How to solve the Purple Problem
Its people like you that keep me in business! KEEP IT COMING!
... why?
This thread is a good example of why keyboards should be equipped with an ignition interlock device.
boughten: the past past tense of to buy.
I wouldn't have brought it up but your idea is mildly insane there's always going to be a market for purples no matter the price because the limit on inf is so enormous as well as the ability to earn inf. It will however level off shy of the inf cap. probably more likely around half that. You intend to fix the problem by...being the problem. perhaps you should come up with a plan B.

Im LMAO!!! I have been quietly doing this since for a long time. I am prob sitting on 15-20 purples red side on my major marketer that i bought on the dirt cheap or had dropped on me and just sat on them. I was releasing them slowly into the market and each time increasing my sale price by 20-25 million. they would sit for a while but they sell. I just sold my first 200 million purple over the weekend.
The funny thing is... is that the toon that has them all is only SO'd out.. not purples and no IO's to speak of.
So many fast ITF's and opportunistic buying (even noa you can find them) has provided this opportunity.
More Influence in the System = Rising Prices
Working as intended. No chance of increasing the drop rate.

Market PVP everyone back to the stoneage. I just sold my Armagedon dam/rech/acc for 180 mill. You better believe the next substantial purple i get (i have an arch/fire so im getting em) is going for 200 mill.

Yeah, I'm sitting on a set of Armageddons that I haven't slotted yet, bought for around 45M a piece a couple of months ago (am waiting on the next freespec to unslot my Posi set), and I'm sorta tempted to just sell them. It's not like they're *that* much better than Posi's, at least for that particular build. Then again, it's not like I need the cash...
All in all, I'm glad I don't focus on purple sets for most of my builds. My uber, GM-soloing builds do fine w/o a single purp.
An Offensive Guide to Ice Melee
I've been sorta doing that with irons for a while now; buy them all up from anywhere of 10-50k and reslisting for half a mil. You wait a long while and they sell in between gaps when some market hero floods it with cheap ones. but hell, they run out sometime.
I use "boughten", but not as the general past participle for "bought"; for me it is a separate adjective, the opposite of "homemade" or "homespun".
I've never bought a purple; the few that I have and use were all drops that dropped for me and directed to the character best able to make use of them. So none of them are boughten, all are homemade.
Likewise I had never sold one until today - an Unbreakable Constraint that couldn't be equipped by any level 50 character I still play regularly.

Not sure what the Purple Problem is, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but: keep up your ebil marketeering ways, you crazy cats. Never bought a single purple, never intend to, and the higher you jack the prices, the more I can sell my few drops for. Then I can IO out the characters I want with regular sets, give the rest to alts and SG mates, and continue to ignore market PvP and the insane price of common salvage

You know, I think I've figured out why I can't make the big bucks on the market. I see a possible niche, but think "no, people can't be that silly" and don't act on it. Then I see stuff like this...
I guess people really are that silly.
Here I was kicking myself for getting impatient and upping my bids to a bit above avrage price on three Positron's Blast sets after only a few days so I'd have them crafted within a week... and people are willing to pay half a million for a freaking common that they can pick up for 10k overnight even during a shortage? Sheesh!
(Oh, and I wouldn't so much call them "market heroes" as I would "people who don't want to waste a market slot on a stupid common so they sell low". I know on an active toon I certainly aren't going to clog slots trying to squeeze every last inf out of common drops when I'm going to be selling dozens more in two hours. )

This.
Across all 14 (?) of my 50s I have less than 10 purple sets slotted...and 2 or 3 purple procs. I'm only interested in selling them.
Repeat Offenders teams and 3-boxing "solo" have made me very blah about slotting purples.
Repeat Offenders
I sold my last 2 purples for 200M+ last week.
I don't find the set bonuses for purples to be very good bang for the buck, I can generally be more creative and get better returns for a fraction of 200M for build total let alone a set of purples.

A single set of purples doesnt do much just as 1 LoTG rech proc doesnt really give you a lot of return by itself but if you slot a few powers with a few sets of purples then it really starts to add up.
Over all my IOd toons on live, both heroes and villains, I have about 35 sets slotted with a minimum of 5 per power. I aim for a lot of +rech which purples offer a lot of as the 5th bonus. The extra recovery offered by a few are nice too. I dont have a problem with them being expensive either. It makes a finished build seem like more of an accomplishment when you know it isnt something you can just throw together at will unless you earned the inf and took the time to aquire them all which can sometimes take a little while itself
Hecatomb set for just under 1.3B over the last week.
Sold sometime since last week, when I put 'em up.
Guessing one came down to being the last one, as it sold for 300M.
So .. what purple problem? Sell.

This is true, although just slotting lots of non-purple sets adds up too. What's interesting to me is to take a build that already has good set bonuses through non-purple sets, and look at the difference adding a purple set or two makes by using Mids Hero Designer. For example, on my Archery blaster, if I change slotting in a power to go from 6.25% recharge bonus to 10% via a purple set, I shave 0.2 seconds off the recharge of Rain of Arrows, my cornerstone power. Not worth it to me.
It has been occasionally worth it. I have 2 characters that have 8 purple sets between them. But looking at the actual recharge values in Mids has cooled my jets more than a few times. I ask myself, "do I really want to spend hundreds of millions so power X can recharge 3 seconds faster?" And the answer is almost always no.

Still not entirely sure what "the Purple problem" is. If its that they're too expensive, well, there's not thing that the players can really do about that. Supply, demand, and scarcity.
If it's that the drop rate is too low to begin with, well, nothing players can do about that directly either. We can try to tell the devs that the drop rates are too low, but the devs have been pretty clear that purples are going to stay ultra-rare. "Vision" and all that, I suppose. Funny how even after all this time, that word as relates to the devs still makes me cringe.
Simply put, there is no way to prove objectively that the drop rate is too low. Without that kind of proof, it's unlikely that the devs will revisit drop rates anytime soon, and without the revisiting of the drop rates, purple prices won't come down. Not entirely sure what the problem is. It sucks for people who want to try to earn purples without using the market, but at this time, that is the way things are and it is not likely to change anytime soon.
The devs can't make you use the market, but they can make sure that if you don't, you fall behind those that do.

My blaster is the one I've made it a hobby to see how far he can get tricked out with IOs. I got a lot of set bonuses from regular IOs, and I started adding in some purples to the powers that don't have any sets yet. For me, the goal of the purples is that I wanted to get a bit of regen, recovery, accuracy, and recharge for those times when I exemp down to run some of the low-level content.
I don't see much of a "purple problem" either. They're supposed to be ultra rare. If they were common enough that everybody can just get them at will, it would be the base standard, and then people would be crying for new sets that surpass them.
