No, thats old news, 'we' (those of us deep in the computer industry) have been expecting that move for a year now.

The SCOOP is as I said above. Hopefully its not as bad as expected and we will still have 3 major graphics card manufacturers going forward, time will tell.
  3. Rumor is that Nvidia has stopped production of the GTX260, GTX275, GTX285 cards as they have to sell them at a loss to be price/performance competitive, I think they have publicly denied this but there are a few sources.

So they appear to want to run with the old G92 based cards and the GTX295 cards till the Fermi(G300) part is sorted out, they originally suggested December, but the first run of silicon had only 2% yield, 7 parts out of 416 so people are suggesting quite a while longer.

Hopefully they have enough money in the bank till they can get their silicon yields up on Fermi, but it looks like at least 2 more quarters of loss for Nvidia.

(I wish CoX was available as 64bit app too and would cache all that stuff in RAM to save load times, upper limit of 4 GB would be ok for me, or just make it an option in settings ;-))
It does cache previous zones/maps/missions/costumes in RAM that's why the memory size increases.

Thats what the command /reloadgfx does, it dumps the cached objects from memory.

There doesn't appear to be a memory leak from where I sit, memory use going from 600MB at startup to 1.4GB over time has been normal for me for a long long time, the last memory leak I remember (besides one in bases and at the character creator which were small) went right up to the 2GB barrier and crashed consistently, but iirc that was ~10 issues ago.

I know Radeon cards are not the prefered card for CoX, but for the price range you listed, those were the picks from one of the most respected hardware review sites on their "Best Graphics Cards for the Money August '09" and I have a link for you if you wish to read the entire article.

    Port Forwarding

A NAT Router translates all the game ports just fine.
So no, it won't help. Port forwarding is only useful if you have a real firewall.

Mapserving can be cause by all kinds of things, so posting your DXDiag and Hijackthis can be a good start.

The ones that passed are ones I would expect to, Avira and Kaspersky among them.

Among the failures, Symantec...huge surprise! /sarcasm off

(Note: The testing was done on Vista)

The point to get from this wasn't that there was differing qualities of AV software, it was instead that the very very best AV software was only ~95% effective on the most recent known Virus on the reactive (after its known and the definitions are downloaded), and the very very very best AV software was only ~79% effective on the proactive (heuristics etc) emerging unknown viruses.

If its not stopping 99.9-100% let alone just 99.0% considering that there are 30-100 new viruses every day, its not doing a good enough job and more significant protections are needed including not running as admin, having control over scripting, changing email and browsing habits, staying patched, etc etc etc, virus writers have always had the upper hand in this battle, now they are really making use of it, sitting back and pretending that your AV will protect you will get you rooted.
  9. The path of least resistance for me is actually Microsofts Security Essentials:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivir...sentials.shtml

Free for corporate use as well.

It fills my line item 'have Antivirus' checkbox.

More self protection comes from not using IE6-7, switching to IE8 OR even better using Firefox / Google Chrome.

Even more significant and or extra protection can be had by using DropMyRights and NoScript.

    http://download.cnet.com/DropMyRight...-10722877.html

I am in complete agreement with Ironblade, desktop AV is significantly depreciated to the point of being useless against todays zero day polymorphic virus/trojan/phishing/social engineering attacks.

    Not for crashing.

The Op's problem is overheating, defective hardware or drivers/Vista.

Desaturation sure for visual problems, but the other 2?

Vertical sync combined with Triple Buffering stops tearing.

Anisotropic filtering you might turn off if you had problems with overheating, but I would check and see if the card was overclocked first.

    Otherwise no.

I want to use the Phenom II processor. I can't find a MB that supports the Phenom II and SLI.

So, what I am wondering is this:
Is it worth trying to set things up to make a Crossfire system work with CoH?
Or is it possible to make SLI work on a MB that doesn't support it?

Otherwise, I have to either shell out more money to go with a Core i7, or just run a single video card.

Don't do dual cards for this game, they give limited or no improvement in performance.

If you really have money burning a hole in your pocket go ahead and get them for some other games.

Most people here recommend getting 1 really fast card instead.

After all, things like AE is a constantly evolving monster prone to take on a life of its own. We've seen that much happen in the few short months since the release of AE. To put it bluntly, I'm highly skeptical that a tiny division/company like PS is capable of devoting the manpower and resources required to handle AE in its current incarnation in the long run. At least not without sacrificing significant man hours that could be put into the development of other areas of the game.
QFT. This sums it up for me, and the evidence is plainly obvious that the devs have been abysmally slow in 'fixing' anything AE related, whether its game mechanics or subscribers.

Sure it is getting tougher to catch the brand new 0-day ones, but with the increasing sophistication of the heuristics engines they do a decent job, and to say they can't stop an infection from occurring is ridiculous. Sure it's not perfect, but that in no way makes it any less important to have a current, reliable and proven AV solution.

It seems you are arguing that they are next to useless, yet still use them. I guess I just don't understand your duality in this, so I will stop trying.

    Knock it off!

People will think we're having a civil discussion! FMJ sucks.

'Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!'

I have cleaned up about 100 of the WinAntivirus2009(lots of variants) in the last 2 years or so, including the rootkit versions. All of those desktops had up to date major name brand retail and or corporate AV, you name it, it was rooted. Half the time the AV didn't even know the PC was infected or the virus simply disabled the AV, the other half the AV reported a file, but the other 15 files it couldn't find.

I'm not saying remove AV from the picture, just don't rely on it, it will let you down spectacularly. Everyone needs to adjust to overcome the phishing, trojans and social engineering the virus writers are moving towards.

Those 2 Czechoslovakian guys(iirc) who are behind the WinAntivirus, used many different methods, including infected Flash Ads, Trojan emails purporting to be from your Airline or Courier company 'here are details of your package in zip format', same but emails with links to infection sites, etc etc.

    FMJ sucks.

Well, apparently is saved you at least twice.

Because you have incredible luck regarding your exposure, how does this say that the AV's don't work or are useless? That is like saying "I have never been shot while wearing a Kevlar Vest, there for wearing one won't protect me from a gunshot." Even though it has been proven to do so.
As FatherX noted, the best that desktop AV can do today is to notify you that the computer is infected, and stop older known viruses which generally only last a week or 2, with a few notable exceptions.

As he also noted, separation of the browser from the OS is the next most powerful protection, sandboxing can accomplish this for any (afaik) browser out there today.

It notified me twice, and it has nothing at all to do with luck, I am personally so far off the virus radar it takes extraordinary circumstances for me to be infected.

I don't use Outlook any version, never have.
I don't use MS Office, stopped after 97.
I don't use Internet Explorer, never have.
I have used sandboxed browsers for years.
I have used no-script nearly since the day it was released.
    And more.

I still think the general public should have the line item checkbox of 'i have AV' but its value is significantly eroded and in the last 2 years or so its almost useless.

What I am saying is that the doctor is useless and can't help you, I have seen every major AV product completely rooted in the last 2 years or so, over and over again.

In fact in some cases the AV has caused more problems than the viruses in the same timeframe.

And i'm not running without protections, I have just pushed them to the most logical and efficient place:

I have my AV and spam protection on my Router
You both need to read much closer, I have my AV on my border, EVERYTHING in and out of all types is scanned, all email, all web, all chat, all FTP everything.

I scan hard media manually, I am completely on top of my browsing, I have not had a virus on one of my PC's in 10 years or more and no more than 2 ever, and 1 single piece of spyware ever.

I'm suggesting that they released a significantly imperfect addition to the game, on top of that their happy happy idea that no one would abuse the addition was a serious mistake, on top of that, the completely lackluster enforcement of their own rules ergo 1 week or more to fix HUGE exploits like Comm officers and Mitos', thats egregious in the extreme, a person could have created 2 lvl 50's per day, so in the extreme 14 lvl 50 characters, THEN! they take a week or more to punish people for using what they have created is so ridiculous as to defy imagination!
No offense. But you're throwing rocks at people trying to manage a very large software project. A one week turnaround time for something like that is EXCELLENT. It's not as simple as clicking "File, Edit, Delete, Mito".

As to your position on punishing people who utilized an exploit once it became known? Are you SERIOUS?
I completely disagree, i'm throwing rocks at people mismanaging a very large software project, furthermore, I more than completely disagree, 1 Week is abysmal, a couple of them were more like 2 weeks, 1 day is reasonable, 2 days is unreasonable, for all of it, the fixes and punishment.

They need to apply immediate pot bellied stove to any punishments, waiting a week is abusive and confusing to players.

There are many strategies they could have employed to handle the exploits in a timely manner, yes they could have instantly temporarily disabled Mito's then applied a comprehensive fix later, that would be OK, waiting 2 weeks to do anything at all isn't.

Certainly I will, right or wrong, its an interesting debate.

Yah, you don't seem to be getting it. I'm not denying it has an impact on many players. The point is: if someone denies that it's having no impact on many players-- and it's not--then they're not seeing the whole picture. Their view, to use your own word, is myopic.

Also, by definition, the number of players on which the impact has been negative must be a minority. Because if they were a majority, well, there wouldn't be a problem at all, right?
And thats why there isn't thread after thread complaining about it, and instead there is thread after thread of 'everyone' saying how great the MA is!
Why are you even in this thread? There obviously isn't any problems at all with MA, why bother arguing?

    Quote:
Several of his points are, in fact, not valid. Such as, for example, that MA has caused "massive inflation" on the market... which is demonstrably wrong.
I think that is still arguable in terms of gross inf, a few small examples of deflation doesn't overtake a few large examples of inflation.

    Quote:
I think MA is already an amazing addition to the game.
Certainly, but that doesn't mean its not in need of ALOT of work.

Trivializing the impact on any segment of the community is potentially detrimental to the game. Folks like Alt don't seem to give a toss how their "solutions" might impact me or anyone else like me. He simply labels me an exploiter and puts me on ignore.

That seems like trivialization to me.
