Newb Q - What's with crafted selling for so much??
[ QUOTE ]
Is it me or I can I just buy recipes cheap, craft them and repost the crafted items, and make TONS of cash?! I'm used to playing the market on Eve Online where you NEVER see opportunities this obvious. Ususally if it looks to good to be true, you forgot to move a decimal. But I really think this looks to be the case here. Am I missing something or are consumers just really stupid in this game?
[/ QUOTE ]Yes they are really that stupid or they are just being lazy.

Bingo, you've just found one of the many secrets to wealth in this game. Only issue to be aware of is that profit margins are constantly changing due to various market forces (including competition) so it's rare that you can stick with crafting any one piece for a long period of time. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a niche, though.
"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
The crafting in this game is so simplistic and boring, I'm not surprised people are willing to pay others to do it. I was an explorer/crafter in my last MMO. In this one, those are about as appealing as a trip to the dentist's office.

lots of people in the game are so rich they just don't care.
and plenty of others are happy to pay someone a premium to assemble the IO for them so they can just buy it, slot it, and get right back to gaming.

Well I'm not talking about gathering and crafting though. I'm talking about buying a recipe, all the salvage, assembling and reselling for ENORMOUS profit. Like spending 100k and selling for 2M. It makes no sense to me, but if it works, why not do it I guess.
Now here's a question. Is it worth the money to get the crafter badge so I can summon a crafting table? I noticed that regular old non-set IO's generally sell for a loss, but that may just be the really low-level ones that people craft for the badge and then just dump on the market. Does this turn around at higher levels or will all my crafting towards a badge be at a loss?
Oh and lol at the guy who called it a "secret" of making money in this game.
My field crafters make a profit on thier way there, though most certainly not on every memorisation required.
The secret is to find a little niche that provides a steady income and keep using that at the same time as crafting those one where you just make cost back or the loss makers.
Pateintly bid in advance on both the recipes and salvage.

I think Squez has a guide to getting Field Crafter somewhere- if not, I'm sure he'll pop in eventually with some expert advice.
I've never gotten the table, but it seems like it'd be handy for anyone using 'craft to sell' as their main source of income.

This has been my only MMO so it's the only crafting I've seen. Can you explain a bit what made crafting in your last game more interesting?
Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.
Once you have any given memorization badge, it cuts the crafting cost of making that IO by about 40%, nearly in half, in addition you no longer need the recipe in order to craft it. Depending on the cost of the common salvage needed to craft a given IO, this usually means that for those common IO's that have consistent demand, a person with the badge can craft and sell them at a profit because the going rate for those in demand IO's (at least at higher levels) is significantly above production cost for those with the badge. I realize that doesn't directly answer your question but it's useful and IMO relevant information that you may want to factor into your decision of whether or not to work on getting the table.
Also note that each of the level 25 and 30 memorization badges (which are required for field crafter) expand your salvage storage space by two slots, so there is some benefit there. Further, the level 45 and 50 badges, while not required for field crafter, expand your recipe storage space by one each.
Hope you find this info useful.

Also, I've never heard of anyone going, "Crap, I need to make something in the middle of this mission!" But being able to craft Common IOs at a discount with no recipe required...well, that's cash right there, no matter how you twist it.
And as most everyone else has said--you're providing a service that they are willing to pay for. For them, it's easier to pay more (sometimes a LOT more) to just buy it and slot it...vs. finding the recipe, finding the salvage, finding a University, etc.
I figure there is only a small percentage of folks who are legitimately ignorant of the price of an item they are buying. Everybody else just doesn't care. So take one for the team, and make some dough.

The crafting table is just for convenience. You can memorize any common recipe with just a fraction of the work it takes to earn the crafting table. Memorization means you don't have to purchase the recipe and I believe crafting cost is cut by 50%.
As to whether it's worth it or not, I've seen several folks who have claimed they made tens or hundreds of millions by simply crafting memorized common IOs. It's always struck me as a bit iffy because it's common to have crafters or folks doing respecs dump common IOs on the market below cost.

Yeah this seems to sum it up nicely. I guess if I can make steady cash building and selling, getting the field crafter badge should be a non-issue.

As one of those people, I can say that it's true. A crafter dumps twenty of something- they only have twenty slots or so- but a hundred a day move through Wentworth's.
Not to mention that people with hundreds of millions look at a "last 5" of 300K and just throw down the money and grab one. I know because I raised my prices from 140K to 190K when people went crazy during the AE farming. Most of my actual sales were at 300-400K, meaning people didn't even TRY the 200K price point.
I guess the summary for the OP is "there's a ridiculous amount of inf in this game." It was 3 trillion before the IO system hit, with nothing to spend it on... now it's considerably more than that and people spend it by the 100 million.

heck, I've overpaid for crafted stuff before just because I didn't want to zone to our base to make it myself.

I have one toon that has the field crafter hero side, working on a villian (just got the 2nd crafting badge, now working on the 500 one).
if you get the check off sheet for the badges on the crafted io and what is needed to memorize. there are some that will sell and make up for those that even posting on the market for 5 inf is not worth your time. I dumped a lot just because they would not sell and none of my toons needed them.
Now if you are running a long mission and realized you didnt clear recipes and salvage, you can make some room with the table (may get called a show off if you pop it in a mission)
Lead Squirrel at Dr. E Spider robotic site #643
Nothing saids its your spot like an ourob. Portal dropped on the ground.
Point in case. A few day ago, I logged on and listed a level 50 recharge rate IO, for a typical sale price, there was an unfulfilled bid for 2 million.
Buying the recipe from the table, and placing buy it NAO pricing on that IO would put the cost at maybe 900 000 inf.
The last 5 sales were all at the level
The next few instant sales were still to me silly priced, but by the time I had worked through the 10 I crafted it was down to a over the going rate but not unreasonable 500 000inf.

I'm gladly one of the buyers of pre-crafted items. I despise haggling over kinetic weapons and carting my garbage to push a button to get me what I want. I'd rather fork over a sack of money and be done with it.

summon a crafting table?
[/ QUOTE ]
It might be, but like most things, it depends (imho). I will point out that you don't actually
*need* the summoned table for anything. You can craft (using base or university or lab),
and you can memorize recipes without it also. Here are some considerations that might
make it worthwhile to you however.
<ul type="square">[*] There are a lot of crafting badges, so getting those may be "worth it" to you, and the
table is one of them, and a logical culmination to several of the others as well.[*] Several of the badges increase the number of recipes and salvage your toon can hold[*] Memorizing certain recipes is a requirement for the table, but whether you get the table
or not, you save recipe and crafting costs for *any* recipes you do memorize (you can only
memorize common IO's btw)[*] You can often make a profit on many of the IO's you're crafting while memorizing, although
some are just throw-aways (which you can skip altogether if you don't want the table)[*] If you're part of an SG or VG, having all those IO's memorized is pretty cost effective
if you start making IO's for your other toons and SG members.[*] Not every market zone has a Lab or University, so it can be handy having the table
in that case.[/list]I have a single villain and a single hero that each have the table, and some of those uses
are convenient, but more often than not, I usually just end up using the base for crafting.
That said, the villain has made hundreds of millions just crafting memorized common IO's
whether the table was summoned to do it, or not...

Actually from his description, I'd guess he's NOT a stock broker. Playing the stock market is gambling, unless you're privvy to inside information. There are a lot of better ways to make guaranteed money.
I used similar techniques (market analysis using spreadsheets, databases and python scripts) to get rich in Eve Online and it was much more satisfying because the market was a lot harsher and much more well-balanced. Making money in CoX doesn't really take too much effort from what I've sen so far, thus it's far less satisfying.
It's like strutting around being proud of how much candy you took from all those babies. Nothing personal against anyone who has put forth the effort because I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort and was probably vastly satisfying. It's just not my cup of tea. I'll take enough to get what I want and be happy.
