I just tried to make a new character to team up with a new character of my fiances and in short I couldn't find an available name. Literally.

We just spent more then an hour looking for names and logged off out of shear annoyance.

At some point something is going to need to be done to free up some names and doubly so if we want new people to be able to come to the game because the situation as it stands is absurd.

Sure, it's easy to get a name. . .if you want just anything. But if you're like me and you want a real comic book sounding name, you're usually SOL for anything good. Especially on Virtue and Freedom. None of what you list as examples are appealing to me in the least, i'd never resort to those sort of names. I want names I could potentially see for sale at my local comic shop, and generally those sort of names are long gone.

It really isn't that hard to find a name.
It usually takes me less than 3 times.
I haven't made a character for about 2 months now, but often times I have tried a name that I was sure would have been taken and I get them.

If the character is unique to you, find out what makes them unique and start from there. The basic concept should give some good options. A color related to your costume is a good adjective to add before the name. For personal names, add a middle initial or suffix. There is also the tactic of not placing spaces between two or more words :: "LikeThis".

I suggest avoiding the "clan" coding stuff like "vVNameVv". It really doesn't have a place in this game. There was a time when that was great to show that a character was part of a certain group, but we have an option to display a characters SG above their name. It really isn't supposed to be part of their name.

If you are on Virtue or Freedom, possibly the way to get the names you want is to try on other servers. There are probably more characters on the lists for Virtue and Freedom than an of the other servers - the names are taken individually per server, so it may very well be that some of the names you were trying were/are available on other servers.

Honestly, people can play and get teams on other servers. I know, I game on all of them.

-------

I jumped into check out this thread because I thought it was about the really bad names that are showing up in the game.

I think that Age of Conan has the right idea about restricting names to "names".

A good example of what I'm talking about is a character that I ran into last night called "LFT".
Now I guess to some that is kind of funny, but I think it is pretty pathetic.

"Look! Up in the sky!"
"Is it a bird?"
"A plane?"
"No! It's LFT!"

Yeah, right....

What do you considered a Comic Book name?

Firestrike?
Incredible Iceberg?

Both names are heroes of mine, and I play on freedom.

It's good to look at foreign translations of words related to what you're looking for. Some of them sound even cooler as a name than their English counterpart like Papillion sounds better than Butterfly for a name, or use the germanic "Uber" as opposed to "Super".

Changing a few letters in a word so that it's different but would sound out the same way is a good option, too, like Fyre instead of Fire.

What is a "real" comic book sounding name?

Really? I think all my ladies have Comicbook super hero names...
And I have never had to "try again" when picking a name.

Then too I have seen some really DUMB names in Comic books

And seriously, who names a character after a bat? What's he got, giant ears or something? Likes to crawl in small corners and squeak? Or maybe he spreads rabies to suburban residential areas.

It's the character that makes the name more often than the name making the character.

I would like to point something out, from another thread.

[ QUOTE ]
It was cute to watch them attempt to pick a name. The sequence went a little something like this:

Sister Flame: Okay. What name do you want?

Princess S: Rose.

Sister Flame: *slowly types the name in* Taken. Try again.

Princess S: Rosie.

Sister Flame: *more slow typing* Taken. Try again.

Princes S: Lady Rose.

Sister Flame: *types, hits enters and snickers* Taken. Boy, people love the name Rose. Try something different.

Princess S: *thinks for a minute* Rose Lady?

Like I said, this went on for just a few minutes, but it was a hoot to watch and I was very proud that neither of my daughters got frustrated.

Once they had made it past the name hurdle, Sister Flame fixed up her sister's power bar, chose all her vet rewards and temp powers and then turned the laptop over to her. They only played for about fifteen minutes, but it was a great thing to watch. Princess S decided to go swimming in the "big pool" in Atlas Park, so Sister Flame gave her directions on where to go. They ran into some Hellions, but Flame told her sister to just mash the 1-2-3-4 keys until they were defeated.

[/ QUOTE ]

If an 8 year old and her 5 year old sister can come up with a new name they like, without coming here to raise a fuss or deciding that the game's not worth playing because they didn't get the first one (or five) they tried, the rest of us should take note and grow... young.

Patience and creativity. That's all that it really requires.

Try Superman.

Or Wolverine.

Or better yet...Iron Man.

I'm pretty sure that you'll get those names...for about five minutes.

I know it's against the law to talk about CO ideas that are actually good and apply them to CoH, but CO allows any player to take any name, with only global names being unique. That means there can be 500 "superdudes" running around, but of course they all have different global names.

That's really not a bad idea. There would be a lot less people running around with unnecessary periods, hyphens, l337, and substituting similar looking letters and numbers to get the names they want.

I'd wager it would cause A LOT less confusion than someone will undoubtedly come in here and claim.

And yes, I have read the numerous posts explaining the many different tools for coming up with a name, but... who cares? If Jim wants to be "Gothic Knight" then screw it! We're all tied to unique global accounts anyway.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with this post. Let us be who we want. Sometimes I do the same as the OP and make a character, can't find a suitable name and then procede to rage quit. Let us pick any name and tie them to our global accounts.

Apparently I got Sonnenblume correct, because a while back someone asked me if I was German.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yep, you got it correct. Sonnenblume means Sunflower, singular. Sonnenblumen means Sunflowers, plural.

As for the topic, I understand the lure of coming back to the game and not having lost your characters or names, but after a few years yeah... sorry. I think those people should not be able to name-camp until the end of time.

Nice!

I can get superheroey names if I want to take the time 5-10 minutes maybe) to work past all the identical "great" ideas that apparently weren't all that original anyways. My most recent score was Psychique for my new baby dom on Triumph.

Spread across the servers (and of varying ages, some probably at least 4 years old, but some more recent) - Fireblaze, Maiden Frost & Frost Maid (one is the evil twin), Arctic Ice, Dr. Neutrino, Wynter Hazard, Darkefire, and TechnoValkyrie. And those are the most superheroey or supervillany names, I have a good 30+ others that I like that may not "qualify" as "super".

Well, my newest creation, a Warshade called Black Smilodon was named as such because he belongs to a Cat-themed Triumph SG, so sometimes, you truly need a name to match a theme, still... creativity and imagination are key!

I believe that a Kheldian Gold Standard should be based on SO's, and for anything above that... there's Platinum!
