This Life is rated R for "R"eal

There is this entire threads about how this game is rated T, or the like. When I read some posts in there, I really want to get something off my chest.

Last Saturday I received an email about a friend of mine. She's been missing since April, and we didn't know where she went. It turned out that she had killed herself.

What happened? She's transsexual. A lot of people think transsexuals are dirty and immoral. So they taunted her, flashed her dirty looks, refused her jobs, banged on her windows.

We used to go out. I tried to con her into playing CoX. But she became depressed. She didn't dare to go out, didn't dare to raise her head when she did, and didn't dare to speak because people would hear her male voice.

She was so depressed she went to hospital. They put her in the male ward of the hospital where she was r***d because for some guys it doesn't matter as long as someone looks roughly female and has a hole. The nurse said, if she got r***d, it was her own fault anyway.

After she got out of the hospital which was supposed to help her, she killed herself.

She was 28 years old, liked manga and cats, dreamt of going to med school. She was the only child of a a single mother. Her mother had a stroke from the strain of dealing with all the hate and is now wheelchair bound.

There are people who have attitudes so strong they complain about some silly game mechanic to change the way electronic gremlins look on the screen... they say "a cross-dresser", "a guy in a skirt", like it is some abstract creature that pops out of nowhere.

No, there are no abstract creatures. There are human beings though.

I have this hope that people with those attitudes and made those posts would think about this, and change their attitudes. But I know this is a vain hope. People don't change, attitudes don't change.

In the end, "R"eal life continues, and "R"eal people continue to die.

Jeez.

And that's why I wish that the community we have here, able and willing to chime in about how much they stand together on an issue such as this, could be there for people like your friend. It's miserable and pathetic that people still treat others like that.

Having both a friend and a cousin who are transgendered I really hope stories like this soon become a thing of the past.

I'm sorry for your loss

I hear so many stories like this that I'm becoming more and more cynical at the notion that people are basically good.

Really... I just don't understand the amount of hate and vitrol that some people harbor. Sometimes it seems like a majority.

I'm so sorry for her tragedy. It was everyone else that was sick, not her.

It's a horrible thing, the way some people are able to dehumanize those who are different from them.

Thanks for the dose of perspective, and I'm so sorry.

I gave up the idea of people being basically good a long time ago....

In my book, 'people' as a whole are a bunch of ******s. Any individual person you meet may or may not be, but as a whole, people really do suck.

Yes, because I really needed to be even more depressed today.

I'm sorry for your loss, but not everyone here is emotionally stable either. Now I have to spend the next three days unable to think about anything else, and being unable to sleep. Why the [censored] is this here?

I say this as a [censored] victim and generally someone who has been through a lot of really horrible [censored] myself.

A lot of people seem to be causing a lot of their own dislike of this story, but dont seem to understand why. First, it is my impression that it is because of the above linked topic, and also because of another topic similar to it that was erased. You see, we live in a forum world where even the bigots and intolerant people can come. And while some of you here may not be emotionally stable to discuss things such as r@pe, some times we need to discuss it in order to overcome it and to heal from situations such as this.

We need to talk about these experiences and learn from them, and so for those of you, like Aisynia, who were upset by this topic, I formally apologize for anyone. However, we have to talk about these things in order to stop them. Transgender/transexual hate and discrimination is the next thing that will be fought for after gay marriage/adoption is squared away. Mark my words. GLBT rights groups are dealing with these issues more than ever now.

I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry it had to come to that. I hope that some day we will be able to break free from all of this hate and learn to just coexist. We dont have to get along, but we DO need to destroy this hetero-normative view on society and life.

As a victim, I can tell you how true that is... but you do it at a psychologists office, not a [censored] game forum.

On a game forum...?

All these posts should be locked, they don't have a place here. I come to the game to ESCAPE the real world.

Gaming communities are very commonly the places transgendered people come to escape from real life as well. Being able to easily assume an identity that they feel fits them better and socialize as that identity is often an important part of the prescribed therapy in such a situation. Making sure our community is accepting of such people, and making them feel welcome rather than guilty of who they are and what they are doing should be a priority for everyone here.

The OP posted this in response to some of the strong sentiment on the boards that has been quite hostile towards the transgendered lifestyle. I don't believe their intent was shock or horror, but rather to show the consequences of a society not being accepting, and to show that very real people are hurt by such sentiment.

Your right, there needs to be a discussion. However, the forums of a game are not the correct place for this kind of discussion.

My heart goes out to Freem and his friend's family and friends as well as Aisynia.

Although I understand why Aisynia found this post very disturbing I hope that she also understands why Freem felt the need to make this post, and understands that this post was not written with intention of bringing up painful memories. This post was rather written in the hopes that people would recognize that intolerance has consequences for real people. I am truly sorry that this post rang so close to home for you, but it seems to me that Freem found earlier posts extremely painful and felt unable to sit on the sidelines when the stakes can be so high.

Although Freem's experience does not highlight the best in the humanity, I think it's important to remember that all over there are people working actively to create change. People whose lives are not directly affected, like Freem, but care passionately about standing up for the rights of family, friends, loved ones, and complete strangers.
