Wait, wait! VOLCANO? How did we miss this?
The... big, giant thermal tubes in Cap Au Diable didn't give you a hint in that direction? I mean. I'm just sayin'. I knew that at least 2 of the islands were volcanic, though I'm a bit intrigued (though not surprised) to hear that Grandville is as well.
Volcanos do tend to form chains, after all. Look at Hawaii.
Well, considering the pipes are part of the PTS (spoilers) I never really considered them volcanic/geothermal... There's "lava" under seemingly every cave in Paragon City but no surface volcanic activity.
My biggest surprise is that the eruption was big enough to split an island into 4 pieces, but yet there's no story about it, as far as I can tell.

"Designed by Dr. Aeon, the Power Transference System, or P.T.S., is a connection of pipes in Cap au Diable which pumps the geothermal energy from Mount Diable and turns it into useful energy for the citizens of that zone." - Paragonwiki
>_> Putting that link in your statement, and then saying you're surprised that they're potentially volcanic/geothermal is a bit of a silly thing to do, mang.
Though I get what you mean, considering all of the hulabaloo surrounding the PTS itself (including any and all spoilers), but the main thing is that they are actually utilizing geothermal energy. There's also a lot of things that could have lead to an island splitting - depending on the size of the island and the current shelf state, plus the nature of the first eruption, it could very well have done just that. It's been documented or theorized about before, after all (Like here).

Yep.
This is really doom.

I didn't have to. I've done all of the relevant arcs and TFs surrounding it, and I'd like to echo what one contact straight up tells you in the first place:
They're very sure that at least some parts of the PTS actually do use geothermal energy, but the amount of energy that the system itself is putting out is way more then it should be for that particular method of energy acquisition, and that there's got to be something deeper going on then is let on.
I just like avoiding spoilers.

a volcano splitting the island into 4 is silly. It would have been far bigger than Krakatoa. Assuming a natural volcano - which don't occur on the east coast.

I don't recall saying it wasn't silly, just possible. It totally depends on the stuff making the islands up (if it's a lot of weak, airy stuff then the force necessary to crack it into quarters [or some other fraction] is less), and how much creative freedom you're willing to put on the block to cover up the science of it.
Plausible, but highly unlikely.

See, I'm totally willing to accept that the event happened. I accept it just like I accept interdimensional travel, teleportation and cars that never need to stop for gas. It doesn't really matter to me whether it was a natural volcano or a pissed off demon.
The issue I'm trying to get at is that as far as I can tell not a single NPC ever mentions this. At it's best it would have been catastrophic, and at it's worst it would have been cataclysmic, and yet there are no written records to find, no oral histories to hear, and not a single one of the gods, spirits, demons and genies that were around when this happened care to tell us about it - which is exceptionally interesting if it WAS a demon, and not a natural volcano.
Fair enough - but it's kind of silly to think that there wasn't a volcano there. Gotta be something for the PTS hat trick to make sense, right? :3 Was my only real point for it.
To be fair, you don't need a volcano to get geothermal energy. The air conditioning in my home uses geothermal energy, and I live in Texas, very very far from any volcano or lava of any kind.

True, but the volcano helps a lot, especially if you're trying to produce it on a large scale.
I think the reason nobody talks about it is because it happened in 1833. <_<

Or maybe it's just part of that background lore that the devs just forgot about, or couldn't come up with any story for it....

That makes sense. Heck. It hasn't been 30 years since Mt. St Helens blew here in the real world. And even here in the Northwest, that is rarely ever a topic of discussion. Yet there are still obviously plenty of people alive who were around when that happened.

Was browsing the wiki and came across this:
http://www.cityofheroes.com/game_inf...olonial_p.html
"On April 3rd, 1833 an eruption shattered the nighttime calm. Over the course of the next few weeks, the previously un-volcanic main island of Grandville recoiled from ash, thunder, and fire as a mountain grew where none had been before. When it was all done, much of the old city was half-buried in ash. Lava flows had destroyed farmland and choked the harbor. Even more dramatic, Grandville was broken into four islands now known as Cap Au Diable, Port Oakes, Bloody Bay, and Grandville."
