A Man(Gamer)'s Best Friend passes on.....

My dog, Liberty, passed away today, on my birthday of all days. She'd often sit in the room where I played online, watch TV, play console games, etc, either with head on my leg, or just hoping I'd drop her some potato chips. She was 2 weeks short of being 10 years old, her birthday being July 4, 1999, hence her name. If you have pets, right now, go give them a hug, a pet, a treat/cookie, whatever, and love that you have them now, because the next time you drop some potato chips, and no one comes running in to munch them off the floor, your heart, like mine, will feel that much more broken.

I'm really sorry about the Ericsonx. I know what its like to have a pet pass away, as I've had several dogs over the course of my life (one having had cancer that we just couldnt afford to operate on). It's things like this that make me wish my hamster was a bit more cuddly, and really make me miss my cat while I'm away at school. You have my deepest condolences Sir.

Awww, I'm so sorry. I've lost pets, and have lots more all around the same age as one another. I'm just dreading when they start "turning old".

No pet can ever be replaced, but do think about picking up a shelter puppy Everyone wins.

We found out over Memorial Day weekend that she had a tumor by her heart, they drained off excess fluid, and just said to have her be less active. In that near month since, she'd been pretty ok. And then, well, when you get a phone call at work with your sister in tears....you pretty much wanna shove the customers out of the way, flip off the d-bags, and run home, and I sorta did that. Of course, if my sister hadn't been home, me or my mom wouldnt have come home for another several hours, and well, would have found her dead. Which of course would have shattered my heart even more.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful dog, and I'm sure a member of the family.

I don't have a dog, but we've had our turtle Eastman for over fifteen years, and I know I'll be devastated when we lose him. I'm going to go give him a treat.

That really sucks man. You have my sympathy. I remember calling home from boot camp and while saying goodbye to my mother (we weren't allowed long calls) she said, "Oh before you go . . . Your cat died." I had to wait 2 weeks before I could call again and find out what happened.

That is truly sad news.

Erm... You may not have to really worry about that. Depending on the breed, there is a good chance Eastman will outlive you.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I lost my kitty not too long ago. He was a great cat, only scratching us on accident (like if he fell off the arm of a chair) and loved skritches along his cheeks.

He was also the only cat I've ever known that liked being held in my arms on his back to get belly skritches; all my friends cats always panicked and struggled to jump down if I held them like that. Whiskers once went to sleep like that. Just laid his head back against my arm and slept like that for a while.

He got sick last year, and by the time we had the money to take him to the vet early this one we found out he had a tumor in the back of his head. There wasn't anything we could do to save him. The treatments might have saved him, but he was already weak and the treatments could have killed him anyway, or he might not have recovered if the treatments were successful. The best thing I could do was let him pass on peacefully in his sleep, so that's what the vet did. One shot, and he went to sleep. I skritched his head as he nodded off, he knew I was there by twitching his tail. Once he was asleep he got another shot and that was it.

He was a good cat, and he lived a long and pampered life. It brings me at least some happiness knowing he lived happily.

we have had so many death threads lately

i think we're up to three people and a dog in the last month

not to trivialize these folks' deaths, but this is kind of weird

Well, trust me, you don't wanna hear how many times cancer has hit my family and friends since the early 90's on. Lets just say the count has gone beyond my fingers, and I'm gonna run out of toes to count on next.

It's always hard when a pet passes. No one loves you as much or as unconditionally as your dog

To "borrow" a famous quote...

Near this spot
Are deposited the Remains of one
Who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
If inscribed over human ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Liberty, a DOG

When some proud son of man returns to earth,

Unknown to glory, but upheld by birth,

The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe,

And storied urns record who rest below:

When all is done, upon the tomb is seen,

Not what he was, but what he should have been:

But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend,

The first to welcome, foremost to defend,

Whose honest heart is still his master's own,

Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,

Unhonour'd falls, unnoticed all his worth,

Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth:

While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,

And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.

Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,

Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power,

Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,

Degraded mass of animated dust!

Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,

Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!

By nature vile, ennobled but by name,

Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.

Ye! who perchance behold this simple urn,

Pass on --- it honours none you wish to mourn:

To mark a friend's remains these stones arise;

I never knew but one, --- and here he lies.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I also recently lost a family pet. Our Sharpei we had for 4 years had to be put down after a spinal injury. Got him a few months after we sighed up for CoH. Even made a few toons based on him.

RIP Fatboy.

That was very moving Evac. Makes ya wonder.

I'm not even going to attempt to read that poem posted...I know I wouldn't be able to take it.

I lost my baby, Rascal, to Leukemia on April 8th of this year. I lost my ferret, Sweet Pea, the day after my birthday last year in September.

I like what our vet does...within a couple weeks of a pet passing, they not only send you a card, but a hardened clay heart with the pet's pawprint in it and their name engraved on the back of it.

I have Rascal's hanging up on my desk and Sweet Pea's are by the window.

Its never easy to lose a pet..especially one that is your best friend and your baby. Believe me...I understand.

I was chosen today
I'm learning to fly
the world took me away,
but please don't you cry

And I chose you today
to try and be strong
so please don't you cry
and don't say that I'm gone

When you're feeling alone
just remember our love,
I'm up near the stars
looking down from above.

Remember our love
In a moment you'll see
that I'm still here beside you
when you're thinking of me.

Wow. Sorry for your loss. She was a pretty one.

That sucks. I am sorry to hear that she has passed. Our animal companions mean so much more to us than words can convey.

They comfort us without asking for anything in return, except the same love and shelter we would provide anyway. They are there at our best and worst moments..bearing witness to sides of ourselves and our lives that no person could.

If I may suggest something, and just keep it in mind, adopt another companion.

Liberty and every animal you've ever cared for would approve wholeheartedly.

Find another one to care for, and shelter, and love. If your love of liberty is as big as I percieve it, another little one to care for is great for an animal lover's fractured soul.

There are so many out there needing a good home, so many being abandoned in this frail economy.

To go out and adopt again, would be helping you as well as the animal you pick up.

Good luck and as an animal lover, my heart goes out to you.

Peace Health and Happiness wherever you and yours may find it.
