Latest Nvidia driver
Given the new of Nvidia-based GPUs kinda going 'bye bye' in the future I wonder if CoH support for ATI-based cards will improve.

Be well, people of CoH.
Aren't those talking about them pulling out of the computer chipset battle, not GPUs?
So no nvidia-based motherboards, but we'll still get graphics cards.
We don' need no stinkin' signatures!
Hmm . . . then I hope Paragon gets their act together before my next upgrade.

nVidia denies those rumors last I heard.
ATI caught them flatfooted (or pants down, pick a metaphor) with the HD 4xxx series. Now that the HD 5xxx series have out performed nVidia's GTX285, ATI has officially caught up. nVidia's solution is to release a white paper on how awesome their next generation top end chip will be.
Personally, I don't care about the $400-600 video card, what are you doing in the $150-250 range that's new? Look at the last three generations.
G80 - 8800GTX top end, anemic 8600 as mid range.
G90 - polished up G80. 9600GT is what the 8600 should have been.
G200 - GTX260/275/280/285, where's the midrange based on this design?
G300 - over twice the SPs of the G200. Over twice of a lot of aspects of the G200.
In a market where people are looking for a luxury trim sedan, you, nVidia, are delivering hand built super sport cars. PhysX isn't going to save your bacon.

If AMD/ATi were as well supported in drivers for this game (as Nvidia's), I'd make the switch over to the 58x0 series right away.
Rumor is that Nvidia has stopped production of the GTX260, GTX275, GTX285 cards as they have to sell them at a loss to be price/performance competitive, I think they have publicly denied this but there are a few sources.
So they appear to want to run with the old G92 based cards and the GTX295 cards till the Fermi(G300) part is sorted out, they originally suggested December, but the first run of silicon had only 2% yield, 7 parts out of 416 so people are suggesting quite a while longer.
Hopefully they have enough money in the bank till they can get their silicon yields up on Fermi, but it looks like at least 2 more quarters of loss for Nvidia.
Ok, the scoop is that due to the lawsuit with intel, NVidia is halting production on the chipsets for Intel Processors.
Nothing about them stopping and GPU production at all, in fact the HPC architecture is being used in the Fermi GPU's and will continue to be worked on.

The SCOOP is as I said above. Hopefully its not as bad as expected and we will still have 3 major graphics card manufacturers going forward, time will tell.
I hope Nvidia wins personally.
My media center computer has an AMD and ATI card in it. Updating that thing is a royal. Nvidia's site is nice and simple to use.
One another point, I've been using the 8600GT card for awhile now, and it still out shines the ATI card in the media center machine.
But I agree, Nvidia is building nicer and newer cards, but who can really pay 400+ bucks for a video card.
And why can't Intel play nice with everyone?

I had my 8800GT die recently and ended up trying ATI again. I went with the HD4770 and for about $100 it's very nice. The only thing I don't like is that I seem to have to turn FSAA on in game each time I log in to get rid of the super reflective water effects.

Suspicious, that is a known problem of ATI drivers. They don't play well with several of the settings in the game, including Bloom and Water Effects. You may want to check out Bill Z Bubba's stickied post ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations. It will give you an understanding of what settings the ATI drivers have problems with, and in some cases why, as well as recommendations for settings. Even though the post is old, the same issues still exist, so that thread is a good starting point for ATI users. You can tweak your system after that with a better understanding of what problems may occur.
Once you understand the why on some of them, it will really make you wish ATI's Agent Ruby had had more interaction with out game community.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

OK so if theres no more gtx 285 whats the next best thing?
I was planning on buying one of those whn the price went down <_<
The current rumors are that manufacturers and not nVidia are deciding not to continue producing the 260/275/285 series of cards because the profit margin are so thin. Unless nVidia reduces the cost of the G200b GPU and license fee for the board layout of course.
ATI's new HD 58xx series are faster than the GTX 285. The less expensive one, the HD 5850 is in the $260 range with the more expensive HD 5870 in the $380 range. Of course you will be stuck with the quirks that ATI's drivers have with this game (see BillZBubba's ATI guide) but due to short supply and high demand are constantly out of stock at NewEgg.
However looking at NewEgg there still seems to be an able supply of GTX 285s in the mid $300 range, for now.

Just d/l and installed the Nvidia 191.07 driver for my puter. (HP, 7900GS agp card, WinXP). It runs CoH, Oblivion and all my other games fine, no hitches so far.
