143. Pretend to be a female super-hero.

[/ QUOTE ]
But pretending to be a super-hero is okay, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Never said I had a problem with males playing the role of a male super-hero. My problem is males playing the role of a FEMALE and leading on people to believe they are FEMALE IRL.

Not only that, but then taking it to the next level with involves sexual remarks that are unacceptable.

You should re-read the first 10 pages or so.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm pretty sure you were against males in general playing female characters. Because that's what caused the uproar in the first place.

EVERYONE has agreed with you that people who lie about their gender IRL -for the purposes of disruption, aggravation, etc- are a bad thing.

It's the "guys roleplaying girls are bad" attitude that people are having trouble with.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wrong

I even said I had a female character. But I dont go around pretending I'm female when playing on that toon.

[/ QUOTE ]

You don't roleplay that character as female though, do you? Not say YOU YOURSELF are a female in real life, but roleplay the part of a female super-hero.

[/ QUOTE ]

I dont RP at all. When I log onto the game, I come to "play the game". I dont sit at work waiting until I can get home and assume the role of a super-hero and I surely don't get off pretending to be female....with respect to ANYTHING in life whether it be a RPing game or anything else.

When I would play Mario Cart, I never thought I was Mario. I would just sit and race around the stupid tracks.

I just don't get how people get off on pretending to be someone else or their character IN-GAME. Ok, I can understand on the forums. I can see that the RPing forum here is very active. Its text based and I get it. Its a way for people to be creative and express themselves. I don't think its the same IN-GAME. While in-game, it can and is taken to inappropriate levels. Sure, not by everyone I know. But when does it get turned off?

Again, how do I or anyone else know when you're RPing or just being straight up?

Wiki brought up a good point...is there a RP dedicated server here? If not, why not? If so, then don't bring that crap to other servers.

[/ QUOTE ]
As it was pointed out, "roleplaying" takes various forms. People don't necessarily "pretend they're that character", a concept you seem to disdain. I have two characters I will "roleplay" on occasion, both female. The reason is the same reason I wrote an arc for AE.... being able to create. When I made these two characters, I wrote an interesting backstory for each. When the characters were online, with their backstories, it seemed odd to have them acting like I would. Since I relate more to my male characters, I never really roleplay them because they're just extensions of me. With those two though, I bring them to life. It's why an author writes a character into a novel.... not because he wants to pretend to be the character, but because he wants to bring that character to life on the page. So my elderly female stone tanker speaks more gently than I would, and is much much more conservative.

Regardless, it's quite ... rude to come into a game that's advertised as a roleplaying game and criticize people for doing so. Even though you may not want to, it is a premise of the game. It's like going to a gym because you like the aerobics class, and then telling the weightlifters that they shouldn't lift weights around you because you don't like the noise.

Clap, Clap, Clap.

Well put TonyV.

I think the two trains of thought as playing the system Vs playing the game. Playing the system is the belief that maximizing XP, leveling speed, set bonuses, etc. is what the game is about. No those are the game's mechanics. The game is about heroes (or villains) going about their business in a world not that dissimilar to the ones we see in DC or Marvel comics.

I play a scientist/engineer in an 8 1/2 foot tall suit of power armor he originally designed for fire/rescue, now disguised to look like Santa.

I play a 57 year old half human/half fox spirit that looks 24 because of the long lifespan her mother's side of the family granted after her "training".

I play a Grey that was incarcerated since he crashed in Roswell in 1947. He was released due to his help during the first Rikti Invasion. After 50 years of learning culture through of TV and movies he has a somewhat odd sense of human normalcy.

I play a 20 something heiress to a family in the weapons business. Unlike other famous 20 something heiresses, she isn't on the cover of tabloids with stories of drunken debauchery but the cover of various gun magazines and training for the Olympics in the various shooting events.

I play a former British Army Major in Queen Victoria's service who after retirement became an inventor, creating devices for the military. Unfortunately for him a device he created that kept meals hot or cold and kept food stores fresh indefinitely didn't work the way he thought, like a super thermos. One afternoon his cat jarred the door and it closed on him while he was inside. He found out when the door was opened, 103 years later at the tech achieves of DATA in Paragon City, that it actually insulated the contents from time itself.

I play all these characters very differently. Not just because of their power sets or ATs but because they are different people with different backgrounds, wants and desires. I converse with other players differently with each. Some are shy. Some are wiseasses. Some are socially liberal, some conservative. Each has a concept in my mind to who they are and when playing them I try to behave how they would behave.

The problem for me is I havent been exposed to the ones who RP in good fun. My first and only experience with RPers was with 2 idiots who found it necessary to harass the SG and take things to a unacceptable sexual level.

[/ QUOTE ]
And those two people stepped far over the boundary of decent behavior by passing themselves off as something else in real life, and by being overly sexual. The mistake you're making is assigning that behavior to all the various roleplayers, regardless of how lightly or deeply they're into it. With that reasoning, I could say that all COX players are overly-aggressive jerks because that's what I find on my teams at times.

For the majority of the game though, you'll find that there is quite a bit of RPing going on in various degrees. Sometimes it may even be just a few comments that would seem appropriate for the character being played. A lot of times, I doubt the player even realizes they're doing it. You have a big beefy Inv/SS tank and yell out "IT'S CLOBBERING TIME!" as you run in to grab aggro... that's minor roleplaying.

I don't have the patience for hanging out in pocket d and typing up long stories. I put that effort instead into AE. But for my two female characters, I give them a "personality". Nothing more. I think quite a few people do that, they just add some personality to their character. That personality doesn't have to be sexual, unlike those two in the SG. My DD is a bit flirtatious, but she's definitely not going to cyber with you. If anyone does start getting ideas, she just says "Hon, I had to sign papers with Feedom Corp promising that I wouldn't play around until the doctors are sure I won't hurt anybody again", and they get the idea I'm not interested.

What those two players did is like when you see losers going into chat rooms pretending they're someone else just to play mindgames. They were losers pretending to be roleplayers.

TonyV and you other RPers, which servers do you play on? I think it'd be fun to make a character there and try out some of what you do.

I play primarily on Virtue, but I'm also part of the RPCongress on Pinnacle, with a few more on Victory.

I'm on the "Southern Redneck's" server. Oh dear... he might hunt me down and try to kick me off.

I'm on Virtue, but you can find quality players and RPrs on every server.

Virtue. Tends to be where you'll find the most RPers, though you can likely find 'em on any server.

Dear Goddess. I can't believe the flame that has been ignited! WA calling people losers, essentially, for cross-gender "roleplaying" when the real losers just happen to be the people who got suckered into cyber and were then too homophobic to get over it.

I would never tell my true gender to an SG mate who wasn't a good friend in real life. Why? It has no bearing on the game whatsoever, whether you're RPing with me or not. If it makes a single iota of difference to you whether I've got an innie or outie, then you're a sexist and I don't care to know you. I want to be judged on how I play the game, or the level of RP fun I can bring to the table. Anything else is 100% irrelevant to the game.

Eh, I tell if/when RP might lead to a relationship just because it can create too much trouble if I don't. Yes, I'm secure enough to RP a female character who has a boyfriend. No, I don't cyber anyway, so that's irrelevant. But, some folks tend to get weirded out by it. Some folks have trouble with separation of IC and OOC, too...which can make things weird for ME if I don't come out with it.

Well, really, I tend to be up front about it in general. Exception being in my EQ2 guild, where people don't tend to want OOC details about players talked about in public channels. But, I'd never actively lie about it. Even so, I can see why someone would with the attitude a lot of people have toward playing cross-gender characters. Saves a lot of headaches. 'course, the people WA described went way too far with it, but they're exceptions to the norm.

There's not one because the game itself is an RPG ( Hence, MMO***RP***G ). And if you have a problem with people roleplaying, get the smeg out of our RPG. If you don't want to RP, fine, no problem. But if you're going to sit here and belittle and generalize RPers, the get the hell out. You're in the WRONG place.

go back and read MY posts on this topic.. pretty sure we dont think exactly the same things. I explained why HE had issues with "role playing" and I explained what mine were, since it directly had an affect on me.

its like everything in society really.. religion, politics, sexual prefrences...

why does it have to be shoved down someones throat?
(no pun intended)

sorry these 2 people in question gave us the bad opinion of role playing.. whats upsetting is the way the majority of you seem to think its ok what they did and excuse it and are now trying to make this an issue of being homophobic and intolerant. Which, is quite funny considering I grew up 30 mins from San Francisco and know a lot of gay and lesbian people.

Wait, let me guess, youre going to say im stero-typing all people from San Francisco now, right?

The irony in the past couple of posts has just stunned me into silence. I think I've made my point.

Irony (from the Ancient Greek εἰρω&#957 ;εία eirōneía, meaning hypocrisy, deception, or feigned ignorance) is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity or discordance between what one says or does and what one means or what is generally understood. Irony is a mode of expression that calls attention to the character's knowledge and that of the audience.

There is some argument about what qualifies as ironic, but all senses of irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between what is expressed and what is intended, or between an understanding or expectation of a reality and what actually happens, "when the literal truth is in direct discordance to the perceived truth."

This entire thread and topic is ironic.

What would also be ironic and make me laugh my bloody head off would be if this whole forum drama had been carefully staged from the beginning. Roleplaying, right?

I don't think that's the case, though, and I'm not going to throw any more gasoline toward the embers here.
