I think you've done a good job.

Just want to put in my observations about OwtS:
This power is not your typical "Oh, SH__!" power like Unstoppable or SoW. Its moderate +resist is not enough in itself to halt that impending DOOM moment. Better to use OwtS early, before jumping into a hot frying pan. OR If you find that the Sh__ has hit the fan, better to eat inspires to fix the problem and then use OwtS to ensure you stay stable. Activation/ rooted time of OwtS can be a killer but clicking multiple inspires allows you to do other things as well.

Nice read, makes me want to try one.

One thing I'd add, none of these builds seem to be built from the ground up...that is they don't go in the order that seems usable when leveling. First travel power at 30? Err...I don't think I could handle that. You might put in a leveling build too...

First travel power at 30? Par for the course if not staving it off even longer.
There's enough temp travel powers to keep me from picking one.

Slotting Recommendation: 1x Cytoskeleton Exposure ( this buffs all your mag resists including defense debuff resist, plus it has zero recharge).

[/ QUOTE ]
Looked up Cytoskeleton Exposure and it's to-hit buff defense buff end reduce.. Never used it before but how does it improve all the stuff mentioned?

Yeah, Raptor Pack plus the GvE flight booster is more than enough unless you're heading to the hind end of Nerva. In which case it's time to autofly and go get a drink. :P

You want Membranes in Active Defense not Cytos. Otherwise, for every place you have a Cyto, an Enzyme will do the same but better.

As for the percent chance for +Recharge from the FF proc, from 1 target to 10 targets, the probabilities for +Recharge should be 10%, 19%, 27%, 34%, 41%, 47%, 52%, 57%, 61%, and max 65%.

Awww now i have to try one :P Just one thing tho, is that "yawn" power you refer to in the LT's attack chain, is that a PPP ? ^_^

Beware what lurks in the Shadows

nice guide, incidentally i was playing around on mids and made a bad [censored] costume in game saved it and then rerolled to elec/sd and once i hit lvl 4ish i checked o nthe forums and poof there was a pretty detailed and accurate guide, and thus Captian Overcharge was born.

I'd reroll just because of the mispelling. I feel badly for high level characters with mispelled names: Candian Sheld, Black Rouge, Mistic Angle, all of which I've seen in game at one point or another.

I'm confused again, I thought procs only had a chance to go off once?

THey do only have 1 chance to go off. On each target you hit with the power.

Thanks for all the feedback. I was farming a bunch this weekend and didn't have much time on the forums. I'll Update some of the guide today to reflect the following stuff:

1. Travel Power level 30
2. Cytoskeleton vs Membrane
3. FF+ Rech (more detail)
4. Farming

Very nice guide ThugsRus.

I respec'ed my elec/shield following your advice and it payed off handsomely. I now have 47% to melee/range and about 44.5% to AoE. I don't have the best of enhancements (one set of obliterations, mostly the cheaper multistrikes), but adding tough/weave definitely upped my survivability.

A few other things I did based on your guide. I got rid of Charged Brawl, Jacob's Ladder and Electric Fences and spec'ed in boxing and Mu Lightning in their place. While Jacob's Ladder does decent damage, I couldn't stand the pause that occurred before it fired. It felt like a weak melee snipe. I like Mu Lightning as a cheap filler attack far more than charged brawl. I thought I'd miss charged brawl but the single target attack chain is surprisingly fluid.

One thing though is that by spec'ing in tough/weave and having faster animating attacks your endurance bar definitely takes a hit. I think having lots of +recovery bonuses in your build has become much more of a must have instead of a nice to have. I don't like carrying stacks of blues.

I'm saving up for a Miracle proc and a Performance Shifter and then I think the build will be largely complete sans any purples I want to go for.

Overall, I'm pleased with the build and the advice from the guide. I also like the fact that I was able to do the build for relatively cheap - around 80M with a couple of lucky drops.

Approx stats for a 80M build: 47% def melee/range, 44.5% def AoE, a little over 2000 hps with no accolades, 32% smashing/lethal resists, 13% fire/cold/energy/neg energy resists, 12.5% recharge.

The only expensive pieces in the set:

Universal Travel -kb (x2)
Steadfast Res/Def
Steadfast Res/End
Mako's Quad and Mako's Dmg/Rech
Touch of Death Triples
Obliteration set
Performance Shifter +end

Everything else is dirt cheap. The Steadfast pieces I got off bronze rolls, so they cost me nothing but the cost of salvage and crafting them. What cost me the most were the Perf Shifter, Universal Travels and the Obliteration pieces. However, I didn't spend more than 5 million on any one piece (honest!)

Most of the cost was spent on crafting the pieces. A lot of recipes are still undervalued and you can get them cheap with your tickets going towards any of the expensive salvage that you need.

80M is a rough estimate, but I don't think it's that far off the mark. Probably a third of that went for the Obliteration set.

The build does look different now with LoTG pieces, a Numina unique, a set of Posi's and another full set of Obliteration. But the build as posted is pretty functional. I found that the +end with perf shifter offset much of the end issues I was having without it...it should be part of any base build.

Does anyone else find this build a slow starter? I've got a DM/Shield scrapper who's a lot of fun, so I thought I'd give a /Shield brute a try. At level 20 I still feel extremely fragile. Damage output with Fury isn't bad, but I usually end up taking so much damage I can't keep going if I run out of inspirations.

I've played defense-based scrappers (2 Shield and 2 SR), so I know the early levels can be rough, but this brute is definitely one of the more frustrating chars I've played. I'm holding out until level 25 (SO's and a couple more powers) before judging him too harshly, but I haven't felt this frustrated with a new char in a long time.

Admittedly, part of the problem is probably that the first Brute I played is a SS/WP, which basically plays like God mode.

Well I'm glad it's not just me. I mentioned very early in this thread that I didn't see these builds as being usable while leveling. They seemed more like builds made to be respeced into. I'd like to see a leveling build too, but I'm in no rush. My WM/WP brute is super fun right now.

Shields in general is rough going before adding Tough/Weave and IOs into the mix. It doesn't help that the oft-faced enemies redside have nasty tricks up their sleeves (50 levels of Longbow gets old after a while).

IOs and set bonuses. For example, 6 slotting Red Fortune provides +2.5% ranged defense. 6 slotting Obliteration provides 3ish% melee defense. Stack enough of these and they add up to the base values you get from just using SOs.

What sets are you using to get all that ranged/aoe defense? I plan on using oblits in all my pbaoe attacks so that takes care of my melee....
