be done. Most importantly, just because one has the ability to do something doesn't mean they should be surprised/shocked when other people won't agree with the law. Twixt's research has nothing to do with the fact that what he did was within the restrictions of the game. It has everything to do with the fact that he misrepresented the community's actual reaction to his playstyle by not playing an observer role and by specifically encouraging the reactions he claims to have received unexpectedly while also only reporting on a portion of the data he collected, not the entire dataset gained during the research. This misrepresentation is not appropriate.

It's a penguin thing. Pingu FTW.
Consent forms? Yeah right. I forget the name of it, but there is a general rule in doing studies of any sort that your research will not come out genuine if your observation affects the thing you are researching. So what was he supposed to do, ask people if he could grief them in PvP to guage their reactions? That would ruin the study completely.
Now, to be fair, the study and article were both unprofessional for a lot of the reasons that people have already listed.
He could have asked the Dev to post an anonymous general message indicating that a study would be done on the PVP community and that by entering the PVP zone you would be "accepting" to be part of the study.
This would have done 2 things:
1- informed COH dev that he wants to do a study ( which they can then accept or deny)
2- people can't come back and say they were part of a study that they weren't aware of.
Wow, the cool kids haven't grown up yet and still get mad over [censored].
Actually, he doesn't really have to get consent to perform an Observational Study. However in an Observational Study he doesn't interact. This isn't Observational. This is Direct interaction from which he should have needed consent to perform.
He also shouldn't be posting people's Character names without their consent in his paper. If he didn't change the names to something else, he's probably in some sort of privacy violation rule. Regardless if everyone in the public knows of that toon or not, NCSoft does know who is who and what toon belongs to who.
I'm not upset by this as I never had to deal with this quack, however I think people who were in the paper have a right to be upset, and those he griefed have a right to be upset.
Whether they choose to act on it to the dean of this guys school on the other hand is completely up to them.
I don't understand... Did the guy play on champion?
And of course he was getting death tells, he was PvPing for Christ's sake.
Yes, he played on Champion.
As for the consent issue, it's debatable. No matter what, it seems CoH would have to have given him consent to perform the research, as they are officially owners of everything in the game, including our characters. Using their property for research or profit should require their consent, so it seems like they could just quash the entire situation with a giant legal thumb (and for all we know, they may be preparing to do such a thing).

How's this for research?
"Hmmm... looks like a turd. Smells like a turd. Feels and sounds like a turd. Even ACTS like a turd... OMG!!! IT'S A TURD!!!"
He breaks the rules set by a society and is amazed when the society in question responds the same way any society would respond? I couldn't care less about PvP in general, and this guy sounds like a low-grade moron with an inferiority complex and far too many letters after his name.
Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas
Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.
