I want to do that, but part of me doesnt, like it would be a insult to her. Near 10 years we had her, and a week or whatever after her death I just get a new dog? That seems demeaning. While I love the idea of coming home and seeing my dog at the top of the stairs happy that I'm there, I want my old dog more than I want a new one.

I understand that feeling.. the thought that you're 'replacing' them.
Having gone through all this myself, all I can say is, it sounds like you give too good a home to not offer it to another dog.
Give yourself some time - a month or two - to deal with Liberty's passing. You will never be able to replace her. That must be understood. But to not offer the same loving home to another would be a waste.
Remember her. Honor her memory. Just remember that when you do get another dog - and I do recommend that you do - you will find that the dog will not be a replacement.

Yeah Scott Kurtz just lost his dog Kirby recently, and it was a terrible blow to everyone who reads PVP. And while he admits he's never going to "get over" Kirby, he did go to a specialized shelter and pick up TWO bassets (as was Kirby) - share the love. There are plenty of puppies who wont' know the kind of love that Liberty had, or Kirby, or anyone else's beloved pet.
Some time not too soon and not too far away, I'm sure that there will be a wonderful, completely different soft slobbery warm spot in your heart. It won't ever fill the hole left by the last one, but it'll snuggle up none the less.

Meanwhile my cat's still running around at 16, crying for water every 5 minutes, and obviously not noticing/caring that her big black counterpart is now missing.
See, cats are so independant of things, they're often just about disconnected from reality.

I'm gonna go play with my dog outside now after reading this thread.
I have to admit, made me kinda teary eyed.
Well, in another post note, as weird as it is, as I was cutting my lawn(it finally stopped raining after X amount of days), well, I came across the last couple "deposits" she'd made. Never gonna be having to look around the yard first, at least, unless we get another dog. Went to get lunch today, someone in the parking lot was in their SUV with a golden retriever named Blue, talked to them a min, and got to pet the dog, who proceeded to get all my face with doggy affection, which, naturally, 10 seconds after I walked away left me with very blurry vision. I'm really torn about getting another dog or not, I think I will though, cause my heart will stay shattered if I don't think there's some wonderful ball of fur happy to see me every time I walk through that door waiting for me.
Well obviously, wait a bit, but evaluate your house and money situation. Is your house puppy safe or adult-doggie safe only? and obviously, is someone home to take care of young puppy?
I was making some wolf-character art tonight and stopped around the stock art areas of Deviantart and came across some STUPIDLY ADORABLY CUTE puppy pictures. I wish that I had a much larger house, and maybe... not 8 cats. lol.

She looks very beautiful in the photo. I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm sure that she had lived a full, if not happy life under your care. Please cherish the memories and know that you had provided her with a home, love and companionship before it was time for her to say goodbye.
We wouldn't be getting a puppy. As compared to 1999, when 4 people lived in my house, I was working only 3-4 days a week, my brother was still in school/home,etc, etc. Fast foward a decade, i work 4-6 days a week, my brother works and often isnt home, and my sister doesnt live there. So, the primary care and affection would be given by my mom, and then me.
Any more thoughts, pet stories, funny or sad? I don't want this thread to die, not just yet.
Ericson,
I am sorry for your loss. I have a couple cats myself, and I love them, I love animals in general, including dogs, (just don't have time to give one a good home right now.) and it is very sad to lose them.
It's a special bond between an animal and it's human companion, and it's sad when that companion is no longer there. Anyway, I feel for you and I hope your heart ache dulls soon, though I will say I looked up the image and that was one nice looking pooch, I want one like that when I am out of school and have more time to properly care for a dog.

I know it's been said a lot, but I feel for ya, man. My husband and I had to put down one of our four pets (or children, if you go by how we treat them) last year and I still miss her. In her case (13 year old cat), she had a tumor at the base of her ear and went from a fluffy 12 pound butterball to a 6 pound cat that couldn't hold herself up within a month.
The best thing I can tell you and that I tell myself about my cat is that you gave your dog a life that many animals end up not being able to experience....be happy for that.

I am, and of course, I'm watching The Hangover tonight, and theres two scenes with a lovely golden Lab, which is the kind of dog my mom's thinking of getting. So, meh, I see any dog now, I'm gonna be going Awww and :::mental weep:::
Also, I need people's opinion. From July 16-26 I'm taking a break from work, and as I'll be home 90% of that time, I was wondering, that, if I get a new dog, I should get him/her right around then or just before then, so I can spend as much time as needed right up front to welcome/help the dog adjust to his/her new home, family, etc?
That sounds like a good idea. That will also give you plenty of time to get to know your new dog, and see what is uniquely special about him or her.
I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost pets, it is always a great sadness. I look over at my husband's cat, who sits on his lap or shoulders while he games, and I am more thankful than I can say for both of them.
Best wishes.
Alright, you wanted a special pet story.
In 1997. our apartment building burned in the middle of the night. I was only able to save our daughter, we were the last people to get out safely.
Our cats, Zen and Batcat (Black cat with a white oval on his chest) were not so lucky. Fortunately, Neither suffered as their deaths were from other causes than fire.
After a year of health problems, and well settled in our new house, we got a kitten from a shelter. He had been found thrown into a dumpster with his two brothers. As my health was still dicey, we decided we could not adopt the others 2.
Flash forward to when we were taking the new kitten in for his boosters. Our daughter said to us "Get me a girl kitten this time!". My husband explained that we really couldn't get another kitten. She dropped tears as tragic as only a five year old could, and went to school.
We get to the shelter, and it is LOUD. A group of kids who apparently didn't have school this day, were killing time while their mother was seeing the vet. Whenever the attendants were not looking, they were poking at the dogs there, and the dogs were barking in frustration.
I walked up to stand next to the boys so they would stop it, as my husband tried to catch their mom coming out of the vets office. I looked in the cages to see if the animals were alright. One wasn't. A kitten, about the same age as our new one was shaking, quite terrified.
The attendant let me take her into the private sound proof room to comfort her, and told me her story. The kitten had been bought from a store for a Christmas present for a little girl. Saddly, the little girl turned out to be allergic, so her parents had brought the kitten here to be adopted. The little female kitten, the same ages as the one we had. The only kitten in the entire shelter that day. It was a fait accompli.
Since that day, the cat, Brandy, has been our daughters best friend. She has been there for all of her joys and sorrows. She sleeps in her arms, and when my daughter is elsewhere, Brandy will sleep in the foyer.
Our daughter is 16 now. It has always been plain to her that she was fated to have her wonderful cat. And they are still best friends.
I think if you're going to be home, that's a perfect time to both bond and let the pet acclimate to the area. Plus it's also good if the animal isn't "right", you'll know in that time.
*hugs*

<whispers to remind OP>
rescue centers...and don't be picky about the age...adult dogs need love and homes too.
...just reminding the OP.
I've had some really great "slightly used, refurbished to factory specs dogs" in my life.
I had posted earlier about your loss and that fact that as i was typing to you, my 2 yr old black lab was at my feet sleeping.
How I ended up with him, to me was fate. When my now wife moved in 3 yrs ago...she brought her 3 cats Well over time I ended up loving all 3, they were very personable cats and had 3 unique personalities.
But 2 yrs ago i was ready to finally get my dream dog, a black lab. My wife worked with a nurse who had a female accidentally get pregnant. They were in a hurry to get rid of puppies, either by selling our dropping off at the shelter. I was off for business the following week. When I got home we called her, her son answered who didn;t seem to know or care much about the pups. He said he thought they had one left. We raced the 25 miles to their home. They were apparently keeping them in the laundry room in a large kennel. The not so interested son glanced in the room and said. I don't see the last one, probably was sold today...sorry.
I was crushed...as I turned to leave I heard a grunt. I turned back around and saw a pile of clothes move. I hopped the baby gate and lifted the pile to see a 6 week old sleeping black lab pup. He was knocked out in puppy dreamland.I picked him up and he opened his eyes, grunted, licked me, closed his eyes and grunted again.
I now have my best friend, Wrigley, and Yes...even as i type this now,he is at my feet, off in puppy dreamland...grunting away
Is it ok if I start crying again after reading that? I suppose im partially torturing myself if the fact that my Windows background is the picture of my dog I posted earlier.
My Pet Story
I finally had bought my first home with the wife and expecting 4 new boys on the way (quads). Well, we decided to find a dog to give a home, so we looked around and I really wanted a golden retriever, but none of the shelters had one. However, someone told me about Golden Rescue. I googled them for my area and called them.
Long story short. We went looked at all the goldens available for adoption. However, there was one that was hidden in the kennels that I saw that was avoding us and all the golden commotion. We asked about him and found out he was an abused dog that was hung by his tail and beaten with a stick. Well, i approached him and he was very cautious, but did not snarl or give me one of those "leave me alone" looks. As i managed to coaxs(sic) him out with a bacon treat, i noticed his tail for the first time. it was broken and twisted. If you've seen goldens, then you know their tails are beautiful flags. Well, for some reason I cannot explain, I knew this was the dog. Anyways, it took a while to regain trust and with lots of love, he became our 5th child.
Unfortunately, like all good stories, he was ten years old when I woke up on Christmas day and he was gone. Nothing was amiss to tell me or my wife anything was wrong. I cried as I put him in his new doggie bed we had gotten him for christmas as I carried him out to my car to go to the vet. The vet did a necrospy and told us he died from cancer. What was mind blowing was that 1 week prior to his death we just had a doggie physical and he was rated in top health!
Oh, I forgot to mention. I called him Kinkers. Now my 4 twelve year old boys all have a golden as well as I. It took a liitle time, and my new golden (Stitches) is just as precious to me as was Kinkers. He did not take Kinkers place, but filled a hole that has new memories and new love and a stronger bond than ever for my original golden and has made me realize, that there is more for others.
I already did. Hence this:
