"Toccata and Fugue" sounds more like a team of a /Sonic Defender and an Illusion/ Controller...

I don't create silly-named characters but I thought this one up earlier today... Anyone who wants it can have it.

The Cookie Mobster

I picture a blue-furred creature wearing a lavander suit and sporting a fedora. Too bad they don't have googly eyes as a costume choice.

Did someone say Googly eyes???

Ironic you used Tabula Rasa as a name possibility in a NCSoft game.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's a good name, and suits the character concept.

If someone has their mind wiped, they begin again with a blank slate or a clean slate.

Tabula Rasa is Latin for blank slate.

New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

I know, I was just commenting that it was also an NCSoft game and i found it ironic you mentioned it.

And I have to agree 100% with Zek's list, about half of those I generally use myself before I find a name I like... and to reemphasize it, I'm gonna just freaking quote his list just for the hell of it:[ QUOTE ]

Foreign Dictionary.

Imagination.
Multiple Words.
Hyphens.
Roman Numerals.
Imagination.
Random Generators.

[/ QUOTE ]Basically, all the stuff in bold are my bread and butter for coming up with a character. A lot of my names come partly/fully from foriegn languages (mostly Japanese, with a little latin for good measure).

It's not hard to find good names that are available... It just takes a little effort.

[/ QUOTE ]
I've gotten a lot of use out of Russian names for characters, in part because of the opportunity for more exotic backgrounds, and in part because it's fun to build Cyrillic chat binds to give some additional characterization. Some of the characters I've created using Russian for names:

Yadernii Ogon -- "Nuclear Fire" (Fire/Rad Controller)
Stal'naya Deva -- "Steel Maiden" (DB/WP Scrapper)
Ledyanoy Kulak -- "Ice Fist" (Ice/EM Tanker)
Ogon Moroza -- "Frostfire" (Fire/Ice Blaster)
Tenevoy Krik -- "Shadow Scream" (Dark/Sonic Defender)
Tenevoy Ogon -- "Shadow Fire" (Fire/Dark Corruptor)

Now, I concede that, with five years of play gone by, most of the 'simple' names have been taken, but the expenditure of a little creativity will expand your choices into a much bigger pool of possible names.

I'm going to guess that this particular name was blocked, not taken.

I know I would have petitioned it if I had seen it in-game. Pretty juvenile, IMHO.

[/ QUOTE ]

Apparently sarcasm is not your forte. The punchline of the story is how *short* my latest attempt to play blue side was. Of course I knew the name was not available but it was just an afterthought considering I wasn't serious about playing heroes in the first place. *rolls eyes*

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh, so sorry I didn't realize you were trying to make some "blueside sux" point in a thread discussing name availability.

Was that sarcasm enough?

The problem with that Daemodand is that not everyone wants the whole world to know their global.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, so to hide your global you never type in chat?

You do know that anyone can right-click your characters name in the chat box and select "get Global name" now don't you?

Yes some of us know that, but as I pointed out earlier not every player does. Most of us here in the forums do. But then, most of us here in the forums also dont' want spammers to easily find us, as we're the ones most likely to complain about spam emails.

We have a whole thread full of names people post up that are free, or offer up when they delete...Virtue Name Watch, its even a sticky. Just grabbed Brass Butterfly from there last night in fact.

I am a proponent of freeing up all names on accounts pre I5 or 6, whenever it was they added in globals, though. Seriously, if you have never logged in since they implemented that, you aren't even going to remember what names you had...

[/ QUOTE ]

That reminds me...Butterfly-Girl, a name I got a few weeks ago (maybe a month?)...my BS/INV scrapper.

I was all "O.O OMG! I can't believe it!" when I got the name. Oh how I love that name.

Like I said, before, just keep trying.

I make a lot of alts. I've never had problems finding a workable name. Names of characters I've created in just the last 2-3 months:

On Virtue: Rouge Spy (deliberately spelled Rouge), Dog Is My Copilot, Valkyrie of Atlantis, Rocker Girl, Maid of Steam

On Liberty: Wilhelm Scream, Rocker Girl (later remade on Virtue), Machine Spirit

On Justice: Dark Candy

On Victory: Darkcandy (remake of above, but Dark Candy was taken ) Rocket Wolf, Tillie the Troll, Candy Ice

On Pinnacle: Aquamarine Assassin

Some of my favorite names are taken from songs that I like: Mouse Police, Terra Nova Cain, Serpentine Fire, etc. None More Black was also inspired from a line in the Spinal Tap movie, and by one of the main characters of the movie in general.

ALSO: The Virtue forum has a very very long thread with name suggestions, all available on Virtue at the time they were posted. Even if you don't play on Virtue, it's worth browsing through if you're looking for ideas or inspiration for a name.

This.

If I'm in a global channel with someone, they can know me there. But there's a distinction between character and person, and I'd like to keep it that way.

[/ QUOTE ]

Anyone who knows your toon name has access to your global name. /get_global_name is available by just knowing someones toon name. I guess I'm not seeing how there's a distinction.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most people still don't know that you can do that. Yes, it's commonly known here in the forums, but frankly I don't need j random SPAMMER seeing my global under my toon's name, either. Make it at least half a minute more difficult for them to get it, thanks.

[/ QUOTE ]
Also, when someone switches toons, even though I know it's the same player, when I see a different toon and a different name, it feels like a different character has joined us. Like Mondo Man called up Wonder Weasel and told him there was a team that could use his help more than they could use Mondo Man's. Some of that would be lost if the same global was hanging over their heads.

I have found some good names using different mythologies. Need a name for an electric blaster? How about the storm god from the Polynesian pantheon? Others I take forever to get a decent name. I had an Ice/Ice blaster I just didn't play much because his name sucked (It was so bad I can't even remember what it was. ) I finally gave him the name Chilly Death and he is fun to play. Now I am resisting the temptation to create a Fire/Fire blaster with the name Chili Death.

Now, if I could get a toon to look like a fish, I might be tempted to name it Habanero Sushi.

Reminds me of Impossible Creatures. It would be so fun to be able to make stuff like that. Or what were those figures back in the 80s Humanoid animals in tech armor...grrr I can't remember and I used to collect them.

Battle Beasts!!! Thats what they were.

I've got almost all the set of Battle Beasts. Of course their little heat-sensitive chest plates don't work any more since they've been in storage like 20 years, but hey. They were adorable.

Oooh, should we ever get a nicer fox-looking head and tail, I will be making the little white-armored fox. That was my favorite.

While I was in the military, my family was having some issues and all of mine and my siblings childhood keepsakes were lost. Including a bear I'd had since I was two years old.

I don't know the specifics something about a flood or bad storage or something. So much happened while I was gone, they didn't take care of my cat, let her go wild and she ended up ran over...

There's some things that should never be lost and I'm still a bit miffed that I couldn't control the situation.

At least you were able to hold on to some of those nifty collectibles.

All too many of them, actually.... waaaaay too many. That's a shame about both your cat and your stuff. I still have stuff of mine from childhood, and while I certainly neither need nor want to really have it around me, I often just can't think of not having it.

I should donate some of my stuffed toys to kids that need em.

She was a calico. A lot like the one I have now. I wanted a cat and found out someone found an itty bitty kitty that wasn't even weened yet abandoned. I was maybe 12 or 13, so I asked my mom to go get it while I was at school. I remember running home after school to meet her. When I got home my mom was busy feeding her baby food in this big box so she had a way to clean her paws off cuz she was basically bathing in the baby food. She was so itty bitty... barely the size of my palm. she turned out to be psychotic though....but aren't all calicos.

Just be careful with Russian words as names, as a lot of people tend to speak the language and inaccuracies tend to show. Your names here are quite good, to the best of my grasp of the Russian language (though Ogon Moroza is more "Frost's Fire," as in fire that belongs to the frost), but I've seen quite a few people use Bablefish to come up with names and even chat binds that don't actually make a lot of sense Even saw a poster for a SG once that had several sentences which had absolutely no meaning in Russian, though I could sort of infer their meaning by translating them into English word-for-word and parsing the English sentence.

Generally, I've found that the best way to find foreign names and make foreign binds is to actually ask someone who speaks the language to make or translate them for you. I'd offer my services, but my command of the Russian language is limited. I can give you Bulgarian names and chat binds, though, and written the two languages look so completely indistinguishable no-one who doesn't speak Russian will ever be the wiser

And I'm pretty confident I'm the only one who speaks Bulgarian here.

*edit*
Forgot to mention, it's often really cool to borrow name names from other languages, provided you can spell it in English. Some slav names, in particular, are really cool if you like to be different. I specifically like Czech names or Gruzinian names, as they have very specific sounds and structure, but Serbian and Macedonian will usually do. It's cute, because these names are usually trivial to spell in their native languages' alphabet, but require lateral thinking in English. I used to have a character called "Yaroslav Brejnich," for instance, but the concept itself wasn't interesting enough, so I scrapped him. I still like the name, though

Apparently I got Sonnenblume correct, because a while back someone asked me if I was German. I admitted that I'm not, and just used Babelfish to come up with her name.
