CoX and the Future

So, City of Heroes/Villains has been getting better and better with each issue (for me anyways), and it seems our developers can push forward new and exciting content that we once thought they would never attempt.

With this turn of events (I.E. Going Rogue) I am beginning to ponder the next step(s).

First came Architect, a revolutionary system; the first of its kind. Originally I thought player created content was a dead-end that no one, especially not this MMORPG, would take a swing at. Well, the CoX developer team made one hell of a home run, and I am pleased with the system they have released.

Now, with possibly the most groundbreaking expansion looming on the horizon, this brings to mind one thing: What will they do next? Seriously, if they can add in side switching, an invention system, and a massively popular Story Creation system than what could possibly be the limit for this game now?

In short: The game has evolved beyond anything I originally thought it could be, and this has literally made me smirk with enjoyment. Now I am on the edge of my seat thinking if they'll do Power Customization or Power Coloring, or even a personal enemy function.

With devoted developers I feel as though the sky is the limit for CoX, and I'm happy to say it seems like smooth sailing from here.

But really, what do you expect/hope to see in th e coming future? Could it be several new power sets? Possibly even a new city entirely?? Or a mix of brand new travel powers?

I'd like to hear some opinions on that matter, especially since several of you have some rather interesting predictions!

I dont know. Once i15 comes out, I'm gonna be super satiated for a while. I've been dying for new costumes forever. I just hope the boot style for females that I want is in there. The old costumes were nice... but the boosters how just how GOOD they can be!

I'd like a way to design our own personal Nemesis.

Maybe have the game generate random missions so that everybody's experience with their on Nemesis would be unique...

Or the nemesis just randomly shows up in the streets while you're doing a mish to cause havoc. Real inconvenient like. Sounds like a true nemesis to me!! = )

Ho yeah; any Safeguard/Mayhem would have a chance of puling your Nemesis. Good idea.

So far I've been pleased with what the devs have done with the CoX franchise and think that the future will be good. I'm probably seeing more powersets, epic archtypes, zone overhauls in the future of this game.

I do what I can, and expect everyone else to build from there. I wasnt even thinking Mayhems or safeguards... but how nice would it be that if red side and you're robbing a bank, your nemesis shows up EVERYTIME to stop you!?

Of course if you side switched, you'd have to create a new nemesis... and your old one becomes obsolete.

Yeah but Ryzom.

lol. We mean "well designed with good people to make good missions"...

Myself I ... kinda wish we'd get a bit of a break on anything huge. I have barely even tapped things from 5 or 6 issues ago, let alone diving into any of the newest stuff. I'd like the dust to settle a bit and for some bug fixes to be front-burnered rather than any major new stuff.

Then again I seem to average about 2-3 issues behind everything - I only made my first dual blade scrapper like... 6 months ago, along with a plant troller...

well, as has been often mentioned, if they could finally find the way to drop the war walls, we'd have an integrated enviroment.
I'd like to see more content to bring us back onto the streets. Back in 2004, a large part of our blue-side effort was done on the streets. Now I see people darting past the street thugs to get to the next instance or building. It seems we move more an more toward an immobile state. Street fights and missions in the next zone over, then came radio missions and we focused on instances within the zone, now AE buildings where we just stand around a few paces apart from everyone else.

On a story side, I'd like to see the businesses of Paragon City fleshed out. Yeah, we have Crey and its story is pretty well developed, but what about all those other generic buildings throughout the whole city? Mostly we get generic hallways, generic pawn shops, etc. What are the other big businesses? What's their stories? Even a few known, like King Garment, are just sketchy. This could also provide opportunity for introducing new internal maps.

I think a big expansion possibility that someone else mentioned previously, was to build an expansion around Oranbega, the underground city. We've seen many pieces, but the indication seems to be that its huge. The drawback to this thought is that it would mean more Circle of Thorns, and most folks I've played with are sick of the Circle.

Of course, there are the ever popular Moonbase and Sea City (Atlantis).

Oh I would so love an Oranbega expansion. THAT I think would be way more fun for me, than moon or sea stuff. I love oranbega.

Expletively NO, oh no you le don't, DO NOT WANT, etc. A million times no.

Being one of the few games without voices is one thing that drew me. The second I heard voices in WoW I knew for sure (there wasn't too much doubt but) that WoW was not for me. No one in America seems to know what voice acting means, they think it's just putting on a funny stereotypical voice to fit their cartoon image of the character but it's not funny it's damned annoying and wouldn interfere with my music or NPR listening while I play and would make me grit my teeth out.

By the way, [u]NO[u]. It's bad enough to listen to the Hasten noise flash out every 20 seconds at the Market as it is.

One more NO for the road.

I think we'll have to wait for CoX 2: Electric Boogaloo for that.

If they have a personal Nemesis System. I REALLY HOPE we can have it starting at whatever level we like. So if we want it at level 1 or 2 we can have it then.

A few wishlist items that CoX could add, but probably never will:

Enemies with multiple damage areas - A large single enemy where you could destroy an arm or a leg, causing different effects, before actually defeating the enemy.

NPC base raids - Allow Super Groups to defend their bases from NPC attacks.

True ongoing storyline - Let our actions matter somewhere. Boomtown would be a perfect place for a zone that is ever changing. We know the tech exists since it's used in Recluse Victory.

Custom power animations - Like flight, but for powers. If an animation takes the same amount of time as a different animation, let us swap them. It might not work for everything, but with a bit of tweaking, this could be an easy way to allow more customization to our characters.

Player purchasable ad space - All that time and effort spent on selling ad space is being wasted. Let players purchase it to promote their MA arcs. Cheap, short run ads could be a fun and interesting way to dress up the landscape. If people don't like the idea, they can just turn off the ads like before.

Selectable music within MA missions - I doubt the music is hard coded to selected maps, so let us choose what music is playing when you enter a map.

These are just the ones I could come up with off the top of my head that you don't see over and over.

Why would you need a new nemesis? Can't handle a little competition? (if you go from good to bad) If you become a hero, who's to say your old nemesis won't show up on your missions to make you look bad, or even help you, depending on the how he / she feels about your "redemption"?

And, if you are a hero, I'd expect your Nemesis to still try and kill you.
I don't think the joker would give Batman a pass simply because they are on the same side now...

After side switching, that many people wanted and Power Customization that even more people wanted and might be on its way, a personal Nemesis would be the next very long term shiny mechanism for me.

I'd also more options for the MA (for example, the option to hand pick every single mob within one spawn so that my Bonnie and her Clyde would spawn together) and more integration of the MA into mainstream CoX (having the best arcs transferred as regular story arcs). But it is not a new shiny, is making an existing shiny even shiner...

Well, you can fake a personal Nemesis in MA, can't you? Just make a series of missions featuring Whomever, and having your SG run with you to fight the dastardly Poodleman in all his exploits.

Alternately, if you want to be surprised, have a good friend write your Nemesis (and maybe return the favor)

An expansion based on blue caves?

You really should have that looked at by your doctor.

(and I agree, blue caves would be bad. I would hope that any thought of an Oranbega expansion would include an overhaul to caves, and additional CoT goon types to add some zest back into what many consider a tired, annoying, overused group)

On the small side, a few new zones - like the aforementioned Atlantis, Moonbase, and Oranbega, but also a shopping mall and an amusement park. Or at the very least shopping mall and amusement park mission maps.

On the bigger side of my wishlist:

1) An interactive environment. I want to be able to ride on top of trucks or trains to get around; I want to be able to pick up and throw/swing mailboxes, parking meters, dumpsters, I-beams, foes, etc.; I want buildings and cars to be damaged or trees to catch fire when my energy or fire blasts miss their marks or Giant Monsters go on the rampage. All of the damage could disappear when the fight is over the same way mobs eventually respawn.

2) Branching story arcs. Everyone says they are tired of the same old content, so what if the current content was altered so that when you were given choices between two missions, your story arc changed based on which one you picked. "Defeat 10 Circle of Thorns in Kings Row" or "Break Up the Gang Fight in the Office Building." If you pick the CoT mission, then your contact send you on more CoT missions, whereas if you stop the gang fight then you get more Skulls missions. Also, maybe you take the gang fight mission and fail it, or chose not to complete it, which triggers a Hellions-Skulls gang war in KR.

3) Speaking of GMs and environmental damage, I'd like to see an introduction of greater incentive to fight GMs - higher rewards for one thing, but also penalties if they are ignored. Let's say Paladin spawns in KR - he should head for Wentworths or the Yellow Line, or even Blue Steel. He attacks these targets and begins to damage them. If he isn't defeated before he does X amount of damage, then the target is deactivated for Y amount of time - Wentworths or the Yellow Line station closes for 30-60 minutes for repairs, or Blue Steel goes offline for 5-10 minutes to recouperate.

That'd be interesting, but not everybody will be pleased as, in effect, it deprives the player of a ressource (Wensworth in KR) or forces them into taking time out of what they wanted to do and fight GM...

For me all I ask is this:

MOAR.

In general.

There are few things they could add that I would not enjoy in some capacity.

New zones? I'm there.

Old zones revamped? I'm there.

New costumes? There's a reason I hoard Halloween salvage ya know; and it's not because I have a burning need to dress up like Hamidon or States.

New powers? Always a plus.

New game systems? Barring a few very odd choices that I find highly unlikely - bring em on. Inventions went through better than I could have imagined; Architect is a blast...

Long story short - More COX = More fun for me.

(PS: Power customization and more weapon options would be a high one on my list though...)
