Wait, wait! VOLCANO? How did we miss this?
I'll chalk this up to yet another piece of background the devs have forgotten about. There's so much information, and there are so many writers who've touched the game over the years, that it's a suprise things are as consistent as they are.
It's also yet more proof of the theory that the Rogue Isles were originally meant to be laid out in a completely different pattern. For instance, the Nerva Archipelago, a U.S. posession, is inexplicably on the far side of the chain from the U.S., and there are a number of other inconsistencies. This could actually make a pretty good MA arc: The Rogue Isles originally DID lie in a different pattern, which someone changed. Why does no one remember it?
Care to take up the challenge?
And, to Spacenut: If you have no trouble suspending disbelief about a volcanic explosion larger than Kratatoa (for what it's worth, neither do I; it's a comic-book world, for heaven's sake), I recommend not visiting any review threads in the MA forum.

How does something this big go completely unmentioned in-game?
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, it gets mentioned all the time. Unfortunetly, super powered teens get emo and punch through reality, people get married and have their loved ones killed only to make faustian deals with super devils, mindwipes happen, you mix in a few infinate crises on infinate earths with an identity crises and the occasional civil war, and then a wizard or three does it...
It's suprising we can remember our own names, really.

Grandville was broken into four islands now known as Cap Au Diable, Port Oakes, Bloody Bay, and Grandville.

You know what's sillier than an island being broken into four islands by a volcanic explosion?
1. Two of those 'islands' are in fact *not* two separate islands, but are together still as one island.
2. Two completely different islands somehow leapt into the open waters in between the now fragmented islands.

... It'd be kinda cool if they combined Cap and PO into one big zone in-game. Use the ferries to get from one side to the other quickly, or take a nice scenic trip over Mt. Diable.

If you go to the right places on Cap and PO, there are Paragon-style underpasses that are blocked so you can't go through them.... I suppose a remnant of Recluse's takeover.
It seems like that's on purpose. The whole place was kinda building up and then stagnated wherever Arachnos has direct control. It's only where there are strong 2nd parties, (Aeon, Sonata, Longbow and Wyvern, etc...) that things build back up.

a volcano splitting the island into 4 is silly. It would have been far bigger than Krakatoa. Assuming a natural volcano - which don't occur on the east coast.
[/ QUOTE ]
Your presuming that the explosion did the job. Its perfectly possible that collapse of a caldera or magma chamber did the job, or one heck of a landslide caused by the eruption. Besides, there is heavy implication that magic was involved in some way.
Of course, that doesn't change the fact that Sharkshead is between Bloody Bay and the rest of the former Grandville, and the other geographical inconsistencies.

Magic? Pah. One day, Blue Steel said there were about 12 islands in the Etoiles. Statesman pointed at a map and said, "Look, there's only like three."
Blue Steel was so annoyed, he went back in time (he is also Mender Silos) and smashed the Etoiles into about twelve islands. He then rearranged and renamed them all.

Someone was putting together a history of the Etiole Islands and stated it something like this: "A giant volcano explodes and splits Grandville into four islands. So powerful was the explosion that it hurled Bloody Bay OVER Sharkhead Island. Wait... How does that work?"

The Volcano's primary was Super Strength.
Between geology, magic, and politics, I'm pretty sure it's fairly plausible how the Rogue Isles became what they are.
I wish they'd flesh out the blank areas on the map though. Redside could use a new zone or two.

Sharkhead Island largely being composed of debris that's accumulated on a fitfully-slumbering sea monster, I'm prepared to accept that it swam into the empty space after Bloody Bay drifted far enough off.

Given that the Leviathan is supposed to bring about the end of the world and the world hasn't ended, I'd say it hasn't moved for a LONG time. Calystix the Shaper has been trying to wake it up not just for centuries, but for millennia, and he hasn't succeeded, most recently having his followers shot by the US navy for crimes of cannibalism and piracy, if I recall correctly. If the Leviathan swam where it is, it did so LONG before 1883.

Heck, then the volcano awakening didn't even wake up the space shark.
The space squid, er shark, won't wake up until the stars align right. Then it's DOOOOOOMMMM on a massive scale.

Hitting it with a boat will make it blink. Then you have to poke it in the eye to make it go back to sleep again.

Yeah but you get a badge and some merits for poking it in the eye.
Does it actually say anywhere that it's a space-shark? Callystix summoned it, and generally that means extra-dimensional....or maybe an aspect of Merulina?

I like the idea that a volcano exploding and dropping thousands of tons of rock on it was enough to make it roll over in its sleep.
Maybe it's just a big homage to Watchmen.
-SPOILERS-
The volcano story is just a cover-up. Someone with immense magical power didn't like the way that the Rogue Isles were being run. So he summoned a gigantic psychic monster in the heart of the Rogue Isles and off'd just about everyone, creating a mass outpouring of global aid that turned the Rogue Isles around.
The people that knew the truth realized that for the greater good of the world they would have to cover up the truth, so they created the rudiments of the PTS and summoned Bat'Zul under Mt. Diable to complete the story of a volcanic eruption causing the shambles of the Rogue Isles in 1883.
Of course many wouldn't believe such a story, especially those who survived the Psychic Holocaust, so other little 'hints' were spread throughout the Rogue Isles as time went on. Including the 'Eye of Horus' oil spill; a prolific magical symbol, But one with no other meaning than to distract from the truth of what happened on the Rogue Isles in 1883.
That is all.
