If I get enough fur off my cats from combing them, do you want me to knit you a cat?

I have a cat. Her name's Casey, shes' 16, we got her back in 1993, a month after my father died of cancer. So, to be depressing, I havent had a father for half my life, and I had my dog for 1/3rd my life. And BTW, my cat's still a nut, running all over the place.

My cat is getting old as well. She's a stubborn cat who wants nothing to do with you. You could fall in a ditch for all she cares.
Typical cat.

Gonna be sad with the old fart finally kicks the litterbox. I've gotten quite fond of her.

She doesn't care.

Where's her dinner and catnip mouse, by the way?

My 1st true pet(disregarding a goldfish I got when I was 4 that I only remember through 2 pictures) was a small Cocker Spaniel/Dauschaund cross, tri-colored, and rather Benji-like in appearance otherwise...I was only 8 years old then, and he was only 8 -weeks- old, but it didn't take long for Digger(as my mom would name him) to entrench himself firmly in my life...; stubborn to a fault, I still suspect he was actually far smarter than he let on.

I literally grew up with him, and his life, except for a few very scary near-misses(he once attempted to attack a St. Bernard 10 times his weight...it didn't go very well), was happy and otherwise uneventful; as he entered his -EIGHTEENTH- year of life, he was already the Methuselah of the community pets, far outliving every other dog I remember seeing during that time....

Tragically, time finally began to take it's toll on him, and the last 6 months of his life were much slower and less active; he spent his days during the spring and summer of 1998 mostly lying in the sun, and rarely moving, except to eat and find another spot in the sun or our garage to rest.

September rolled around, and it was becoming obvious that his days were numbered, and this time, there would be no miraculous recovery like 3 other episodes in his life that should have, by all rights, resulted in his passing; one Saturday morning, I awoke to the sound of pained barks, spread out once every few minutes...; I quickly discovered that my mother had brought him into the utility/washroom and that his time was very short...his sight appeared to've abruptly left him and it was painfully obvious that he was scared....

We made the decision to have him put to sleep the following Monday, and I went to work that afternoon utterly dreading what was to come...; perhaps as his last gift, he spared me this dreadful task, quietly(and peacefully, according to my parents) passing away while I was at work. My parents wanted to give his remains to his Vet, but I VEHEMENTLY opposed this plan, all but demanding that he be laid to rest in the corner of the yard closest to where his 1st doghouse had sat for years...they gave in to my pleas, and to this very day, the 3 dogs now owned by my parents give that corner a wide berth when they're roaming around...instinct? Who knows....

Tell your pets, feathered, furry, or otherwise, that you love them...and they'll always return it....

I am always saddened to hear of a cherished pet passing on. I know how I would feel if one of my kitties were to perish...

I feel for ya dude.

I really know she's gone when I went to get some potato chips, picked up the bag, and there was no sign of her running in to get one, or get any on the floor.

So very sorry to hear about your loss. As per your request, I gave my dog Caramel a kiss and some doggy treats. He wanted me say thanks to you for the suggestion, but I don't pass along doggy kisses to strangers.

The loss of a loved one is rough, regardless of species. You have my sympathies.

*hugs* So sorry. Even when you expect it, it's always terrible. And someone ALWAYS tells you you should run right out and get a new companion, like that'll fix things.

I did as requested, gave the two dogs (Brandy and Gracy)and three cats (Mister, Tyke and Zepplyn) all loves and treats even if they didn't know why they appreciated it.

And today I had to put a cone on my one cat's head. He licks so much that it's the only way to keep him from licking. So now, not only is he slinking around bumping into things and backing up and freaking out, the OTHER cats are also all freaking out.

They'll get used to it. Oh the things we have to do for our pets

My condolences...

A few years ago, Sheba, my wife's dog before we were married, passed away at 11 years old. She was a great companion.

Currently we have a dog out of both her first and her last litters. Draco is 13 years old, and Hades is 9.

We know Draco's time is short, the cataracts that limit his vision, the limited hearing... Still, there is life in the bark, a spring in his step that even our vet is surprised to see in a dog his age.

The only thing a can say is, your friend is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge .

Edit: Sorry, didn't mean to duplicate it, having just read more of the thread... Still, the sentiment stands.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss Ericsonx. Liberty looks like she was a playful and adorable friend.

I've raised many friends and lost many over the years. My heart goes out to you and your pain.

Be well.

Sorry to hear about your loss...

My previous Dog, Corey, died on August 4th 2006 after living for 13 years. He looked very similar to the OP's dog. I came to accept the fact he was gone a couple of months after he died. We were both born the same year, I've had him for all my life, from early childhood memories, he was such a great dog.

What I hated most about his death was he didn't even die from anything natural. He ate a plastic plate sometime in July that pierced through something.... don't remember what it was, but my parents paid for surgery to be done, and for the next two days, we went to see him as much as possible at the vet. His last day alive, I went to see him early in the morning, and looked good, seemed alert, and it looked like everything was going to be okay. Then, I went their later in the night, a few hours before he died, and he just couldn't move. He was alive, but he hardly moved at all, only his eyes were moving, and I had a bad feeling, and I wake up in the morning to find out he died.

You just have to remember just because he's physically gone, doesn't mean he's gone in your mind, in your memories. We picked up a new dog the day after Corey died, and it eased the pain, and maybe it could do the same for you.

I want to do that, but part of me doesnt, like it would be a insult to her. Near 10 years we had her, and a week or whatever after her death I just get a new dog? That seems demeaning. While I love the idea of coming home and seeing my dog at the top of the stairs happy that I'm there, I want my old dog more than I want a new one.

Our dog Jade passed away suddenly Saturday night. She was fine Friday, running around in the yard like a nutcase like she always did. Even most of the day Saturday she seemed ok.

Then Saturday night my wife let her inside and she just wasn't acting like herself. She was walking very wobbly and refused food for the first time in my experience. We knew that something was wrong.

My wife is a vet tech, so she had planned to take her to work with her on Monday. Sadly, she never got a chance to, because she was gone by morning when we woke up.

Losing a pet is always hard, but it's a lot harder when there's no warning. Jade went from being her normal hyper self on Saturday afternoon to being gone mere hours later. She was a 13 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, who you would have sworn was no older than 5 by the way she acted. My wife had her since she was 17 years old, Jade was her high school graduation present.

I decided to share this here, as I don't think my wife could bear to type all this out right now. I have tears running down my face as I type myself.

Damn, now we're both in the club. Membership in this club sucks. Well, don't read that Rainbow Bridge poem any time soon. You won't be able to see your computer screen AT ALL by the time you finish.
