Actually I think the genre is MMOG...not MMORPG. Massively multiplayer online game, not necessarily Massively multiplayer online ROLEPLAYING game.

So roleplaying is actually not the focus of the genre. just to be clear.

It says MMORPG right on the box, by the way, just to be clear.

It also says it in the in the ad copy. I don't think there's any question that the game was designed and is marketed as an MMORPG, not just an MMOG.

[/ QUOTE ] Outside of silly arguments, it doesn't really matter if the game is an MMOG or MMORPG. It doesn't change anything. People can role play or not. Both playstyles are just as valid as the other no matter what you call the genre, or even what the developers intended.

Decided to look up MMORPG on Wiki and found some things to be rather interesting....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMORPG

Roleplaying

Some MMORPGs also may expect players to roleplay their characters – that is, to speak and act in the way their character would act, even if it means shying away from other goals such as wealth or experience. However, as this behavior is far from being the norm, most MMORPG players never actually play the roles of their characters.[10] Still, MMORPGs may offer "RP-only" servers for those who wish to immerse themselves in the game in this way.

Culture

Some players might look down on those who invest huge amounts of time and or money into a game, while others might scorn those who can't put in the time to "play properly". The validity of such viewpoints is heavily debated, with both sides of the issue being discussed frequently on most games' forums.

---------------

So.....Its not as "normal" as some of you think to actually play the "role" of your character IN-GAME. There's actually fewer of you than there are those who just "play the game"

Secondly, its pretty clear there's a great number of people who share my view about RPing in general. It seems, this discussion is pretty valid on most MMORPG forums. I can't say for sure because this is the first game I've spent any great amount of time playing.

So while I try to understand the fun factor in becoming someone you arnt, know that I'm not the only person who thinks its weird and rather off-putting.

Just added something new to the list of things I rather not do duing my life...

No one is saying that you can't do one or the other. I was just clarifying a mistaken statement, that City of - games are marketed as "MMOG", when that's not the case.

Putting down other people's playstyle, whether they be a powerleveler, marketeer, roleplayer, casual, hardcore, etc makes you(general you) a tool.

But pretending to be a super-hero is okay, right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Never said I had a problem with males playing the role of a male super-hero. My problem is males playing the role of a FEMALE and leading on people to believe they are FEMALE IRL.

Not only that, but then taking it to the next level with involves sexual remarks that are unacceptable.

You should re-read the first 10 pages or so.

I'm pretty sure you were against males in general playing female characters. Because that's what caused the uproar in the first place.

EVERYONE has agreed with you that people who lie about their gender IRL -for the purposes of disruption, aggravation, etc- are a bad thing.

It's the "guys roleplaying girls are bad" attitude that people are having trouble with.

I'd assume the person he was replying to. And I agree. Having a long-distance relationship doesn't suddenly become bad and/or pathetic just because it takes place over the internet.

I dont RP at all. When I log onto the game, I come to "play the game". I dont sit at work waiting until I can get home and assume the role of a super-hero and I surely don't get off pretending to be female....with respect to ANYTHING in life whether it be a RPing game or anything else.

When I would play Mario Cart, I never thought I was Mario. I would just sit and race around the stupid tracks.

I just don't get how people get off on pretending to be someone else or their character IN-GAME. Ok, I can understand on the forums. I can see that the RPing forum here is very active. Its text based and I get it. Its a way for people to be creative and express themselves. I don't think its the same IN-GAME. While in-game, it can and is taken to inappropriate levels. Sure, not by everyone I know. But when does it get turned off?

Again, how do I or anyone else know when you're RPing or just being straight up?

Wiki brought up a good point...is there a RP dedicated server here? If not, why not? If so, then don't bring that crap to other servers.

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I'm OOC, I (( Put parenthesis around my text so people know I'm talking OOC. ))

I don't understand how you can understand RPing on the forums, but not RPing in game when it's the same kind of thing. It just takes place real time instead of in a post. If anything, RPing in game is more challenging than on a forum.

There is no dedicated RP server because RP is allowed on all servers as this is an MMORPG.

RPing in-game is not the same as RPing on a forum. There is a difference. RPing on the forums often and does bring out long extended "stories" that a person might compose to continue a particular story line.

RPing in-game consists of more back and forth chat between players. There's a bigger interaction in game between the people than there is on the forums.

There is a difference and a big one at that.

There also can be instant moderation on a forum. What if these people talked to your child in a sexual manner? What would be your opinion of RPers then? Would it change? I think it would.

Sure, you can file a petition and go through all the hoops of getting something done in-game, but what a pain in the [censored]. Its why we didnt bother to report the 2 people from our SG. It just wasnt worth the trouble.

For every 1 person they get rid of, there's 2 more the next day.

[/ QUOTE ] That is stereotyping. What if person of random race A attacked you? Does that mean everyone that is random race A is bad?

Now obviously, racial stereotyping is worse than what you are doing. Let's make this clear: I AM NOT EQUATING THE TWO MORALLY.

However, it is the exact same type of backwards thinking and rationalizing. Exact same.

If the only RP you've experienced is watching other people chat in Pocket D, I can see how you'd get the impression that it was just back and forth chat.

However, in game, it can be a lot more than that. You can write a story as you go. It is SO MUCH more than just "chatting in a bar." I've even made AE missions for people to participate in to further a storyline.

If someone talked to my child in a sexual manner, then 1) I am remiss for not making sure all her chat windows are turned off while she's playing, and 2) I am not so stupid to call out an entire segment of population on something that one individual did.

Why didn't you KICK those two people from the SG? Why didn't you put them on ignore? It seems to me that you really didn't mind that much if you didn't take those actions against them.

I do this.

Player 1: *shaking controller* "LUIGI! DID YA JUST CUT ME OFF?! DID YA SCRATCH MY RIMS?! I'M GONNA SHOVE MY PLUNGER WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE!"
Player 2: "Hah, ya suck, bro. BOWSER IS MY NEW HOMIE!"

Or how about fighting games?

Player 1: "I shall hit you with SEAFOOD!"
Player 2: "Ah-HAH! Your fish are no match for me, little girl, for my mighty bare chest and GIANT HONKING FANS SHALL DEFEAT YOU!"
Player 1: "You fiend! EAT VANQUISHING ANCHOR OF JUSTICE!"

Guilty Gear XX. No, seriously. I admit the Guilty Gear session took place when everyone in the house was half drunk. But hey, it was fun.

And that's what RP's supposed to be. All in good fun. You're running around as a digital superhero in a digital city. Why not play the part?

C'mon, live a little. Why so serious, son?

There's not one because the game itself is an RPG ( Hence, MMO***RP***G ). And if you have a problem with people roleplaying, get the smeg out of our RPG. If you don't want to RP, fine, no problem. But if you're going to sit here and belittle and generalize RPers, the get the hell out. You're in the WRONG place.

[/ QUOTE ]

No. I dont think wrong. I play how I play, and the numbers back up that the vast majority play this way as well i.e. not RPing at all and just mashing buttons and running around in a virtual world.

Therefore, to market the game as a RPing game is actually targetting the vast minority of paying customers, so i think you will find the companies that make these games themselves backing away from the RP element of the MMORPG catch all title.

I am not of the lolrp crowd or really any crowd other then I play to play and have some fun, and dont really care what others do as long as it doesnt tread on "weird" territory and make me or others uncomfortable in game, so the RP in MMORPG is truly meaningless to me, but my $15 a month is not meaningless to the company, nor are the $15 a month of the majority of their playerbases. So in that regard, the game is truly MMOG.

The RP in the title is a relic of a bygone age. MMOGs main income is truly not from RP players.
