This thread was created before war mace was buffed and was widely regarded as one of the lowest damage primaries. Energy Armor has been a joke since it was put in the game. It's 'niche' of being one of two defense sets (and the other, stone armor, is taken mostly for its massive resists in granite) has been stolen by super reflexes and shield defense.

It's a really ****** combo. You can make it work because you can make anything work in CoX... but it's a really ****** combo. Not energy melee/energy armor ******, but close. For advice: Load for as much typed defense as you can with IOs, grab the global defense boosting powers and IOs like the steadfast, combat jumping, weave (I also have manoevers and hover ... might as well take advantage of Energy Drain and save a bundle on kinetic combats). I paired my /ea with dark in the hopes that dark could fix the suck like it does with ever other set except stone armor. It does, but when defense begins to fail... and it does in large spawns pretty much instantly thanks to a very low defense debuff resistance.... nothing in Paragon can save her from faceplanting.

And enjoy being invisible all the time, as it's a huge part of your defense score and even survivability. It doesn't matter what you make for a costume.... like a stalker you'll only see it when you're standing around looking cool.

you sir, are a traitorous lech. you are being watched now, if you ever speak against the STRONG and PRETTY again......... there WILL be reprisals!

Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

screw your joke, i want "FREEM"

Maybe there will be, but if the reprisals come in the form of a wm/ea brute.. I think I'll be ok.

Seriously is this a good set up ?? Im looking for something new..

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

EA is still rather lackluster but WM since the buff has become a beast.

So the thing is that yes, energy armor isn't what most would consider top tier, however as with most sets that have gaping holes, combine with something with a lot of mitigation and you can make it work. EA + WM works because mace has lots of mitigation and ea brings what it brings.

I am the proud owner of a brute named Pretty and Strong and he's a boat load of fun.

This. x11ty billion. Love my WM/SD. Gave me a whole new outlook on CoX when I re-subbed.

As far as /EA is concerned, I had one back in the day. DM/EA. After 35 levels I got tired of being completely outclassed and rerolled something else.

I've toyed with the idea of going Pretty again, just for kicks - but my STRONG will stay with my Shield, thanks much.

Arrr! Indeed! I've moved on to Strong and Sparky but I still respect the pretty .

Brutes have always known that incarnates were shams anyways, we've had the strongest and prettiest incarnates known to Primal, Praetoria, and everywhere in between all this time.

why is energy aura bad?

Its not so much that its bad, just that there are 8 other secondary sets that are better.

I run a Fire melee/Energy Aura, which I rolled looking for the weakest set possible to run.

I was surprized when at the end of the day I got a toon that:
  • Keeps its softcap down to level 20,
  • is Even deeper softcapped at 50,
  • has no energy issues whatsoever,
  • has a 1000 Point Plus Self heal when surrounded by foes.
  • has a practially crashless BEST T9 in the game.
  • effortlessly farms Malta, Carnies, Rogue Mu, Longbow, Ascended PPD
  • has 25% ranged defense to fill the Psi/toxic hole. (Popping lucks or a team fills it to cap).

The forums will tell you that Energy Aura is the bottom performer.
I won't argue against that, but I can tell you that EA performs very well and you can do all the content in the game with it no problem, and when IO'd its performance impresses.

When something good happens to me, I can never enjoy it....
I am always too busy looking for the inevitable punchline...

Energy Aura when using SO's is definitely subpar. It's only when you start throwing IO sets at it that it starts to perform very well. I have a WM/EA from back when this thread was first created and before both sets received a little bit of a boost. I never had any issue with the toon back then, but it just wasn't as good as my other brutes. Once I IO'ed him out he became one of my favorite characters to play and also one of the toughest.

Oh and it is good to see this thread around still! Keep it going.

This has been my experience, and I'll note I had my SS/EA long before EA got any sort of Dev loving. It was enjoyable all the way to 50 on SOs.

My SS/EA now with a fairly cheap IO build (no purples) easily outdoes my other half SS/WP. I team with people often who balk at the idea of a /EA brute and usually end up stunned at how awesome it is convinced I must have some crazy purpled build.

But its not a min/max set, so the forums will continue to poo poo it. Though how anyone could think DA is better then EA I will never understand. DA is just downright PAINFUL to play until you can get it IO'd.

Since the game is built to allow emp/rad defenders to solo missions if they want to NO ARMOR SET is unplayable.

The thing with energy armor is that there are two other sets that do what it does better. Even on SO's shield defense gives you better damage, similar defense values, more resistance, and bonus health. Even on SO's Super Reflexes gives you faster recharge and more defense debuff resistance.

As an aside I am interested in seeing Test Rat's 'keep its softcap down to level 20' build, though.

Tad bit of exageration, its 25 exemplar really.
I should have said 20s.

I would still like to see it. I wasn't able to softcap until the mid 30s without damaging the build severely.

I'd put up a funny comic if I was as talented an artist as Mr Playschool.

Oh, really? So SD and SR have fast recharging heals AND fast recharging end powers?

Oh, wait, no they don't have either of those. Energy armor has BOTH of those features, in the same power!

How many SR or SD builds cram in Aid Self as a sop to their utter lack of healing abilities?

Energy is DIFFERENT. That by no means makes it WORSE.

Even on SO's Energy gives you an infinite well of endurance and a flowing tap of hit points as required. Those things are not without merit.

Well, I'm not Test Rat, and I have no idea how this exemp's, but here's a build I todded together recently. I was inspired by the uber-elude thread in the scrapper forums, and was shooting for Apex softcap. With Dark Obliteration in the mix, I got pretty close.
