Over half my toons are female..
99% of the new ones I make are female.

Why? because I'd rather look at an attractive female than some guy for 50 levels.

[/ QUOTE ]

/whispers Psst! It's a cartoon character. It's not a real girl.

Seriously, if you're finding your CoX character's attractiveness to be an issue either way, then you need to get out more.

[/ QUOTE ]

How so? Nothing wrong with finding a video game character aesthetically pleasing. Sure, she's not real. But, most of the models in magazines are so heavily airbrushed that they're not really real either.

I managed to avoid gaining one of those on Fironna Vie...

She was a furry too, possibly... (okay, I was playing one of the Vah Shir too, but I was also new to the game and didn't realize she was luring me to a loney corner with a bed at the time!)

And to be honest, I kinda believe everyone is a guy on here unless I can confirm otherwise via Vent or some other method. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The funny thing is...they were both excellant players. Its just a shame they had to RP and pretend they were someone else to enjoy the game. They werent brought in because they were female...they were added because they were good players...so I'll nip that in the bud before someone even goes there.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's a vidoe game where we are all, to some extent or another, pretending we are super heroes. I am not sure I see your point. You said both were good players which is why you invited them in the first place. So what if they were guys pretending to be girls? If that made the game more enjoyable for them .. who cares? Sounds like you actually kicked them from the SG over it. It's your SG and you can do what you want but are there that many GOOD players out there that aren't already in another SG that you'd kick them just because they like pretending they are females?

NOW If they were trying to get other members, male or female, to engage in ERP tricking someone into doing something nasty I see your point. BUT I have friends, that have both male and female characters..Male friends and everyone knows what they are. I myself have ... Ummm trying to count in my head just a sec... 4 or 5 males characters I play and I'm a woman. But I never EVER look for or want EPR as a female or male character. I play to have fun, be heroic for a bit LOL, and chat with my friends. Oh and not that I post a sign above my head "FEMALE PLAYING A MALE TOON" I have no qualms about letting someone know I am in fact a girl playing a guy ATM. BUT everyone is entitles to their opinion.. you have your's .. here's mine Have fun and Be safe!

Going back to the earlier part of the thread, all I can say is wow, most guys get past the gay-cooties stage by the time they're out of their teens.

There seems to be some odd confusion in WA's mind about people's RPing vs. their actual sexuality, with all his remarks that put the word 'boys' in quotes. In my mind, his two SG mates who played as lesbians were probably perfectly average straight as a stick guys, but had found a productive way to milk the SG's sexism for all it was worth. Pretending to be female just made for a great manipulation tool, and obviously it worked well.

For the rest of us out there, there is no relationship between our characters' sexualities and our own. Now, I'm not a heavy RPer. I mostly solo or duo with my regular gaming parter. She and I are both middle-aged women with husbands and careers. But when we play on TFs or in pugs, we tend to play our characters to a certain extent.

For example, we have a regular team of my female toon and her male toon. When we team with others, we play them as a couple. We don't make any big deal of it, we just throw in little remarks here and there that are the sort that a couple would, and I know a number of people we've TF'd regularly who would swear we were SOs in real life.

I had a character on Tunare, in a french guild, but it was never any serious. My main character was on Rodcet-Nife. I had a few alts on Morell-Thule as well.

I played in a pair of RP guilds ( one good, one evil ) that had been on Tunare since EQ launched. ( Wind Riders and Shadow Striders ) According to the leaders, some of the guilds' lore nearly made it into official game lore. I think the reason it didn't make it is SOE wanted to make some alterations that the leaders didn't want to go for...

Thinking about it, some games inspire roleplay more than others. I RPed on EQ, all the time. I RPed so much, I never leveled past 35 and I was there for a good three years too.

Then I played a lot of DAoC. Never, ever once roleplayed there. Dunno why, I just didn't.

Then I played Guild Wars a bit, no roleplay there either. Something to do with Guild Wars' sole player interaction material being the /dance emotes of characters stripped off of their armor. What went through the developer's mind when they decided to make almost all the female characters proudly display skimpy, skin-tight underwear when out of armor? Sex sells I guess.

Then came CoH and WoW. I roleplayed in WoW a lot, got my worst experiences there too. Lots of people in there. Lots of crazies. As for CoH, no roleplay. Too much action, too many bad guys to beat up. Can't talk, queuing blasts.

I've got a php script in the dedicated directory all the images are stored. It's really easy to set up, you can google "random image rotator" and get a ton of hits. Mine is set up for .jpg and .gif so any time I want to add new images to the rotation all I have to do is upload them.

Generally needs your own webspace - you have to change the directory the avatar "image" is in to run a given type of image as a .php script (which requires certain permissions), make a script, rename it as an image (so when I made mine I simply saved it as avatar.gif or whatever) so the boards will take it. The one I used didn't come set up to do multiple filetypes though, and I'm a plug-and-hope .php user :P

What difference is it that someone wants to pretend to be someone else in a Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game?

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually I think the genre is MMOG...not MMORPG. Massively multiplayer online game, not necessarily Massively multiplayer online ROLEPLAYING game.

So roleplaying is actually not the focus of the genre. just to be clear.

I can play side by side just fine with someone who is enjoying playing their character as a role, I just dont like when that role spills over into drama or weirdness.

That said, I personally dont RP, but have no problem with others enjoying that experience with their MMO... I just want to be clear that the genre of game itself is not in fact role-playing.

It is massive multiplayer online that is the true focus- how involved players choose to get with their characters is entirely up to them.

But after reading 20 pages of this, I can simply conclude that RPing is not fun for some, and it is fun for others.

I just like to smash buttons. Others might like to RP... to each their own, we can play side by side just fine ... unless things get wierd.

I dont do drama in a game I play to unwind after work. I have a wife for that.

You realize, of course, that any interation with another user in a virtual environment is in a sense role playing. You are not REALLY trading a Luck Charm to that person so he can build an Accuracy Enhancement. You are trading bits of text represented electronically in a computer so he can activate some code processing which will add other bits of electronic text to his entry in the database. Likewise, you are not teaming with that other user to defeat MOBs, you are sending bits of electronic information through the network to a server to synchronize your reduction of the values associated with that entity's continuance with his reduction of those same values.

In fact, you aren't even reading this. You are looking at pixels on a cathode ray tube. Or a grid of diodes that change transparency when electricity is passed through them.

At some point, you've got to make some symbolic representation of what you're looking at.

It also says it in the in the ad copy. I don't think there's any question that the game was designed and is marketed as an MMORPG, not just an MMOG.
