The new ranged attacks
You can keep repeating it, but it doesn't make it true.
MA has been a fantastic success, and one that's provided a shot in the arm to a game that's going to face some stiff competition.

Ah yes, a shot in the arm, from the spoon of genius and candle of ingenuity....
... Wait, MA isn't Heroin in the original metaphor, is it?

Yep.. Such a fantastic success that several veteran players I know have registered for the CO beta in the last week or so.

It's a joke now and not worth the time as far as I'm concerned. Besides the vast majority of 4-5 star content that I've tried should not have been rated more than 1-2 stars.
Poorly written, boring content that makes no sense should not get 4-5 stars.
What I'm afraid of is the voting cartels artificially inflating the ratings of their missions for badges makes the search for actually real 4-5 star content too time consuming and not worth it.
I14 should now be called Mission Waste of Time.

The MA had only one real purpose and that was to bring people back to farm toons fast. Since thats not the case now all we are left with is crappy stories and bad design.
No matter how much sugar you sprinkle on a turd its still a turd.
Just face the facts, the devs have killed MA in the attempt to Kill the farmers. Plain and simple. You can no longer do what they set out to let you do. Player created arcs. Yes they are player created assisted by the devs....

Out of over a hundred thousand players, it's pretty much a given that several thousand like the MA, and several thousand don't.
However you slice it, it's more content than any other game has, period. Having trouble finding well written arcs? Check out the various review threads on this here forum.
Story Arcs I created:
Every Rose: (#17702) Villainous vs Legacy Chain. Forget Arachnos, join the CoT!
Cosplay Madness!: (#3643) Neutral vs Custom Foes. Heroes at a pop culture convention!
Kiss Hello Goodbye: (#156389) Heroic vs Custom Foes. Film Noir/Hardboiled detective adventure!

Grats on the invite. Still havent gotten mine. pewp.
One of my close friends approached me yesterday. He's been around since beta. He went into detail of past issues where things were changed , some issues very drastically. He described alot of the past nerfs as "not really affecting his characters" and that they were "minor tweaks and adjustments". He said this was the first time he actually felt a nerf before. And it wasnt his characters, it was his critters... the mobs he could normally deal with, <on his melee characters> now had ranged attacks and overpower him every time.
These were carefully written and crafted storylines and character concepts- read; WERE.....
He described the "nerf" as a "sledgehammer to the face" he also doesn't read the forums... so he doesnt read any guides on how to build range defenses... I have been trying to get him to post but hes stubborn like that. He builds his characters how he wants to and often refuses outside advice.
before all of this he loved MA. Loved making stories. even while the Exploitive farming was going on he was all about his arcs and nothing else. so... take that for what its worth...
Ignoring anyone is a mistake. You might miss something viral to your cause.
Uh. How did he deal with ranged characters before?
it took him two years to get his first lvl 50

Well, some of the new ranged melee attacks are pretty potent, much more so than normal mobs tend to be.

Yeah, go figure. Content they are going to sell us, as the second expansion the game has ever had, may eclipse the 13th free content improvement they've released.

huh? 13th? don't you mean 14th and 15th.
Point is they haven't even fully announced what's in 15 or when the expansion might actually come out and what's in it.
Don't think it's a good sign about 14 if folks are more excited now about it then issue 14.

Considering most "adjustments" in every MMO seem to be done with a barrage of sledgehammers when the fine tuning of a single screwdriver would actually make sense, is anyone surprised by any of this?
[/ QUOTE ]
1. Fixed that for you.
2. Not really. Seen this for many years across many MMOs.
I've been around (off and on) since the beginning, and I hadn't realized Issue 1 came after the start. Der.
Ok, amend what I said, please!

Let's Dance!
I kinda enjoy the challenge. They are "bosses" after all. Imagine you fight a team of lvl 54 Longbow Wardens or Gun Slingers. I believe they'll be even more nasty to fight.
So why should Customized Bosses be inferior?
I was laughing a bit when the Brute on my team got killed consistently when he jumped in. It was a big group of lvl 54 bosses afterall. Technically, you are "supposed" to die without proper support/planning.
I enjoy the current challenge. If my team does well, we still get great exp! Not as good as Ritki Farm for sure but it is a very acceptable rate.
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
The damage scale of custom critters makes them tougher "without" an over the top ranged attack added in addition to more powers on standard.
The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.
What's funny is that they made some NICE changes to limit defenses.
For example, for a long time I was avoiding giving any minions (and most lt.s) Willpower or Super Reflexes, because both got a +per power even at standard. Which sucks for stealthers -- if I want an anti-stealth character, I want the freedom to design them that way.
Well, now, standard version of WP, at least, doesn't have the +per power. Yay!

It's not that we want custom bosses to be "inferior." We want them to be on par with existing units.
ALL custom bosses now get tier 9 powers. They do tremendously high damage. On the lowest difficulty, level 50 bosses can do 950+ damage every 20 seconds with 11 second status effects.
Take a second to think that over. All level 50 bosses can do 95% of a squishy's HP every 20 second and keep them statused more than half the time, with one power, not counting the 3+ other attacks they get, at minimum. Make them level 51-53 and they'll kill a squishy in one or two hits. And many of those tier 9 powers that they get by default have bonus accuracy.
That's just on the lowest difficulty, too. Upping the diff adds things like Build Up and AoEs. Sets like Broadsword end up with the two strongest attacks on Standard and are absolutely devastating.
We don't want them to be easier than normal bosses. We want them to be equal with normal bosses. Normal bosses can be hard, but try fighting custom ones with something other than a Brute. They will one or two shot your squishies every time. Most normal bosses don't do that.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

[/ QUOTE ]Technically, nitpickily, not entirely correct.
Issue 6 (which technically included the CoV content) dropped on Thursday, October 27, 2005.
City of Villains was dropped on Monday, October 31, 2005.
Only those who had CoV preorder were allowed to utilize villainside content before the 31st. But the dates are so close together that many people forget that. (Same with Release and Issue 1 being confused.)

sounds like people are honestly surprised that it was released in a pre-beta state... Just imagine if we had gotten it in i13 lmfao.
Let's be honest; MA was a really great idea, but has been a travesty through implementation.
A mediocre idea executed well >>>>> a great idea executed poorly.
The way things are going MA will be a success with company like the arena, zone pvp, and the shadow shard.
Terms like revolutionary and paradigm shift are better replaced with: waste of developer time.
Great idea, wrong team doing the implementation. Not an attack on the dev's, just reality. Now the majority of dev time is spent trying to fix MA rather than the rest of the game. Be honest, they struggled to keep up with vanilla pve and now they have this money pit to focus on.
