Wiki brought up a good point...is there a RP dedicated server here? If not, why not? If so, then don't bring that crap to other servers.

[/ QUOTE ]

There's not one because the game itself is an RPG ( Hence, MMO***RP***G ). And if you have a problem with people roleplaying, get the smeg out of our RPG. If you don't want to RP, fine, no problem. But if you're going to sit here and belittle and generalize RPers, the get the hell out. You're in the WRONG place.

RPing in-game is not the same as RPing on a forum. There is a difference. RPing on the forums often and does bring out long extended "stories" that a person might compose to continue a particular story line.

RPing in-game consists of more back and forth chat between players. There's a bigger interaction in game between the people than there is on the forums.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wrong, skippy. Some people may "RP-lite" where it's just a little IC chatter in-game, but there are plenty of full-on RPers who develop involved stories and etc in-game. Once again, you're generalizing based on limited exposure.

What difference is it that someone wants to pretend to be someone else in a Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game?

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually I think the genre is MMOG...not MMORPG. Massively multiplayer online game, not necessarily Massively multiplayer online ROLEPLAYING game.

[/ QUOTE ]

You think wrong. It's MMORPG. The "lolrp!" crowd just tends to arbitrarily remove the "RP" from it.

[/ QUOTE ]

No. I dont think wrong. I play how I play, and the numbers back up that the vast majority play this way as well i.e. not RPing at all and just mashing buttons and running around in a virtual world.

Therefore, to market the game as a RPing game is actually targetting the vast minority of paying customers, so i think you will find the companies that make these games themselves backing away from the RP element of the MMORPG catch all title.

I am not of the lolrp crowd or really any crowd other then I play to play and have some fun, and dont really care what others do as long as it doesnt tread on "weird" territory and make me or others uncomfortable in game, so the RP in MMORPG is truly meaningless to me, but my $15 a month is not meaningless to the company, nor are the $15 a month of the majority of their playerbases. So in that regard, the game is truly MMOG.

The RP in the title is a relic of a bygone age. MMOGs main income is truly not from RP players.

[/ QUOTE ]

It doesn't matter how YOU or anyone else plays it. It's an MMORPG. Designed and marketed as such.

As to your last line there, RPers tend to be the longest term players. And when you really look at it, you'd be surprised how many people RP to some degree, even if they don't full-out RP.

I'm going to insert a dose of RP into this thread.

[ QUOTE ]
Agent Swoboda dropped her binoculars with a sigh. It didn't matter how many times she told them the subject wasn't here, they wouldn't listen. Nevermind that she was one of their top Agents, Crey had a way of worrying at something like a dog with a bone. If they said something was a certain way, then by god it was even if proven wrong. Dispatch was still jabbering in her ear, so she pulled out the earpiece and let it dangle on it's wire.

Despite the futility of the assignment, she enjoyed coming here. The Hollows had beauty amidst the destruction, and the hillside she stood on now was an example of that. The war wall glimmered in the distance as the Red River ran tumbling through its bed hundreds of yards below. It was the closest thing to a mountain Paragon City had to offer, and lately she'd been craving mountains.

The wind shifted, and her hackles went up as the breeze carried the scent of something very out of place - cologne. That, coupled with the barest shift of weight on a rock caused her to turn around slowly, warily.

A man was standing on top of a rock formation several yards behind her, wearing one of those ridiculous red, white and blue uniforms of Longbow's elite, his face partially covered by a mask and eyepiece. He had a bow slung across his back and held his hands away from his body, showing her he was unarmed. For some reason, this made Agent Swoboda even more wary.

"What do you want?" she called over to him, the wind buffeting her and alternately blowing her hair forward, then back.

"Anya Swoboda?" His words were almost carried away by the wind.

She blinked at that. "You here to arrest me?"

"No, I just want to talk," he said. He sounded earnest at least. Young, too.

"About what?" She moved a little closer, if only so she didn't have to shout over the wind.

He took that as invitation and carefully slid down the rocks, ending on a level ground with her. He still kept his hands well away from any weapons, which pleased her, as she -was- a weapon.

"I.. er... we've been watching you. We have a proposition for you."

She raised an eyebrow - this was a new one!

"Oh?" She moved a little closer. Now they were only several feet apart, instead of several yards. She continued to watch him warily, scanning the surroundings for sign there were more Longbow around. "I'm listening."

[/ QUOTE ]

ALL of that took place IN GAME, didn't involve sex, was totally spur of the moment between two players, and launched a storyline that is still going on today, 10 months later.

This is what RP is - giving life to pixels.

I'm sorry you can't see the enjoyment in that, War_Admiral.

Now obviously, racial stereotyping is worse than what you are doing. Let's make this clear: I AM NOT EQUATING THE TWO MORALLY.

However, it is the exact same type of backwards thinking and rationalizing. Exact same.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, a lot of people think the exact same way.

If you're pulled over and treated badly by a cop, odds are good you won't like cops from that point forward.

Stereotypes suck

Welcome to America.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, by this point, there's probably a lot of folks here who think you - and by association, everyone in your SG and circle of players - are rather uncool people.

Conversely, you might figure we're all a bunch of deviants with the moral standards of an inflatable children's wading pool filled with nails and rancid custard.

That's understandable, but just because it's bound to happen doesn't make it, y'know, right. Or desirable. Or fair. If you think stereotyping's bad, why are you doing it yourself?

I mean, yeah, folks have made personal attacks at you in the thread. No denying that. Yet at the same time, you've consistently been ragging on folks who RP. Obviously they're gonna respond badly...

I mean, as folks have pointed out, this is an MMORPG. We may disagree on how many people in the game actually RP, or how far the game caters to RPers. But there will be a significant population of RPers in any game of this nature. Maybe not a majority, but a significant number.

You don't have to understand that. But can't you accept people do it? Do you have to go around condemning it?

You've included people here in your generalizations. Even after they made it known that they were among the group you were generalizing. At that point, the generalizations became personal attacks.

Either way, such grossly inaccurate and flat-out offensive generalizations are no better than personal attacks.

I agree it happens a ton in America. And you know what? Thinking like that is done by weak minded, ignorant people.

If you think group A* is bad because 1 person from group A* wronged you somehow(real or imagined), then you are a weak minded person.

*group A can mean any categorization of people that you can come up with.

A random person online thinks I'm ignorant. Ouch.

(QR) What really puzzles me here is that - after just two minutes glancing at the SG website linked in War Admiral's signature...

It looks like the group he leads is a cool bunch of people who take pride in their characters - they have neat and well-thought toon names, and they hold big costume contests on their server. These are clearly people who care about character concepts and stuff.

If you're just here to play a game, why bother with all that? Why not just name your characters with wild whacks on the keyboard and use the random button for costumes?

We are a "cool" bunch of people and we do enjoy playing the game. We just don't get off on pretending to be someone were not. We're upfront and honest with everyone we play with.

Sure, we dont enter a group and announce we're male or female. But we do like to get to know the people we enjoy playing with and take the time to help anyone who needs it.

We were burned hard by 2 sketchy RPers and it put a very bad taste in our mouths. I won't apologize for my opinions nor will they change over-night. My purpose in coming here was to simply tell our story and to express our experience.

If its offended you by being grouped with these 2 people, so sorry. Odds are good you'll never see me ingame, meet me in person, or communicate with me outside of these forums.

If you happen to have played with me ingame, you know that I'm a cool dude and just like to play the game. I dont sit around dogging on RPers ingame. I have better things to do with my time and money.

But just like you RPers like to express yourselves to the community (whether they like it or not), I feel like I can do the same here. Again, if that offends you, there's not much else I can say.

[/ QUOTE ] I actually do that a lot of the time.

My blaster Helpless Purple, and my fire/kin troller, Burn Lady, were both random names I put together and used random costume button until I found something that looked decent enough. The only thing I changed was the colors. They are two of my most played characters.

When I would play Mario Cart, I never thought I was Mario. I would just sit and race around the stupid tracks.

[/ QUOTE ]

Do you sit in the carts and go around the tracks? Literally and physically?

It sure does seem like your problem is not with role-players, but with your own qualifications on concepts.

Just about any jerk can get their jollies by ruining someone else's aspect of a game using whatever tools they decide to use, like, in this instance, role-playing. Those are griefers, not role-players.

It seems that you are making this dull leap that one is the equal of the other, when that is not, necessarily, so.

Part of the issue is that most of us just don't understand what was so horrible about two guys playing as females. So what? Other than the fact that if you met them IRL you couldn't get into their pants, what difference does it make?

The only possible difference is that because you thought they were female, you didn't behave the same way towards them that you would have towards male players. And that means that you burned yourself with your own gender stereotypes.

That's a sentiment I fully agree with. I actually think you sound like an excellent and considerate SG leader when you're talkin' about stuff like this. You probably are.

There's been a lot of harsh words exchanged in this thread. I can't speak for everyone, but at least for me, I've just been trying to reach some kind of understanding.

See...if all that matters is the person behind the keyboard - why do you and your SGmates bother with designing costumes and naming your characters? Why not just use your real names and make the avatars look as close as you can get to your real-live selves?

Instead you make characters. Most people who play this game make characters.

At least for me and my friends, RPing in game is just a way of bringing our characters to life. And a way of having fun. That's all there is to it. There's nothing perverted or sinister about it.

I suspect, really...when you get down to it, the close-knit group of players I'm so proud of...we're probably not so different from you and your in-game friends. We're just folks who like playing an online game.

We just take our characters a tiny bit more seriously. It's not like RPers are aliens from another planet or anything - which is something you suggested in an earlier post. I'm from planet Earth, same as you. =)

Only the stupid sector.

i'm generally not a hardcore roleplayer, but i do enjoy casual roleplaying. i will "talk" in character as i blow [censored] up and even engage in banter with teammates that's in character. i tend to model my character's responses, especially if i'm playing one of the opposite gender, on friends' idioms and attitudes that are similar to the personality i've created for the character. i'm not interested in ERP, and never pretend to to be a different gender IRL to lead other players on. (However i do sometimes tell people that i'm a 45 year old, 400 pound unemployed male with poor hygiene and fetish for smearing tuna fish on my feet in real life if they're too persistent about hitting on my female alts.)

i do not justify being a narrow minded, sheltered, intolerant, reactionary jerk by claiming that it's just the way Southern rednecks are naturally. i've known some Southern rednecks who were proud of it, and they weren't xenophobic, intolerant twits like you are. You're just a jerk who apparently lives in a sheltered bubble of ignorance about the outside world. Yay. If knowledge is power you are the ideal opponent for level one players of life.

Still, i do love the way you seem to be justifying your behavior by implying that if a a lot of people do something that makes it right. That sort of thinking always makes me think of something the Reverend Ivan Stang said.

I have keybinds I have defined to make my character spout random phrases that are in character for him or her. Literally speaking, though, that's not really role playing since it's not in response to anything, it's just as mechanical and automated as the game itself. So it's a role in some sense, but it's also still a game.

I'll occasionally go "in character" if I find the others on the team are doing it as well, but many times I'll also just talk as "the person behind the wheel", so to speak. My character is my character and has a personality and backstory, but I'll just interact with the other players as a player.

I guess it takes experience to learn how to draw the line between the two. And perhaps, a bit of a split personality.

I think most people who identify themselves as RPers really do that. I consider myself an RPer, and so do most of the folks in my SG. We call ourselves roleplayers. We accept the label.

But it's not like we stay in-character 24/7. Probably not even most of the time. 90% of our chat is regular person-to-person stuff. I figure that's the case for most RP SGs.

I do pick-up groups on Virtue. So do a lot of RPers. Most RPers, when in a PuG that's mostly folks who don't RP...will respond to questions and chat as themselves, not their characters.

Maybe they'll go through the trouble of putting their statements in (( )) brackets or whatever.

But nobody I know insists on RPing all the time.
